jam Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 Gutted he has left, he is rare talent that I would have loved to watch in the stripes for a season. Contrary to many posters on here I feel his departure will hurt us and affect our promotion hopes. Yes we won games without him last year and on Saturday, but there isn't a better wide right in the NPC in my opinion, so no matter who plays wide right the side will be weakened. We are going to have to buy players better than we have in two or three positions. Even with that money, it is not going to be easy. I hope de Ridder shines and any further money spent gets us the right guys. It's not impossible that we can get promoted on the back of this money I agree about how good it would have been to see a bit more of him but I can't help think that this is better for the club. Partly as I always felt that he wouldn't stick around for long but also because I think he was always going to get all the attention this season - both on and off the field. Hopefully teams will see us as a weakened force for his departure while we will be able to bring in a couple or three players that will really strengthen us in depth... hackedoff Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 Me too, and then said Speedie and Dixon would be better, given the right coaching. Idiotic statement. That,s what was so bad about that deal. Not what we got for Shearer but how the money got wasted.

Sheaf Saint Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 Glad it's over with now so we can forget about it and move on. Shame we didn't get to see how he would have fared in the NPC but hey ho, most of us probably thought we were going to lose him in the January window anyway. The big positive I see from it, apart from the obscene amount of money Arsenal will have paid of course, is that it is yet another great advert for our academy. In the last 5 years we have seen Walcott, Bale and now Oxlade-Chamberlain get mega-money moves to top premiership teams, which must surely be a huge draw to any young kids (or, indeed, their parents) when deciding on the best club to join to progress their careers. Minsk Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 £12m+£3m in add-ons for a player Saint Lard doesn't think is good enough for the Championship. I guess Wenger doesn't agree with you Lardy! Excellent piece of business by Cortese. To be honest, I am sad to see him go as he was fantastic to watch; however, I am also happy that the saga of his transfer has finished. I was getting pretty bored with reading about the speculation. I just hope the money is used to enhance our first team and that good new players arrive in the next day or two. Secret Site Agent Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 You know, considering NC's business nouce, and the Five year plan, and the Estate of ML, and the target to be playing champions league, we could always buy him back in a couple of years when he hasn't played a decent game, is warming the bench, and enjoyed his time here more than there. But not at 12 m + 3m. Lower than that.
Cestrian Saint Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 Great bit of business. He's a silly boy though. Trying to run before he can walk. Matthew Le God Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 (edited) http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/aug/08/alex-oxlade-chamberlain-arsenal Why do the Guardian think it's a £5m deal rising to £10m? That would be rubbish. Every other source suggests £!2m to £15m. Do the Guardian know something we don't, or is this just really lazy journalism? It is lazy journalism, as that deal doesn't see "Saints' previous transfer records blown out of the water" as the Saints OS describes. £12m rising to £15m however does and that is what the PA, BBC, Sky, The Independent and numerous others are saying. scotty Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 good riddance to the glory seeking mercenary !!! ... Let's just see how well he can cope with the sudden pressure placed on his shoulders !!! (sure the old man must be happy with the pay check mind). A bloody great bit of business NC. Hope the proceeds are invested wisely to bolster our already good squad ... ONWARDS AND UPWARDS !!! At the end of the day it is only a good deal if we re-invest it. If we don't then we are a fair bit worse off. I have no doubt that Cortese will put a lot of that into a couple of new signings. I just hope they are brought in before the end of the transfer window. In January prices are badly inflated as clubs become desperate. Plus it means they have more time to settle into the squad. Alex will be a great player no doubt about it. He could go on to be one of the best players of his generation. But however you look at it £15m for a 17 year old who has only ever played in division three is crazy. The pressure on the lad is going to be huge. there wont be much immediate pressure on him if the Walcott deal is anything to go by. He'll just keep the bench warm, thats all, I never understood why wenger splashed out on theo and never seemed to start him. And as for erikkson taking him into the england squad and then leaving him on the bench in the match that put us out, I will never understand that as long as I breathe. Sheer lunacy. I hope AOC does well, no hard feelings here.
Lighthouse Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 If I've got this right, Leibherr bought Saints for £15m and now the family effectively has a free NpC club with 25,000 gates and no debt. Hopefully this will persuade the Leibherrs to invest more into Saints, particularly in the youth set up. Sorry to see Chamberlain go, but that's a LOT of a money for a teenager who's only ever played in the 3rd team of English football. If anyone is disappointed, imagine if we spent £15m on a kid from Italian Serie C. You'd be livid. Great deal.
austsaint Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 Arsenal's Playground XI for the Carling Cup grows stronger. We've got a good deal for the Club, we don't *need* him if the Leeds performance and result is anything to go by and there's no more silly speculation. All in all a good day if you ask me. I was gutted when Walcott and Bale left, this time I'm actually pleased. I agree. Promising player who wanted away to the glittering lights - there's still a huge doubt as to whether he will cut it in the Prem. The deal for us is top drawer; balances a few accounts and funds a quality addition or two. You have to admire the way this Club is being run now, on and off the field. The thing with Cortese is you don't have to like him but he is very easy to respect as a Chairman.

hutch Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 No doubt they've paid a pretty big premium for the brand. Walcott went on to score a hattrick for England. How many players have done that? And Bale has torn Europe's best sides a new one in the CL. Personally, I think it's a great deal for all concerned. Arsenal get potentially a great player. We lose a player who wasn't really a mainstay of the current first team. We get a HUGE sum of money that wasn't even on the horizon a year ago. We get to concentrate on the job in hand. We can now come for his father again. Apparently he doesn't wash, and doesn't know who his father is.
andymcrowe Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 Yes but he also happened to be a proven Premiership striker. Our big mistakes were no sell on clause and more importantly wasting the receipt on several mediocre players. I'd spend half of it on a player with a proven goalscoring record at champ/prem level and keep the rest on hold until the Xmas transfer break or for next season. SNSUN Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 1) Sad to see him go. He's a good player who did very well in his first season for us last season, especially with Puncheon throwing a paddy. 2) If the figure of £12 million with £3 million in add ons is correct (surely with a sell on fee), then that is a fantastic deal, and with the club not needing the money to pay bills, surely the majority of that will be re-invested into the playing squad. 3) As bitter as I am at his sale, I do hope he succeeds at Arsenal. And hey, if not, perhaps he'll re-sign when we reach the Premiership in the near future. 4) It's thanks to Markus Liebherr that this was possible - just two and a bit years ago, a player like Oxo would have been on his way for a lot less than the figure quoted. 5) There's no need to riot over this on the streets of Southampton... 6) I'm glad this whole saga has been laid to rest before the August transfer window has shut. (Although I would rather have seen it settled earlier in the summer.) 7) We still have Lallana, Fonte and Lambert, all of whom are more key to us at present. 8 ) Spend spend spend! Danish Saint Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 I'm in two minds about this deal. First of all, £15 mill reported for an almost 18-year old with no experience other than Leauge 1, is just crazy. Having said that, I'm happy Saints are on the receiving end of that amount of money. It's a solid piece of business given his injury record and all. I'm also a bit gutted, as I would have liked him to become another Saints legend. Now he falls into the category of players that got away alongside Walcott, Bale, Surman, Bridge etc. But as this is Saints, you kind of get used to have these talents leaving the club. On the other hand, it's nice to see a hefty transfer fee being paid, as it softens the blow.

ericofarabia Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 Shame to see him go, but it seems his mind was made up for him to leave by his dad, and to be fair to the lad, how many on here could honestly say they would stay at their with employers if another company were dangling a contract probably a minimum of 4 times more (in reality probably much more than that) in your face? NA & NC have done brilliantly for the club, in first getting him to sign a contract last year and now to get rid of him before the whole circus proves to be a distraction and effect the whole day to day running and preparations of the team. Spending the money wisely will not be an easy situation. Look at Newcastle, firstly, obviously you need the desire to actually part with some of it!, but then trying to discuss a sensible deal when the person opposite you knows you have a large wedge burning a hole in your back pocket may get NC hackles up. I wouldn't be surprised if we maybe just add one or half decent additions, or even more likely take out some loan in view to buy type deals and reaccess the whole situation in January. I wish AOC all the best in the future, it would be yet another feather in our cap showing potential youngsters that this is the place to be if you want to receive the best chance of progressing to the top, albeit with or without us!! In the meanwhile, with this new found wealth maybe the Car Parking freebie time can be extended back to 30 mins as a goodwill gesture to the fans

Professor Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 This substantial fee is only worth having if it is used immediately to increase the quality on the field. In the bank until January it does no good at all. That doesn't mean it's easy to spend it well because it would be easier to spend it badly. So unless the targets are already known the club is going to have to handle this very carefully. Maybe they should now take the rest of the month to reappriase who they bring in to ensure we move up a level.

But, I also find it difficult to really spot areas on the pitch where we are weak at the moment. We are in a nice position, where we can retain it in a transfer kitty until January if necessary. That said, I'd like to see some decent signings of proven Premiership quality akin to Connolly, older players with the experience to get us into the Premiership and then stay there.
