NA talks about leaving three players up last night, when defnding corners, to counteract Torquay putting big players in our box. I wasn't at the game, is this what happenend?

If so I am delighted, it has been v frustrating over the years when we have pulled everyone back to defend corners, giving us no outlets and allowing the opposition to crowd our box.

The other thing that annoys me is when we don`t have anyone at the far side of the box when we have corners. We generally have a big bundle of players in the goal mouth but no-one spare on the far side for a ball hit too hard that sails over everyones head.

My son and I comment about both these things every week. How many corners are over hit?! I think with the man up debate for corners, transition is the new buzz word, so having quick players that break away from the penalty area when corners break down is the current trend, and Saints were using Chamberlain as the out ball for that last season. I assume last night that NA was using the ploy of three up top to allow more space in the area for Bart to collect. I am away so did not get to the game, be interested to hear if Bart did collect more corners last night

Of course it works both ways. If their defence is slow you want to draw them into the box and then break quickly.

Ah, but that only works if our players are quicker than theirs.

I hate to see everybody pulled back to defend a corner. I think it's better to create a space in the goal area so that the keeper can come and claim the ball. Of course, that only works if you trust your keeper to do so. Is it just a coincidence that Bart was playing last night?

Funnily enough I recently read an article (can't remember where) which stated the opposite. It said that it was better for the defending team for there to be as many players in the box as possible, as it reduced the space for attackers to run into. It said that teams have a better chance of scoring from a corner if they hold a few players back.

Not saying I agree, just that I found it interesting as that seems to have been the approach we've taken over the last season or so.

I saw Forest two seasons ago leave 5 up. They had Morgan and some other brute at the back winning everything and they were chasing the game so it made total sense. The opposition didn't know what to do so had loads back.

It's always a bit of a psyche-out if you leave a few players upfield, depends entirely on the match situation and score whether it's a good idea or not though.

I've noticed whenever De Ridder plays, as the short fast bloke he gets left on half way on his own much of the time, he was up on his own on Saturday after coming on.

Actually, I have written to NA pointing that out .. although I'm sure he knew about it already, but no-one has learned to do it yet.
