ericofarabia Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 Torquay played us off the park allegedly.:uhoh: I want some of those happy pills those guys must have had. I loved them .... better than listening to Solents efforts tonight. Loved their enthusiasm and were very generous in praising anything we did well. Hats off to them for trying. No dirty Leeds tactics and getting a bit of a boner that they had 348 away fans, which to be fair is probably the^same % as us taking 3000 away. dubai_phil Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 Just think it should be mentioned again. poopey's first (oops Only) team managed to lose at home to Barnet tonight. 8 bookings in 2 games now is it?
Shroppie Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 Makes a huge statement when we can make 8 changes and still put out an impressive team. Got the feeling that the team spirit is as good as I've ever seen with Saints and there's acceptance that there are about 20 first team regulars who will rotate. RobM Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 348 fans from Torquay to Southampton on a Tuesday night, with threats of rioting, for a Carling Cup game is pretty good going! Good result tonight, even better considering the team that lined up tonight weren't a regular line up. Lots of players who don't usually play together so no cohesion or 'team', but still a good result.

I get the feeling that we no longer rely on a single player in any position (except RL maybe) and there's huge flexibility. Perhaps I'm wrong or not explaining my point well, but there were more than a few moments when two players were going for the same ball. Just signs you'd see when players don't play alongside each other much. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the performance or team spirit, quite the opposite in fact as I think our ability to put any players alongside each other, play well and win convincingly is remarkable. It's amazing to see this many players of this quality, all of whom can add something to the team. Makes a change from half a dozen good players and a bunch of journeymen

petermcpete Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 I know it was against Torquay but De Ridder looked very good tonight, quick feet, very nippy, great finish for the goal and his final ball in the box was class. Can't seeing us missing AOC too much if he carries on as so! Looked much better on the wing than he did up front vs Leeds.

The Cat Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 Fairly easy win. We went into cruise control mode for the first half of the second half until Bart pulled of what Nigel would call a "worldy". This seemed to shake us up enough to quickly put the game out of their reach. Schneiderlin was class. De Ridder's goal was real quality. Guly gave his normal peaks and troughs performance topped off by a pretty poor miss at the end of a great passing move just before he got subbed. But I love him all the same. The defence was stretched at times but then I doubt those 4 have ever been on the pitch together at the same time before. Seaborne in particular looked rusty and got turned a few times. Saints ale is horrible.
Saint Matty 76 Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 Easy win, when Lallana came on he just dominated, Bialkowski made one incredible save and looked decent apart from one moment at the end, De Ridder looked brilliant and took his goal really well. Lambert's free-kick was also brilliant, the ref getting hit in the face and falling over was also a highlight.
L1Minus10 Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 Chaplow was our best player by a mile. For me, some showed why they are not in the League team. Seaborne was bloody terrible all game and Butterfield seemed a bit casual at times. Morgan started well then faded and Holmes just hasn't got it. The difference that Hammond and Lallana made was quite noticeable. Guly didn't look like he wanted to be out there and Forte should have replaced him at half time. I like de Ridder's attitude and he's a crowd pleaser. Final ball went awry a few times but took his goal well and has a touch of the Lallana's about his footwork. Will get better and better I think. CWD Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 Pleased I went tonight. Rubbish crowd and rubbish atmosphere but an enjoyable game. Stand out performers were Chaplow and Lambert, whilst De Ridder looks like he could be awesome once he settles in a bit more. However, Dickson and Guly were shocking and Seaborne, despite winning his fair share of headers, just doesn't look commanding enough to ever be first choice. A good win, and it always felt like we had another gear we could have moved up into. Hammond was quality when he came on.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 Joint MOTM = De Ridder (pace/tricks/goal) & Chaplow (box2box motor/drive/goal). Rest of the team were OK - Holmes delivered some excellent crosses at times. Guly - good player usually, but tonight he was absolute gash with poor 1st touch and missed a sitter. Seaborne - Never anything other than a L1/L2 defender and will lose us games if we have to play him. Martin - Not bad considering he had to cover for Seaborne's errors, but he's still a long way off being 1st choice material yet. WE URGENTLY NEED A TOP CB PLEASE NICOLA!!! Saint J 77 Posted 10 August, 2011 Share Posted 10 August, 2011 Do we need a new one every time we concede a goal then? Yes of course, everytime we concede a bad goal I would like to see the chamberlain money invested in a brand new centre back, each and every time. doddisalegend Posted 10 August, 2011 Share Posted 10 August, 2011 Interesting about De Ridder lots of people saying he was class. Solent reckoned Nigel wasn't to happy with him, good going forward but not tracking back to help out in defense. Nigel mentioned as much in his post match interview. All in all the score says comfortable win though solent weren't making it sound like that last night. I think the main thing last night showed is what our A team and B team look like. Saint_Ash Posted 10 August, 2011 Share Posted 10 August, 2011 Is it just me or is Rene Howe one of the fattest players to grace the hallowed turf of St. Marys? Was he the number 9? Well funny, he looked well fat, still got passed Seaborne every time though! Their 23 up front looked lively and did all the running for them. De Ridder looked good tonight, he tried hard at getting forward and he's very quick, maybe even Jonno Quick. Thought he disappeared a few times though. Chappers never stopped running and looked very good, as did Lambo, glad they both scored. Someone posted about Seaborne being the whipping boy with a sad face, unfortunately when you play absolutely awful like he did you will be criticised, we need a new CB in asap and have Martin as the 3rd choice. Another poor performance was Guly, he played in his preferred role of just off the striker but was languid and disinterested I thought, seemed to be lazily drifting offside a fair few times aswell. Overall it wasn't a brilliant performance until Hammond and Lallana came on and the midfield rarely lost possession then, went up a few gears and looked excellent. It'll be interesting to see the starting 11 on Saturday, wouldn't be surprised to see Guly dropped and De Ridder down the right, if no new CB I expect that to be the only change. FalkirkSaint Posted 10 August, 2011 Share Posted 10 August, 2011 Bart - made a couple of decent saves but he dropped the ball twice. Butterfield - diabolical. Their goal came from his mistake Seaborne - get rid off him soon. He's not Championship class Martin - shaky but picked up Seaborne's mistakes. Great prospect. Dickson - did nothing bad, did nothing good. De Ridder - Fantastic goal and crosses. Looks a shrewd signing Schneiderlin - Brilliant passing. CM is really our strongest position atm Chaplow - Had a good game and really improved when Hammond came on Holmes - Decent. Good understudy for Adam Lambert - Needed minutes and got them. Good free kick, decent game Guly - so frustrating Hammond - ran the show Lallana - non-existent Forte - so glad he got his goal and is off the mark.
