I think that video took me over the edge, its time to get the army on the streets - plastic bullets etc, who cares if it gets worse, who cares if some of these thugs die..... they're spoiling for a war and I would imagine that that is what they are about to get. Thedelldays Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 Ken Livingstone is right. We need to give these people a stake in society, a reason to exist. Bulldozing them down now will work in the short term, but if we just forget about them again once this is all over the problem will persist and you'll have the same situation again in a few years time. You really are so wrong. I used to live in north London and it is full of massive ****s. These people have no respect for the law, carry weapons and cry to the papers when the police stop and search them... These kids do not live in the 3rd world. I suspect all of them have nice clothes, mobile phones. I grew up with less than nothing in the 80s, no home, sometimes no food and many times no hot water... Which is far less than these scum... This cannot be excused and must be crushed It's sad how we are now in. Culture where the police rather stand and watch them. Get the armed forces on the streets and see what these punks do when the law bites back!!!!!

Looking for a white person on the tv looting was like looking for where's Walley. Made me laf today when Terersa May said they have made loads of arrest and have already charged and bailed loads. Whats the point of bail, they will be back at it again. They showed a video of a group kicking in a Dixons or some electrical store and walking out with goods. Didn't see one black bloke. Race has bugger all to do with this, it's a dubious police killing in a deprived area of London that has always had tense relations with the police combined with thousands and thousands of unemployed youths with nothing better to do. As soon as they see the police can't cope it'll spread like wildfire, and it has. Back in the riots of '85 the Met were openly institutionally racist against black people. Everyone knew it, blacks, whites, the politicians and it was seen as socially acceptable. It's a different world today even though I suspect isolated spikes of racism still exist in places. This has bugger all to do with race, it's a disturbance at a peaceful demonstration that has resulted in a series of copycat anarchistic crimes done by unemployed youths that have nothing better to do than jump on the bandwagon Edited 9 August, 2011 by JackFrost

Perhaps your wife suggested that because by using the term 'The Blacks' you lazily grouped many individuals involved in the 'rioting' together with many millions more individuals that weren't and in the process you ignored the other ethnic variations represented in last night's law breaking. Whilst it might be less palatable I suspect it might be more accurate to have said 'It's the English/British again'. Or if you were a deep thinker you might even despair at "The breakdown and fragmentation of our society into groups that feel a part and those that feel apart". The hard fact is that most in society are dishonest and look to get a chance to get something for nothing. By the softening of the Polices authority we now have scenes of anarchy. How do we put the genie back into the bottle? I believe that it should be announced that any person who is caught looting and not with a British passport will be immediately repatriated with his/her family. that would take a lot of people off the streets as the parents would all of a suddden take responsibility. I know this is extreme and many will throw their hands up, but we have got to situation where these gangs are threatening the society as we knew it last week. pap Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 Ultimately, this is our collective fault. If one of my kids went off the rails, it'd be my fault, right? Well, the nation's youth are going off the rails, so collectively, it is the nation's fault. These people haven't sprung up overnight. They have been here all the time, their problems gave been here all the time. We've just ignored then or in some cases, sneered at them from afar. Not so easy to ignore now, right? Way I see it, this goes one of two ways. We either 'crush the scum' and take another plod toward a police state, or we try to create conditions and opportunities so that people don't fancy rioting. It'll probably be the former, as despite the Internet hard man stances on here, what you really want is to apportion blame and have someone else sort it out for you. Saint_Pedro Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 The roots of these appalling events are many and tangled, but for the moment let’s just focus on one: the way Britain’s educational establishment has cringed helplessly in the face of a gang culture that rejects every tenet of liberal society. It’s violent, it’s sexist, it’s homophobic and it’s racist. But it is broadly tolerated by many people in the black community, which has lost control of its teenage youths. Those youths scare the wits out of teachers and social workers – and some police officers, too. The threat of physical violence is ever present in many schools, and one can hardly blame individual teachers for recoiling from it. But we should and must blame those schools and education authorities that have made extra space for gang culture in children’s lives because they believe it is an authentic expression of Afro-Caribbean and Asian identity. We've seen a lot (but not all) of black faces on our TV screens; it’s a shame that the spotlight can’t also fall on those white multiculturalists who made this outrage possible

bridge too far Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 What's been happening the last couple of days is in a whole different league to anything any of those you mentioned did. I'm just trying to read this again - "it's just a right of passage" - I assume you do have a tv? A right of passage, f*****g hell So you read it twice and still didn't understand that I said (to paraphrase) that youth violence is almost like a rite of passage' (I spelt rite wrong, if you get my drift). I WAS NOT suggesting that these dreadful goings-on are! I was pointing out that mob violence has been going on for years and will probably continue to do so. So read my comment for a third time and you just might understand what I was saying.
