Quite a catty statement, esp the last line.

Like to know what is meant by club record. A huge discrepancy between the £15m (12m+3m) cited by our lot and the £12m (£5+£7m) mentioned by some goons.

Thought exactly the same thing.

Another knock suffered in pre-season delayed his return to action as he sat out Saturday's opening day win in the Championship over Leeds United, meaning that he moves into the top flight having never played above the third tier of English football.

Not just catty, that's meow-vellous.

Independent and Press Association reporting £12m in advance and a further £3m in add-ons. If that's the case, we've absolutely taken them to the cleaners.

Arsenal's Playground XI for the Carling Cup grows stronger. We've got a good deal for the Club, we don't *need* him if the Leeds performance and result is anything to go by and there's no more silly speculation. All in all a good day if you ask me. I was gutted when Walcott and Bale left, this time I'm actually pleased.

A good deal for the club, but whether it's great depends on how we spend the money.

I think a lot of fans will agree with you on this. I certainly do.

Just goes to show how far Southampton FC have come since the last time we sold a big player.

No point having a player here who doesn't want to be here. I don't wish him well. Its not like he needs our best wishes. I'm sure his new large weekly wages will make him happy enough as he warms Arsenal's bench. I'll laugh if he gets a serious injury in his first Arsenal reserve match. At least he has probably sorted out his dads pension for the signing on fee alone I expect.

Good Luck to Oxo

However I think this is a BAD deal for Arsenal, they need exp Prem players right now, not a youngster with potential, they will struggle to get a top 4 spot this season without some major signings.

I think this a BAD deal for Oxo, reserve football, bench warming, odd 10 mins as a sub, Carling cup.....just what you want at 18.

If its £12M + £3M add ons then this is a GOOD deal for saints. Just need to make sure that the price of every player we chase dos'nt double because they think we are loaded

Hence why I said good.

If we're to believe that we didn't need to sell, then our position grows stronger. We'll probably never know exactly where the money goes unfortunately.

Pretty sure previous record upfront sale was Dean Richards to Spurs?

I think the previous 'record' could be interpreted a number of ways....Walcott 'fee' of £12M(?) but not paid or Richards upfront fee as you say or...or....

Good post - sums it up well. Can't see this as anything but positive. He isn't as effective and Walcott or Bale. Our team isn't built around him and he's been bought purely on potential and the prestige that seems to come from being a product of our academy.

i hope he gets injured in his first game and his skate Dad gets abuse if he ever comes near st marys again.

take no pleasure from "southampton" products, walcott, Bale whoever doing well for other clubs

I think that is why we signed De Ridder before he left. It would be nice to sign someone else but happy to wait till Jan to ensure we are not mugged ourselves.

Alex Chamberlain has joined Premier League side Arsenal for a club record fee.

Alex Chamberlain has joined Premier League side Arsenal for a club record fee, subject to Premier League and FA approval.

The teenager agreed personal terms and passed a medical this afternoon in one of the biggest deals in Championship history, which sees Saints' previous transfer records blown out of the water.

The deal for the midfielder - who had made it clear he saw his future away from Southampton, was done with Saints in the driving seat for the duration of the protracted negotiations and the transfer was completed on our terms.

The Club had long made it clear that it didn't wish to sell Chamberlain, and would only consider doing so should an offer meet our high valuation of the youngster, who turns 18 next week.

I'm sure the £15m is more likely then!

Let's hope so, to be fair £7m plus another £5m wouldn't have been the worst deal in the world but £12m with £3m in add ons is bordering on erotic.

Alex is the club's second youngest ever first team player, having made his debut aged 16 years and 199 days when he made a late cameo against Huddersfield Town at St. Mary's in League One at the start of March 2010.

He scored on his full first team debut at St. Mary's in a 2-0 win over AFC Bournemouth in the first round of the Carling Cup last year and went on to score ten times in total.

However, Chamberlain missed much of the run-in from the team's run to promotion after picking up an ankle injury at Charlton that has resulted in him failing to make another appearance for the rest of the campaign.

Another knock suffered in pre-season delayed his return to action as he sat out Saturday's opening day win in the Championship over Leeds United, meaning that he moves into the top flight having never played above the third tier of English football.
