Dazza82 Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 leeds are a decent team only missing becchio from there starting 11 there be around the playoffs still with that squad even tho gradel was a **** hes still a class player and even tho snograss didnt get a look in again hes quality as well, there one of very few midfielders in this league along with lallana chambo and cork who would walk in most teams in this leagues starting 11. Bradley Johnson and Kasper Schmeichel have left from last season. They were also missing Becchio,Somma and Bruce. Snodgrass was very poor yesterday couldnt see why he was rated at 8m by them
SaintNik Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 What I particularly liked was the amount of encouragement Fonte was giving him throughout the game, really good to see. Fonte was a beast today. Martin will get there, but will need to be used more in cup games for now.
saintedwill Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 I thought he had a fairly solid game and showed a lot of potential. I'm not sure loaning him out to play at a lower level will help and he'll probably develop more effectively by playing with the likes of Fonte and Jaidi next to him. Wade Garrett Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 He did well. Nice to see a local lad making his mark.
Chez Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 Can we combine Martin's strength in the air and great talking with Seaborne's quality on the ball and left foot?
Greenridge Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 Can we combine Martin's strength in the air and great talking with Seaborne's quality on the ball and left foot? It's a shame Martin isn't stronger on his left peg as he seems to have the attributes to be a decent centre-half. More time on the pitch will improve him further. Chez Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 if we played him on the right of the two his non existent left foot wouldn't be as exposed.
The9 Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 I thought he looked decent when heading the ball, tracking and marking, and out of his depth when whacking the thing into the crowd on his left foot at least 5 times. But I'd rather he did that than get caught with it, it's just that to progress we need someone who can do something with the ball rather than keep conceding possession. Given time that might still be Martin, but it was the one glaring element of yesterday's performance that wasn't up to Championship standard for me. Everything else was pretty great. ssaints Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 I thought he did well. I think he could have been given more protection especially Fonte and one of the central midfielders dropping giving him more options when he had the ball. I would keep playing his development will accelerate with the confidence of being a first team player. Often at that age players have to adapt physically but he could more than hold his own and he defensive play was excelent. Keep him in the team! Everything else was pretty great. he demonstrated the value of a left footed centre back playing on the left of the two. Tapping it off for a throw might be safe but it puts you under pressure. At this level I expect more. All the fine clearances that turn defence into attack by Seaborne go unnoticed by most, but when you see a right footer giving possession away cheaply it makes you wonder if in some games he might be the better option. Pretty much, and distribution is one of Seaborne's strengths - though the most obvious alternative is someone entirely different who can already do all of the stuff that's required. If nothing else, Fonte's fall and back/head injury yesterday showed how close we are to the whole defence potentially going tits up with our current squad. None of the pairings without Fonte look good Championship level and we need to be able to continue competently in that situation.
Minsk Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 I thought he made some very good tackles and won most things in the air. Looked very dodgy when in possesion however, and bad distribution. The penalty shouldn't have been given, the ball hit his chest then his arm; but, like Chamberlain last season away to Posh, if his arms were not raised the ball couldn't have hit them and no penalty would have been given. To be honest, Leeds' centre forwards today were not of that good a quality. Becchio would have tested him far more and it could well have been a different result had he played. For certain, the more he plays the better he will become. Can we afford his mistakes whilst this happens? That is for Adkins to answer. Personally I still want us to sign a good CB very quickly. One thing I do believe however, is that had Seaborne made some of the mistakes Martin made today a number of posters on here who have been defending Martin would have lambasting him (Seaborne). benjii Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 I think he had a really good game. He had a couple of dodgy moments with the ball at feet but that is probably to be expected at his stage of his career and playing on the biggest stage yet. He's never going to be Beckenbauer but he did all his primary jobs very well - he is very solid in the air, has a decent turn of foot and was well positioned. Leeds' strikers weren't the greatest; will he be able to deal with multi-million pound football legends like Maynard, Long, Sharpe? We shall see. "Possibly" is my current opinion. DrunkenSaint Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 Decent defender. Dreadful footballer. Loan him out and get Gorkss in asap. You what? I've been saying this all last season, give him a chance and he'll do well and yesterday, apart from one little mistake he did very well. I think Jaidi and Seabourne will play cup games and if Gorkss does come to us i think you'll see a rotation between him and Martin to give martin the experiance he needs. whelk Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 nervous? cos he is young. If he was African I guess everyone would be saying his mistakes were 'naive'. I think he could be a future captain
funkymojo44 Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 as someone pointed out earlier, it was harding's pass which was weak and lead to that nervous moment at the back. thought he played really well and playing with fonte can only help his progress. Foxstone Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 A big game for the lad to be thrust into the limelight and he did OK - He will get better and as aothers have said, it is good that a local lad has forced his way through.
Ohio Saint Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 After a decent start, loaning him out would most likely destroy his confidence IMO.
yorkiesaint Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 I thought it showed Martin can do a job. Whatever people say about Leeds lacking cutting edge, in Brown, Gradel, Howson and Snodgrass they have one of the best midfields in the league, and had a lot of possession in the second half. I'm sure becchio would have troubled them more, but it is to the team's credit that it only resulted in one clear chance, and Martin played his part in that. Looking at Cardiff and West Ham yesterday, I thought neither looked as good as saints or leeds on the ball.
ribbo Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 Can we combine Martin's strength in the air and great talking with Seaborne's quality on the ball and left foot? in a perfect world yes, they both have different qualities, but both will become very good defenders for us. Junior Mullet Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 Did OK but we need a better CB this season to play alongside Jose. I wonder whether Martin would progress better out on loan in Div 1 (let's face it he's not played much competitive football in the last few years) or as a bit part player for us this season given our superior squad and training facilities. Tough one. Shame he didnt score against Leeds towards the end - that would have been great for him.
