Roger Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 On saturday there was only 2 le tiss songs when he was in the gantry. It struck me that in the old days we would have sung his name a lot more than that. Best player ive seen at saints by miles and so loyal. In the prem cult heroes he was 4th on all time list behind bergkamp, shearer at toon and cantona. Ahead of henry, zola, ginola etc. Man utd fans still sing lots of cantona songs and we dont sing le tiss songs too much, he did it over longer period than cantona. If you compare le tiss and cantona 93-97 le tiss was ahead on goals and assists.

Dr Who? Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 Le Tiss will always be a legend in Southampton, loyal, and the best player by far that I have ever seen in a Saints shirt, no one has ever come near and I doubt they ever will. LEGEND!!
saintalton Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 Yes I think so, his anti-cortese rants made him look like a bit of a spolit brat at times. Complaining that he had to buy tickets etc. Yes I agree he was an amazing special player maybe the best player ever in a saints shirt. But that doesn't make him any more special than say Mick channon, who I'm sure if he wanted to come to a game would have to buy a ticket, rather than be an ex-free loading player. Those days of free bars for ex players are long gone, thank goodness, as we've been in dire financial position before an we done need ex freeloaders feeding of us. He was a great servant who earnt good money but that doesn't mean we have to carry on paying for him now he is retired.

Wash your mouth out with soap sir, greatest player we will ever have and gave more to this club than anyone except maybe Ted. Your view is not the view of the vast majority. jam Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 I think partly it's just time. We've moved on more. Still love him, and don't judge him whatsoever for getting off his arse and trying to save the club when so many others did nothing. Can't believe anyone criticised it when he was just desperate to help. But beyond that, the cortese stuff is boring. Also, although normally a good pundit, I've found some of his comments on Saints just plain wrong. Subjective maybe, but I've disagreed with him. Even Saturday he suggested we'd be happy with mid-table. Some might, but adkins, cortese and many more wouldn't. I just don't think he has enough confidence in our current team, but that might stem from a dislike of the ownership and overall setup. He hasn't bought into it like many of us. The other thing was comparing Lallana to Surman, which IMO is ridiculous. Surman was a tidy midfielder and decent enough, but not really likely to be top flight material, not one to control a game, build a team around. Lallana has ten times the skills, vision, passing, technique and finishing. I think he'd be able to see that, being a similar (albeit far better) player himself. Lallana is the closest to MLT we're likely to get in style and technique. Yes, miles behind him, but that still makes him a damn good player. Interesting. I'd suggest Lambert fits that bill far more than Adam.
Cascadia Saint Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 Le Tissier will be a legend for as long as this football club exists. His popularity didn't really take a hit after the Pinnacle debacle, as we were rescued straight afterwards by Markus and co. At the worst he came off as naive or misinformed, but as a former player I don't think anyone can or will ever touch him. Le God.
Hedgehog Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 What a stupid comment. If it wasn't for Matty how many people like me would still be following the Saints. The best player ever to wear a Saints shirt in my opinion. Regardless of his recent comments about the club etc. Just watch the DVD Unbelievable and show me any one in the last 20 years did as much for this clubs stature and existence as him. Just look at the likes of AOC who at the age he is, has given but a pinch of salt to this great club!!

Popularity..by it's very meaning suggests something that is current and (sadly) it's almost 10 years since MLT last put on a Saints shirt. There is a whole generation that have never seen Matt play for Saints - except maybe on DVD / Video - and only know him as a TV soccer pundit. For my generation . we were equally inspired by the likes of Paine, Sydenham, Ron Davies and Mick Channon...most of whom are already pensioners. but are nevertheless heroes of the first level. MLTs "popularity / fame / success " will be forever sealed in the memories of those who saw him play. I might suggest that most of those who sing at matches maybe the younger generation who have seen seen the heroes of past in their prime. It's good to have a variety of songs - in my days it was a continous chorus of WTSGMI... and I still love it today.
Big_Bald_Si Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 Was he actually in the gantry, or was he summarising in the comfort of the studio? If he was in the studio, not many of us will have known about it, and it's in the quiet corner of the stadium.

Brussels Saint Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 I love the way he says "we" whenever discussing Southampton, despite supposedly being there to comment on the football in general. Hardly any of the other clubs former player commentators do this, referring to each team by their name instead. Shows how much he still considers himself to be one of us.
