The Bench

Mate of mine just txt me to ask why we don't have the "Recarro" style seats in the "dugouts" at SMS but instead have normal seats with "Bench" written on them.

Now as far as I know they've always been like this, but its not something I have ever thought about. Guessing he's seen it on the highlights on BBC.

Anyone got any idea why we haven't gone down the "posher seats on the bench" route?

(He also asked about non-electronic advertising boards - You might guess he is a premiership side fan)

Probably guess he's never actually been to a match?

Very good question and one I've been thinking about for a while now.

The bench is an integral part of the stadium and as a club with ambitions of reaching the Premiership, we should definaely be considering installing some more flashy seats. I've always admired the ones they've had at St. James Park in Newcastle (although Exeter's ground have some nice ones too), which look a bit like the seats you'd get if you were sitting in first class on a plane. It'd also be a nice touch if they included the club crest on them like at Old Trafford, but I expect NC is a bit wary of doing this if the speculation of us having a new badge in the near future has any truth in it. Afterall, he is a shrewed businessman and will now want to have to change the seats after just a year or two of having them. It'd be lovely if the seats were also heated and could massage the players backs, however this would undoubtedly be expensive. Perhaps we could just buy a couple of these and the subs could just switch places every 20 minutes or so.

As for the advertising hoardings, I'm a big fan of the retro non-electronic ones as I think they are not as distracting to the television viewers, and also more environmentally friendly. I wouldn't be wholly against the idea of electric ones (assuming the stadium didn't end up looking like Picadilly Circus LOL ), but if we did get them, hope we would power them using renewable sources such as solar or wind power.I'd would imagine there is definate investment potential to having solar panels all around the roof of St. Marys and we could perhaps sell electricity to the surrounding areas, undercutting the prices of many of the established utility companies. Not only would this be a brilliant money spinner for the club, it would also be very beneficial to the local community.

If your friend wants to meet up for a bit of a chat to discuss some of our ideas, tell him to drop me a PM on here.

One more point I'd like to make (going off on a bit of a tangent, sorry but I only have 3 posts per day ), has anyone else noticed the yellow lines on the edge of the stairs of some of the stands have faded a bit? I think someone at the club should definately be made aware so that something can be done. Hopefully it can be sorted with minimus fuss without destabilising the feel-good factor that is surrounding the club at the moment.

Great Post. After Maynard, we should spend the rest of the Chamberlain money on some really flashy seats

To be fair the guy has a point. Why would you need a sticker on the seat saying bench? Its a bit like having 'warning, may contain nuts' on a packet of KP. Or are footballers really that thick?

You haven't heard the Kevin Davies story regarding poptarts and a toaster then?

The obvious answer to what is a perfectly reasonable question, is that if we installed the huge pointless show-off seats we'd probably need a much bigger bench area, and I'd assume that would mean shifting some ST holders and slightly reducing the capacity. I should think Adkins might have chipped in with something about not wanting players to want to sit on the bench as well.

As for mock-ups, try red with Recaro written on it in white or black. Or maybe aap3. No club is daft enough to have white seats are they ?

if any of the subs do decide to have a blast through Sweet Lamb or Kielder I suggest they could do with FIA-approved seats and six point harnesses.

If however they want to be footballers, they should just sit quietly on whatever they are given and await their chance.

Very good point about the yellow lines though, personally I found it difficult to celebrate any of our goals at the weekend as I was too concerned about -

a. the genre and tempo of songs being sung and how they would be judged by an audience that didn't attend

b. the guttering on the roof of the bike sheds.

sort it out Nicola, we are a laughing stock!

Has it occurred to you that it might be to prevent people with tickets who are too stupid to find their own seats from sitting there ?
