Chamberlain signs for Arsenal

Without wishing to sound bitter, yes, Mark Chamberlain seems to have got what HE wanted.

Took him out of Portsmouth, brought him to us.

Gets him taught by great coaches at one of the best academies in the UK.

Having seen him show some promise, gets him a transfer to Arsenal.

If you look at it like that, we've been used. Sounds more like an agent than a father.

Trouble is, if he was 4m, now when we ask, they'll want 6 or 7m.

We're not in a great negotiating position in terms of transfer fees. I can see us going in for a lot of players and pulling out the deals because they're poor value.

would imagine that NC has already agreed any incoming transfer fees

£15m then is a cracking deal for us. The only downside is that now other clubs know we are even more minted then we were before. Which means we have to pay more.

Maybe this will be the start of a chain of events where we might have agreed deals for some other players before this deal was completed?

Enough of this "We took Arsenal to the cleaners" crap. It probably comes from the same people who said "Good riddance" to Bale and then b*tched after the Milan game because we hadn't negotiated a sell-on fee.

We've lost a tremendous talent in AOC but got a very good price for him.

Whether Arsenal overpaid will not be known for years.

Good luck Alex.

As said above I am actually pleased. We went 3 months without him last season and the result was our best run of the season. £12m + £3m (if true) is absolutely unfecking believable.

I'm disappointed to lose the player but he was always going to go at some point in the future and the longer it went on, the more of a distraction it would have become. Can't believe the figures though, for someone that has had one season at League 1 level.

Daily Mail reporting £12m and £3m but not the first time the paper has just recycled somebody else's news and they've been consistently wrong on this story. Only need to wait for the oracle that is the mirror now...

They're quoting the PA figures

The world has gone mad! £15M!! I thought Theo showed more potential before he left us but lets see if Alex can make an impact at that level in his first season.

I am not that bothered as I was when Theo left, it is a different situation as now we have a replacement in de ridder already and Guly looked good down the right last year. We have conducted this in the right way and he has left on our terms at the begining of the season. This shows how much we have come on as a football club and are now being run very well as a business!

Well done Saints COYR!!

Whats the betting a couple of other deals have been already agreed before this was announced.

I hope so, but surely if contracts had been signed an announcement would have been made? If not by us, then by the selling club. I'm not sure, especially in this day and age, we'd have been able to get everything signed and keep it quiet! And if by done you mean one of those gentlemen's agreements, then brace yourself for a sudden bump up in asking price!

Firstly, AOC has never played above the third tier of English football. And secondly I think it's safe to assume we have got a sell on clause in this deal. Cortese may be a lot of things but he is not stupid.

So with regards to the first point at least (because the second one cannot be proved yet), yes, we have taken them to the cleaners.

For the record, the £12 million up front and £3m in add-ons was told to me by a reliable source. I would not have published it if I didn't believe it is true.

Good luck to Chamberlain. Onwards and upwards.

i don't beleive it will be that much, more likely the Guardian £5m + £5m

Another knock suffered in pre-season delayed his return to action as he sat out Saturday's opening day win in the Championship over Leeds United, meaning that he moves into the top flight having never played above the third tier of English football.

Stay classy, Saints. You can still be respectful to someone as they leave even if you think they've treated you poorly.

BUT, that's only a minor gripe. I'm not nearly as unhappy about seeing Oxo go as I was about Bale, and if we've actually got £15million out of this, you have to be absolutely chuffed with that. Well done to the club.

take no pleasure from "southampton" products, walcott, Bale whoever doing well for other clubs

Shame on you, and your like.

You bring discredit to SFC supporters.

Did you even read the post? If you did you neither understood nor thought about about what it said. The whole point is that "the second one can't be proved yet."

Yeah I see what you're saying, but my, well, all of our points are that we've got 15mil for a player who has never played above the 3rd tier. So, whether or not he goes on to be worth more than 15mil in the future (which of course he will) is irrelevant because no player can be realistically worth that price having never played in the Championship before.

Good luck to Oxo, you can't blame him for wanting to get that big contract now as you never know what is round the corner.

Overall, I think if its £12m up front + £3m later then that's a pretty fair price for an 18 year old with less than a season's experience in L1 - compare that to Connor Wickham and I think Cortese's done a good job. You really can't keep hold of a player when they want to go so get the best for them.

Like others, another CB would be good - Gorrks in a swap for Puncheon and then maybe a another striker. Other than that, hold on for Jan if we need anything then.

Cheerio Alex - don't forget those Teflon pants to stop the splinters getting stuck up your arse...

Another career Wenger can mismanage.

Oh he brings young players on, does he??

Hmmm - show me he does a better job than Ferguson. He doesn't. Love watching Arsenal play but name me a single young Englishman who is now a regular international thanks to Arsene? He doesn't believe in international football and I have more chance of winning a trophy this year or next year than the Gooners, sadly...

Well, I'm pretty much of the same opinion as you. If Henderson is valued at £20m, AOC is worth at least £35m. That said, we were never going to get that for a player who had only played third tier football, irrespective of whether he is ten times the player Henderson is or not.

On the face of it, it's an excellent deal. They get one of England's brightest prospects and we get £15m-ish to reinvest in the squad, not just one player. However, I do agree with your sentiments regarding Bale. AOC is not another Walcott-class footballer, he's far superior to that - and to many of other widely-touted youngsters around at the moment.

His decision-making and technique far surpasses many of his age and older (especially Walcott) and I predict he'll be a top PL player within 1-2 seasons.

It's a shame his dad is getting a pension out of it, but oh well...

It's a crazy world the football world.

£15m for a 17-year old lad who's never proved himself in the Championship - let alone the Premiership.

Good luck to the boy. Hope we spend some of the dosh on quality players - which I'm sure we will.

I cannot blame him for going - financial security for life at 18 is fantastic.

If we have got £15m in total then it is a fantastic deal for SFC and a poor one for Arsenal.

I hope he plays but I feel he will not.

Now he has gone he can ****off and if his father pops into the Dell Supporters Club for a drink he will get a warm welcome

Bill, I think you should have used the word possibly a tremendous talent. There is no doubt he is brilliant for a 17 year old but in real terms he is very raw and doesn't seem to have a sharp football brain. his positional play is poor at times and will need a lot of work. Like Walcott in his hurry to get away I think he has gone to the wrong club. I really rate De Ridder who may not be as good as Chamberlain might become but is a far superior footballer at this point in time.

This is always going to happen as long as English football has a small clique of "top clubs". The super rich 5 or 6 can monopolkise the European League places, they will always be able to poach the best players from elsewhere and its happening to other prem clubs, such as Villa and Newcastle, as well as FL clubs. As long as the financial rewards are so massively out-of-step, players like AOC will put the money ahead of everything else.

Alex is a good player but you have to ask how much of the value is due to press hype. I'd say the transfer fee is worth a lot more to Saints than is Alex and de Ridder has already shown that.

Good job, NC.
