Tottenham riots

Croydon is braced for rioting tonight. Old bill everywhere, riot vans out and about and shops being closed down and boarded up. Large groups of blacks hanging around today, although that's normal for around here, mind you.

Today's issues of the Guardian and the 'I'. I guess we will just have to wait and see when the full ballistics report is published. Unlike others on here, I'll have no problem retracting my assumption if I'm proved wrong.

There seems to be a lot of faith being pinned on this Guardian article. Bearing in mind they are fairly anti police and this allegation has come from a "source" then waiting for the outcome of the IPCC inquiry is probably the safest bet.

I saw "killing an innnocent man" mentioned earlier (by yourself I think), but these guys have a split second to think and react and intelligence suggests that they had been following Duggan for some time and that he was possibly going to commit a revenge killing. He was not a fine upstanding citizen by any means, but that doesn't mean he should have been shot. Easy to judge when you aren't in that situation.

Some say that the weapon was inside a sock and therefore not ready for use. Guns can be fired through socks, the sock would act as a filter for any residue left by firing so as to try and disprove that it was the weapon used.

As to the allegations levelled that a senior officer failed to speak to the family. Well, you would be lucky to find any "senior" officer around on a Saturday in the first instance, though there would have been someone on call, but as there would have been a few footy matches as well as the rugby on Saturday, it's also conceivable that they were already tasked to be dealing with those situations.

Irrespective of that, if these youths are so disaffected then trashing and looting the area is not the way to show it. This was merely an excuse for hooded gangsta types to take advantage of a situation and destroy the livelihoods of others who still have to live in that area.

Oh and anyone with any knowledge of modern policing would know that they are so tied up with being ultra PC, multi cultural and diverse that they have to justify everything they do. In triplicate

At the public meeting Victoria Ward is attending:

here was an incredulous laugh when someone told how she heard a grown woman discussing on the bus how she planned to head back into town tonight to swap the clothes she looted from H&M last night for some better ones. Someone else told how a man who had stolen a TV had later been robbed on the street. "That's karma," he said.

This, along with rumours of Birmingham and Croydon being next on the list this evening, just goes to show that :-

1. It has nothing to do with the "cuts", like that toad Ken Livingstone was going on about this morning

2. Nobody is prepared to take responsibilty these days - and I mean parents, teachers, the police, and of course, whichever govt happens to be in power.

Isn't about time, parents took more responsibiilty for their kids - e.g. don't give them mobile phones so early, take an interest in what they are doing and where they are going in the evening etc etc

Very senior police officer just been on the news saying that the family should have had its questions answered by a senior officer / IPCC sooner.

I realise that the IPCC can't respond immediately, because a lot of forensics would have to be carried out but all it needed was someone senior to talk to the family to explain what was happening, and what had to happen. Had someone done that, instead of ignoring the family for nearly 48 hours, maybe a lot of this would have been averted.

I don't think the Guardian is 'anti police'. It IS against police officers who are racist or crooked as are most normal people. What it does do is report on situations more accurately and in an unbiased way, unlike the usual knee-jerk screaming banner headlines of the likes of the Mail.

Incidentally, although the 'riots' in Hackney were probably not caused by this, it transpires that some tensions arose due to a stop and search.

I still think the 'rioters' are bored, disaffected (probably) teenagers who see the opportunity to do a bit of thieving.

so, why are people rioting in lewisham and islington tonight then...

we are seeing police are scared to act in a harsh way as people will complain and the press will tear them to pieces...

its sad when the police have their hands tied and stand there while people openly loot and steal stuff

- Update (Croydon): Best Buy has just been smashed in, and looters have been inside for over half an hour now, only 2 police officers have turned up and they've been forced away from the building and surrounding area.

Police are also under attack in Lewisham.

Which is what I've said on at least 3 occasions!

See that TDD? That's why you've heard that other areas might kick off too. They're kids, climbing on a bandwagon. A bit like fights kicking off after football matches; mindless lemming-like behaviour.

i was on the bus near Hammersmith last night mate, all these rude boys at the back with the most annoying loud birds in tow going on about it was going to start in shepherds bush and they wanted Westfield.....good luck with that , all black / mixed, aged 15-20 i'd say , all classic london estates , i'd love to see it kick off with them and riot squad and watch a few of them take a hiding, pic in todays sun on page 7 of some bird getting nicked, brilliant she looks like typical gobby sIag who abuses the bus driver when he won't let her on with her creditless oyster card.

The police are damned either way. If they come down hard on these thugs they're labelled racist, but these guys are out there literally putting their lives on the line to protect the public for scant respect or reward from many people.

If they stop and search someone, they have to fill a bloody form out to justify why they have done it, but none of these thieves has to justify why they consider it okay to start causing public order problems and then go thieving.

The police have been hamstrung for years by the politically correct policies of Tony Blair and his colleagues and it's sort of all coming home to roost now. If you ask a senior officer in the Met about anything he'll probably talk about diversity because all they want to do is get higher up the greasy pole of success

Haha, so true. I've got a mate who was in the centre of Croydon by chance and is now on the phone telling me what's going on as he watches from the end of the road. He hasn't seen a single white person involved now, and apparently a the 'lads' are shouting 'PDC' which I think is a gang in Croydon that stands for 'Poverty Driven Crew'

Have just watched scenes from Hackney in Sky news and a black lad in a Nike tracksuit got a riot shield smashed in his face, and he fell to the floor. This made me happy.

Problem with cities like London is there's too much lower-class and too much upper-class about. There's little divide, as the middle-classes commute in to work in the city whereas the lower-classes can't afford to do that and the upper-classes have all the expensive property in the city. No wonder these kids are just generally p!ssed off, the shooting was just the spark in the tinder box.

Might be bogus:

……We have not seen any incidents, but will have extra officers on patrol in the centre and suburbs this evening. Thank you.

We are aware of unsubstantiated messages on Twitter, Facebook and BBM about disorder at 6pm in Birmingham this evening……

Disaffected youths? No, they come from like-minded families who have too many kids from various fathers and don't instill the correct mindset in them. Some of these are young kids, right? My Mum knew where I was at all times until say, 17 when I went to uni. She was scary - that's how it should be. No respect, too many of them having more kids than "normal" people, i.e. normal people like on here, regardless of opinion!

No excuse, but possibly an explanation. Too many people with nothing to lose.

The only explanation for this is that there are young criminal thugs out there taking advantage of the situation to cause more mayhem. They have scant respect for the law because they know that even if they get charged with anything, they will at best get a rap on the knuckles. The criminal justice system in this country is a joke and they know it.

Personally, I don't think the shooting has anything to do with the riots. Not for most of the people involved anyway. They're all clearly anarchists who feel now is the time to work together and take out all ther issues they have (probably from their criminal pasts) on the police. Either way it's all pretty disgraceful, and sadly I can see it spreading to other cities around the country in the coming days and weeks.

It's inner London black gangs. They hang around on their estates constantly doing things in groups and now they've got the chance to act up they're taking it. It has got nothing to do with the shooting at all!

200 youths attacking police at West Croydon station currently, have seen a few pictures and it appears to be getting worse too.
