Hamilton Saint Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 (edited) I recently managed to buy "Birthday Party" by "Idle Race" - Jeff Lynnes first band. I had it on vinyl back in the early 70`s and it`s brilliant! I have a double LP by Idle Race (on vinyl) called Impostors of Life's Magazine. It's on Daffodil records, and was released only in Canada (1973). Edited 27 November, 2009 by Hamilton Saint
miserableoldgit Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 I have a double LP by Idle Race (on vinyl) called Impostors of Life's Magazine. It's on Daffodil records, and was released only in Canada (1973). I was very pleased to get the Idle Race CD and also a retrospective of Simon Dupree and the Big Sound. Before they went all "Pop" with "Kites" etc they were a really good R & B type band. I saw them a couple of times at The "old" Concorde Club at The Bassett. Their first album "Without Reservations" (1969) was excellent. This double cd (Part of My Past)includes both the stereo and mono mixes of that album plus loads of other stuff. Those were the days!!

saint_bert Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 Mechanix is no Four Horsemen. My thoughts exactly I dont even like Megadeath. Just been told in no uncertain terms today they dump over Metallica Just had to make sure I was right in thinking that was a silly comment said to me by a dumb work friend
saint_bert Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 Dragonforce-Through fire and the flames. Nearly died to this song at the guildhall. Good times
Rattlehead Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 Megadeth's Rust In Peace is awesome and they've done some other good stuff (Peace Sells, So Far So Good So What mainly) and both great bands but Metallica > Megadeth. Dragonforce on the other hand are one of the worst bands I have ever seen live. I cannot stand Dragonforce. F*cking ponces with sh*t music IMO.

Rory Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 The very band. Only found out by reading today's Guardian guide.
Hamilton Saint Posted 29 November, 2009 Posted 29 November, 2009 I just listened via BBC i-player to a Radio 2 programme by Bob Harris called The Songs The Beatles Gave Away. It's about songs written by John, Paul and George which were were recorded by other artists. Some of the songs were leftovers; some were written to order. I was familiar with most of the songs, but there are few rarities featured on there, and several demo recordings featuring Paul and George. The interviews heard feature Paul, George, George Martin, Johnny Gentle, Cilla Black, Mary Hopkin and Jackie Lomax. The music features Johnny Gentle, Billy J. Kramer, The Fourmost, Cilla Black, Peter & Gordon, The Applejacks, The Strangers, P.J. Proby, Chris Barber, the Black Dyke Mills Band, Mary Hopkin, Jackie Lomax, Carlos Mendes and Doris Troy. This programme is available on BBC i-player until Saturday, Dec. 5th. It's an hour long. Worth a listen, if you're a Beatles fan. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00p1mv7/The_Songs_The_Beatles_Gave_Away/
Marsdinho Posted 30 November, 2009 Posted 30 November, 2009 Of Hospice fame ? Schitt thats poorly advertised toolate for me now. Me too, wanted to go. But had made other plans that I couldnt back out of..
Block 5 Posted 30 November, 2009 Posted 30 November, 2009 Strictly Kev - "Raiding the 20th Century". A very clever mix assembled with Pro Tools that chronicles the history of the cut up and features Paul Morley's narration and snippets from William Burroughs, Grandmaster Flash, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, John Lennon and dozens of others.
Block 5 Posted 30 November, 2009 Posted 30 November, 2009 Watch this. Total genius. Check out Prince Charles on the 1s & 2s. http://www.vimeo.com/6489862
St Landrew Posted 30 November, 2009 Posted 30 November, 2009 Jethro Tull - Aqualung [the whole lot again].
Hamilton Saint Posted 1 December, 2009 Posted 1 December, 2009 Jethro Tull - Aqualung [the whole lot again]. Have you listened to the remastered CD? It includes a long interview with Ian Anderson where he describes the circumstances of how that LP was recorded - a new studio that he was not happy with. An interesting listen.
Pancake Posted 1 December, 2009 Posted 1 December, 2009 The Black Crowes - Southern Harmony & Musical Companion. So much is good about this album that I can over look the pastiches of 70's blues rock.
Pancake Posted 1 December, 2009 Posted 1 December, 2009 Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues - Skip James.
Julian H. Cope Posted 1 December, 2009 Author Posted 1 December, 2009 Andrew Weatherall - A Pox On the Pioneers
St Landrew Posted 2 December, 2009 Posted 2 December, 2009 Have you listened to the remastered CD? It includes a long interview with Ian Anderson where he describes the circumstances of how that LP was recorded - a new studio that he was not happy with. An interesting listen. No I haven't. My only gripe with that vinyl album is that it was a tad undynamic. That is, although it has a reasonably quiet noise floor, it doesn't go loud. It's a possibility that a strange studio, to Anderson, brought about that effect. Happily, the Aqualung album has so much variety, skill and scope that one tends to overlook the quiet nature of it, and turn the volume up accordingly.
St Landrew Posted 2 December, 2009 Posted 2 December, 2009 But now I'm listening to The Moody Blues - To Our Children's Children's Children. After all these years, I still love it. I can NOT play it for years, and then put it on, and it is crisp and new. TMB have/had no peers, and so you either loved them or hated them, because there was nothing else of their shade. I think this might be my favourite TMB album, but I'm about to put Every Good Boy Deserves Favour on [note musicians], and this is the most assessible TMB album, so we'll see how it goes. I'm betting I flip the vinyl over to side 2, after I've finished side 1. Here goes.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 2 December, 2009 Posted 2 December, 2009 I've finally joined the digital age, with the Mrs. buying me an iPod for Birthday. First download, and can't stop playing Leon Russell's Retrospective. The most underrated man in Rock music, pure genius.
Pancake Posted 2 December, 2009 Posted 2 December, 2009 Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power. I can never get over the controlled chaos of this album, I cant decide whether I prefer the original Bowie mix or the 97 Pop remaster...
Pancake Posted 2 December, 2009 Posted 2 December, 2009 The Vines - Highly Evolved. The most "meh" album ever.
Deppo Posted 2 December, 2009 Posted 2 December, 2009 Sun Ra And His Myth Science Solar Arkestra - The Antique Blacks
Rory Posted 2 December, 2009 Posted 2 December, 2009 The Vines - Highly Evolved. The most "meh" album ever. A truly dog sh!t album.
St Landrew Posted 2 December, 2009 Posted 2 December, 2009 Was watching Delia Smith last night. I still chuckle over how good she is, and how the nation of cooks and chefs note her every word and new idea. I note that Cranberries are back on the menu. That'll clear the shelves of them, and send the price of them rocketing again. But I digress. While watching, I noted how many excellent tunes were being played in the background. There was excellent stuff by Nick Drake, Beach Boys, Ella Fitzgerald, etc.. and quite a few notable others. I ended up listening as much as watching.
