Pancake Posted 30 April, 2009 Share Posted 30 April, 2009 ****ing love the System. Im trying to compile a Spotify playlist of covers of metal songs by metal bands... help. Mahcine Head - Hallowed... and Holy Diver by Killswitch started me off.
Rattlehead Posted 30 April, 2009 Share Posted 30 April, 2009 Never really got into them but loving it so far. I've had Toxicity for a while and downloaded all of their other albums in one go this week. On the covers, good choices so far. A few suggestions mainly from my ipod: Entombed have done some Stormtroopers Of Death covers, including March Of The SOD and Sargeant D. Heard them on Spotify actually and was impressed. Metallica's cover of Remember Tomorrow is excellent. Metallica have done loads of decent covers actually - Last Caress, So What, Am I Evil, Breadfan, Crash Course In Brain Surgery, The Small Hours, Die Die My Darling etc... I also like their cover of Loverman by Nick Cave. Therapy? Iron Man. I think Diane might have been a cover as well, albeit not very metal. Testament - Nobody's Fault (Aerosmith). Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams (Eurythmics!). Not really a MM fan though. Megadeth - These Boots (Nancy Sinatra?). Make sure it's the original version and not the remastered one as the latter has loads of the words beeped out for copyright reasons and 'humour'. Megadeth's covers are generally poor but this is a good one. Bonded By Blood - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, even if it is a bit silly. Motorhead - Louie Louie (can't remember who did the original). Someone did a good version of Troops Of Doom by Sepultura but can't remember who. Sepultura - Procreation Of The Wicked (Celtic Frost). This is excellent IMO. Aerosmith - Train Kept A Rollin' (Yardbirds). Guns N' Roses - Mama Kin (Aerosmith). Pantera - Planet Caravan (Sabbath). Biohazard - After Forever (more Sabbath). Sacred Reich or Faith No More - War Pigs. Slayer - Dissident Aggressor. Anthrax - Antisocial. Scott Ian of Anthrax also did a decent cover of Metallica's Welcome Home. Chris Cornell - Billie Jean (not metal at all obviously). Black Crowes - Hard To Handle. Also not metal but Free's cover of Crossroads (only a live version I think) is the best I've ever heard. Might squeeze in somewhere if metal is expanded to include rock maybe. Ditto Hendrix All Along The Watchtower. Embarrassing but Ugly Kid Joe's cover of NIB or even Cats In The Cradle. Shouldn't have mentioned that last one really. Obviously very few of these are better than the originals but there's some really good stuff on this list. Bound to be loads more as well. Cheers mate, will check some of those... a lot do fall outside the realms of metals songs covered by metal atrists though! Completely forgot about the Sepultura one. manji Posted 1 May, 2009 Share Posted 1 May, 2009 I will check out Orn's mix at some point but too busy at the moment. On that note, I think it would be sensible to have a thread for each mix (as before). Kind of makes it more obvious a new one is up and then comments and discussion on that don't get mixed up with general comments. IMO of course. manji, please can you remind us about your sort of music? I seem to recall you like stuff nobody else likes, or has even heard of. What are you ? Moderator of this thread ? St Landrew Posted 1 May, 2009 Share Posted 1 May, 2009 Heard Neil Young - Like A Hurricane on Mark Radcliff's show this afternoon. First time in donkey's years, and I have it in my collection. Now I can't get it out of my head. Superb stuff, with Neil Young at his very best.
St Landrew Posted 1 May, 2009 Share Posted 1 May, 2009 Only Neil Young could chase away Neil Young. Now listening to Cinnamon Girl. Brilliant. I can see the next tracks lining up in an orderly queue.

St Landrew Posted 3 May, 2009 Share Posted 3 May, 2009 Dire Straits - Dire Straits The band's original album was something of a revelation because it was so different in the pop world at the time; and when Communique came out, I thought we'd got a superbly jazzy/folky/pop 4 piece group. But they went all mainstream, and by the time of Brothers In Arms I couldn't listen to anything they produced any longer. But this one is very good indeed. Stand outs for me are Water Of Love, Six Blade Knife, In The Gallery, Wild West End and Lions.

Ponty Posted 4 May, 2009 Share Posted 4 May, 2009 Not bad efforts tbh. Despite me disliking both songs in their original format I did listen to your versions all the way through and, believe me, that's an achievement (on your part!). Where did you shoot the "Violet Hill" video though, 1986?

Ludwig Posted 4 May, 2009 Share Posted 4 May, 2009 Picked up a copy of the Dark was the Night compilation on Friday and have been listening to it all weekend. There are a few top tracks, notably from Yeasayer, Feist, The National but a few dud ones too. I like pretty much all of it tbh. Thought the Arcade Fire one was a bit naff though. St Landrew Posted 5 May, 2009 Share Posted 5 May, 2009 Since getting in late, I've been listening to quite a bit of stuff. But as soon as I found my Peter Gabriel collection looking a little lonely I had to start with PG1 and Moribund the Burgermeister. That led to PG2 and PG3. Never got around to owning PG4, for some odd reason, so it's straight onto So. Must go to bed though. Important day tomorrow.
Hamilton Saint Posted 5 May, 2009 Share Posted 5 May, 2009 New Dylan album - Together Through Life I'm a big Dylan fan, but this one is a major disappointment. Dylan produced it (using his Jack Frost pseudonym) and the arrangements and mixing are very poorly done. A pretty uninteresting batch of songs, too. New Neil Young album - Fork in the Road This is a solid effort. Play it in your car - and play it LOUD.
