Klaxons - Surfing The Void

Is it any good? Heard a bit of some of the new stuff, sounded different (for them). That said I wasn't a huge fan of the first album.

Cannot stop listening to The Suburbs. One the best albums I have heard in absolutely ages. Cannot wait to see Arcade Fire on Friday at Leeds!

Been listening to a radio drama adaptation of The Birds, by Daphne De Maurier. I recorded it the other week. Pretty good too, and fairly faithful to the original story.

The dross that is Carl Barat's new song: http://luminousplectrum.blogspot.com/2010/08/carl-barat-run-with-boys.html

I predict the Klaxons album isn't going to be as good as its cover art.

Oh deary... deary... me. He did have notoriously bad taste in music, until he met Doherty. Seems he may have lost his way! haha! That is shocking.

My ears are currently being treated to Band of Skulls - 'Baby Darling Doll Face Honey'. A Southampton Band, ruddy good aswell. They use to be called 'Fleeing New York' and held "ClubFleeingNewYork" down at Talking Heads every friday night, where they would host bands from the south and every other week they would play at the end. A lovely bunch, and i must admit i was gutted when they folded. Good job that just days later they reformed, under a differnt label, with a different name and bugger me... they all of a sudden find themselves on the soundtrack for that 'Twilight' vampire filmy malarky... Meaning my days of watching em' for jut a couple of gold coins were well and truly over.

Here's a link if ya fancy a gander at what they are like...

I didn't know Band of Skulls were from Southampton, heard their album the other day and liked it! Very bluesy.

Learn something new every day hey Mikey. Whats more encouraging is that they have a shed load of excellent material that didnt make it onto that album, so expect to hear more from them. They are fast becoming very, very big across the pond, recently sold out quite a few 2,000+ venues over there and are now on tour down under. Looking forward to them coming back home, could well be playing The Guildhall by then though.

Sounds like they've got big things ahead of them then. Just giving the album another listen now and it's very much like The White Stripes in some aspects. Will have to go and see them when they come to Southampton!

Ah, The Byrds and those riffs by Jim McGuinn - now you're talking!

I used to watch Fleeing New York at the Institute union bar in by student days. I caught a glimpse of the Band of Skulls track on MTV2 a few weeks ago and was quite impressed. Beats the Delays.

I thought it was just one of them, and even then it was just as a student. The singing is very American. Great album, would be good to see them at the Guildhall.

It was just one of them??? Yeh I s'pose it does sound very american... probably why they are doing so well over there. They have always had that sound though so cant be accused of selling out. They came back to do a show at Talking Heads, couple of weeks before the world cup, just to say "We know where we belong" sort of thing. Really are a nice group and I hope they do make it big time. Hate the new name though... 'Fleeing New York' is so much better than 'Band of Skulls'

There was an article in today's paper about the fortieth anniversary re-release of Miles Davis' *****es Brew. I am a big fan of his earlier stuff (especially the "cool" period - mid-to-late 50s), but I find this seminal jazz-rock fusion album virtually unlistenable. Every once in a while I'll give it another try, but never seem to make it to the end! Anybody a fan of *****es Brew?

Sorry about those asterisks - it's that bloody swear-filter that's at fault. Bastard! [Oooooh! Bastard is OK!]

Love it! I'm a huge fan of the vast majority of Miles' work.

Certainly 'Brew' is less accessible than 'Birth of the Cool' but if Miles had spent his career churning out endless easy listening jazz he wouldn't be remembered as a pioneer and as one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.

How do you get on with 'In a Silent Way' Hamilton Saint?

For me, 'Brew' follows on from where 'In a Silent Way' left off and pushes the envelope further.

IMHO it is meant to challenge you and take you on a disturbing journey through a range of emotions.

At times I find it quite uncomfortable listening and I feel uneasy and edgy, but then the mood changes and a short intercession induces feelings of harmony and resolution before all too suddenly we're off into the next excursion into the unknown.

I try to treat it (and all music) as a journey; it isn't always going to be pleasant, in fact at times it can be a little scary but I find the more that music challenges me as the listener, the more involved I can become and the more I can potentially get out of it.

If you find yourself thinking "stop the ride, I want to get off" you're in exactly the place that Miles wants you to be.

I would say try to relax, but I don't think that's the point.

Don't relax until Miles induces you to.......but it won't last......soon you'll be feeling lost and out of control again.

All IMHO of course.

Just got back from seeing Two Door Cinema Club at New Slang in Kingston. Amazing gig, up there with the liveliest i've been to definitely! I'd recommend that you see them in a small venue as opposed to somewhere like Shepherd's Bush. Watch out for some more club gigs that they might do.
