manji Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 Sleepy Sun - Fever Just been listening to that ! Excellent album.
Kadeem Hardison Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 Julian H. Cope, you are a bellwether of good new music. Please keep recommending albums, so that the likes of manji and I can follow your guidance.
Ludwig Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 Curve-The Way Of Curve Why are you listening to a best-of?
Ludwig Posted 13 July, 2010 Posted 13 July, 2010 Perfume Genius - Learning, so frustrated I couldn't get hold of tickets to see him at Hoxton Hall. This record is truly incredible.
Bath Saint Posted 14 July, 2010 Posted 14 July, 2010 Why are you listening to a best-of? Don't be such a music snob, Ludwig. Listening to a 'Best of' is a great way for manji to get into these bands he hasn't heard of before. manji, I would recommend 'Doppelganger' and 'Cuckoo' once you get a feel for Curve's more commercial stuff.

SuperMikey Posted 14 July, 2010 Posted 14 July, 2010 Anna Von Hausswolff – Singing From The Grave Brilliant album from the next big thing in Swedish music. I would describe her as halfway between Laura Marling and Kate Bush, very heartfelt and emotional songs but also very well written songs. Get in there quick before everyone else does!
Bentley Posted 15 July, 2010 Posted 15 July, 2010 Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot... The Son of Chico Dusty - Very good. Chima Anya - New Day - Album of the year so far for me. Bombay Bicycle Club - Flaws - Oh, how appropriate an album title. Easily the worst album I've heard this year. Fortunately given to me from free promo, I feel for those who spent money on it.
St Landrew Posted 15 July, 2010 Posted 15 July, 2010 One of those bands who I used to occasionally buy singles and nothing else from were The Move. Truth is, I've always had a soft spot for anything Roy Wood was involved in, because he was a pop record writing master, and because he was a rocking bugger too. He's probably most famous, to many people, for Wizzard, but his bands were so much more than that. They were laced with upbeat, progressive pop numbers, with a hint of humour, and as catchy as hell. From The Move, I love Fire Brigade, Blackberry Way, but my favourite is Brontosaurus. Have a go:

Haha, I was just arguing with a mate of mine who was saying how great it was, I didn't agree:D

St Landrew Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 Whatever happened to Roy Wood, I loved the Move and Wizzard ELO did some very good stuff too. Electric Light Orchestra..? Pah..! No, they were OK. They certainly were a part of going to The Cowherds pub. It was Art For Art's Sake [10CC] and Living Thing, as I remember, that was forever on that bloody jukebox. Of course, I never selected those tracks, having an appreciation of a rather more heightened expression of musical flavours, by then. Woody has his own website.
St Landrew Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 Great single. Stumbled over it again, while looking for something from the Isley Brothers Sly and the Family Stone - Family Affair If anyone has a funkier voice than Sly Stewart then I've yet to hear it.

I'm assuming that piece of info was NOT for my sake ! I'm just listening to some old Mott The Hoople stuff !!

St Landrew Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 I'm assuming that piece of info was NOT for my sake ! I'm just listening to some old Mott The Hoople stuff !! I can't see the connection, dude. Does it have a connection..?
St Landrew Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 Try broadening your choice of music Suggest away..!
chrisobee Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 Suggest away..! If you insist More soulful than funky to be fair.
chrisobee Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 I can't see the connection, dude. Does it have a connection..? Why should there be a connection ? I was just pointing out I surely knew that 10cc recorded Art for Art's Sake but I was listening to Mott.
St Landrew Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 If you insist More soulful than funky to be fair. Poor attempt, although nice. And I thought you were going to give me an obvious James Brown track like: Get On Up
St Landrew Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 Why should there be a connection ? I was just pointing out I surely knew that 10cc recorded Art for Art's Sake but I was listening to Mott. My excuse to say Dude. After all, you mentioned Mott The Hoople.

St Landrew Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 No kidding:lol: If I said Dude, and meant it, I'd need a sickbag to throw up in.
chrisobee Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 If I said Dude, and meant it, I'd need a sickbag to throw up in. Yuk, another American English slang term, just avoid dudette otherwise I'll throw up !
St Landrew Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 Yuk, another American English slang term, just avoid dudette otherwise I'll throw up ! Ah, the kindred spirit, eh..? BTW: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amnjZtNDKqk&feature=fvw
chrisobee Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 Ah, the kindred spirit, eh..? BTW: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amnjZtNDKqk&feature=fvw Thanks, now it's playing twice and clearly not in sync:rolleyes:
St Landrew Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 There's a bit of echo on the original track. Try playing them ever-so-slightly out of sync and get a concert-hall effect.
St Landrew Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 Anyway, off up that wooden hill. Time for Tales From The Mausoleum Club.
chrisobee Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 Anyway, off up that wooden hill. Time for Tales From The Mausoleum Club. Ok, hope the stairlift is working;)

RonManager Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 Thus endeth old farts hour. Yeah, well said. I'm really into this band that hasn't actually been formed yet. They're going to be the best thing ever, but I will cease liking them after their first album because they will sell out to 'the man'.

I used to be into them just before you thought of them, but I've moved onto the next band now.

Deppo Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 I've formed a band with the man that sells the Echo in Southampton City Centre.
RonManager Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 I've formed a band with the man that sells the Echo in Southampton City Centre. I'm currently gigging with a hedgehog and an old oak tree.
RonManager Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 We're the best thing since sliced bread. Lucky you. The hedgehog and the tree are having 'musical differences' and I fear a split may ensue.
Block 5 Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 (edited) If you insist More soulful than funky to be fair. Er.......not even particularly soulful IMHO. Try this instead.......... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ig2ekGAeTLc Edited 16 July, 2010 by Block 5
Block 5 Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 Great single. Stumbled over it again, while looking for something from the Isley Brothers Sly and the Family Stone - Family Affair If anyone has a funkier voice than Sly Stewart then I've yet to hear it. Sly and the Family Stone: excellent band. Mainly remembered for 'It's a Family Affair' on the 'There's a Riot Goin On' album and 'Everyday People' from 'Stand!'. Often overlooked is their debut album from 1967 (such a good year for music) 'A Whole New Thing'; this is my personal favourite. It's from that transitionary period when soul was starting to morph into funkier more experimental areas (mirroring the change in rock and pop) as artists began trying psychedelics! I agree with your comment about Sly's voice, incredible. I would have to say JB or Eddie Bo are just as funky, and what about George Clinton???? Is there a funkier band that Funkadelic / Parliament? [video=youtube;f05e_ZUxR-M]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f05e_ZUxR-M Nope.
Deppo Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 We're the best thing since sliced bread. Having said that, bread was well past its' sell by date when it became sliced anyway...
chrisobee Posted 16 July, 2010 Posted 16 July, 2010 Er.......not even particularly soulful IMHO. I agree but best I could be bothered to find at 2.30 am, twas anyway a private conversation;)

The best listen i have had in a long time. also loving Two Door Cinema Clubs album 'Tourist History'. 32 minutes of pure funked up musical brilliance.
