Undisclosed Fees

In light of AOC going to play for Arsenals U18 side for an undisclosed fee. Is it about time the undisclosed fee was abolished? In an age where transparency in football is ripe (FIFA etc) there does seem to be an awful lot of undisclosed's creeping in.

Thoughts?

Because it's no-ones business other than buying and selling clubs quite frankly.

I disagree, you only have to look at that lot down the road and all their dodgy dealings to realise it affects alot more than just the buyer and seller

Because when Saints start buying new players it helps in the negotiation process if the other club doesn't know if Saints got £15m or £50m for Chamberlain.

Spot on. Although the reports in the media and the PA aren't going to help negotiations!

but then they get a rough idea from the reported fee. Also, other clubs dont know how much we had initially

Not obvious to me that it being undisclosed helps us in transfer negotiations.

That would only be the case if the undisclosed fee is higher than the fee reported in the media.

E.g. if we got £20m for him, but most people believe it's about £15m.

However, we are better to disclsoe the fee if reports are higher than the actual amount.

Reported fees vary. Some reports have said £5m upfront with upto £5m later, other £7m upfront with upto £5m later and probably the most reliable from the BBC, PA and Independant said £12m upfront with upto £3m later. Having it undisclosed still leaves an element of doubt and strengthens Cortese's bargaining position in the future.

They might not know the actual price but I'm sure they wouldn't need too long to get in the right ball park. Prices were always disclosed in my day so why not now? I'm all for having an ace in the hole but I really do not see what major advantage not disclosing the price is.

I see that point but again, a club(s) wouldnt know what we had to start with, yes they know we had a bob or 10 with the reported offers for Sharp et al

I agree with you. Years ago the fee was always quoted, never heard this undisclosed business.

But the club trumpeting "Saints' previous transfer records blown out of the water" somewhat undermines that position if anyone happens to know our previous club record...

Not really.

Makes commercial sense not to announce to the world at large the price you do business at. But football is populated by mongs so it's little wonder silly practice is rife.

Yeah, really. It's not like the club has been reluctant to fail to disclose otherwise widely known information previously either. But you're right about silly practice.

They want to reassure Saints fans that they got a good deal without giving the exact fee away. Leaving it undisclosed could potentially mean it is more than £15m, but no-one would know.

you have to be autistic not to see why many clubs do the undisclosed thing...as for being an embarrassment....well

My son is autistic Delldays. Ignorant f*kwits like you make me despair. same sort of c*nt that used to use 'flid' for anyone disabled . I Know you are a thick ***t but cant be arsed to read your posts. If the mods took action I'd expect you'd be on Itchen bridge quite soon as 20000 + indicates you have very little else in your life.

Quite right !

It's no-one's business except those who are directly involved with the deal. It may be " nice to know " what we paid /or got for " a player when they sign but it does help bargaining if the other club doesn't know whats in your bank account. I assume that Cortese will fend off such ridiculous deals with a stern comment about our £13 million deficit over the last 2 seasons, and not having " money to burn ".

Personally, I'm past the stage of calculating things on the strength of " the transfer fee ". The real costs of signing a player, for say £750K and paying them 10K week and little different to signing a " free transfer " player and then paying " a signing-on fee " and then paying them 25K week.

For those who think seriously about such things .. I read that Rudi Skacel's transfer back to Hearts netted the Saints £1.6 million - now that I do call... a good deal.
