What did everyone think today? Pretty good for me on the whole. A couple of nervous moments but he is young so thats kind of thing is to be expected. Good positioning for the best part and won plenty in the air. I think the kids got a big future.

Only one nervous moment I could think of - when he was caught in possession at the back, but I think Adkins will stamp things like that out straight away. It's one thing building from the back and it's another taking unnecessary risks.

Other than that, I thought he was brilliant. The timing of his headers, tackles and interceptions was superb, and he looked a real threat from set pieces too.

That bit in the first half was no entirely his fault. Everytime he passed the ball out he just got I straight back. In the end he it played into trouble. The learning point for him is to get shot of it when being closed down. It Thiught it was a a very good display from a very new prospect (and let's not forget that). well done lad. A season long loan to the right club would benefit him massively and us fir that matter.

Well pleased for him. First Championship game, Sky cameras, a few nerves are natural. Apart from the one moment already mentioned, thought he had a solid game. Penalty very harsh, I'm sure the lads will make sure that doesn't dent his confidence. Showed he can do a job for us. Whether he gets a good run prob depends on whether the no. 5 shirt gets filled in the near future.

For all the worry over his first half "moment" I think its important to mention he only got into trouble due to an awful pass from Dan Harding. It wasn't the only time Harding almost played us into trouble today. Thought Martin looked very good. Second half reminded me alot of Chris Baird, evaluated the situation and calmy stuck it out of play where necessary. Solid in the air as well. Don't see why he couldn't be a regular in this division if he continues to play like that. How the linesman gave a pen against him for that though was beyond me! Think most defenders would struggle to get a hand out of the way that quickly I'm sure the attacker didn't even think thats where the ball was about to go!

Better prospect than Seabourne IMO. For better or for worse, he's as close to a percentages footballer as you'll find.

Solid game, though Leeds posed no real threat down the centre. Gradel was the dangerman (incredible Leicester got rid of him to clear space for N'guessan) so his contest with Richardson was the main match-up and key to our defensive display. Thought FR coped relatively well.

Why won't he be a regular starter? He's just helped keep a clean sheet for 93 minutes against one of the best teams in the league. If Nigels happy to start him today I'd say its his place to lose.

Leeds are far from one of the best, they were top 7 last year but they have lost some good players for them. They lacked any sort of spark and rarely troubled us. He did have a good game to be fair to him but imo he will be found out against better attacking teams

Very encouraging performance from the young guy, with his first Championship game I was very impressed, also remember that making the step up from Eastleigh to League 1 to Championship is massive for him, all we can do is get behind him, he is definitely one for the future, he just needs game time, by today's performance, i'd start him more. He would have kept a clean sheet aside from a harsh decision... but if Adkins wishes, let him out on loan for 6 months :)

Agreed. We need another CB for options but no reason to send him out to an L1 club. He's good enough to play an important role for us IMO.

Leeds are on their third choice strikers and had a pretty poor day at the office. And not sure they are "one of the best teams in the league". Seventh place last season, and on paper at least, weakened with Schmeichel gone and an early season injury crisis. Leeds, along with us and about 12 others are just one of those teams in the play offs shake up, and could finish anywhere between second and fifteenth.

So lets not get carried away. I can see why we seem to be chasing at least two potential experienced CBs.

Got a good future ahead but needs to go out on loan and get regular games. His actual defending was good but he was dodgy on the ball.

Send him where? First game of the season against a not so shabby Leeds squad & he played well, one slighty dodgy moment first half & a penalty that Leeds were going get off the ref if they threw themselves at the floor enough. On the flip side there was a moment in the second half where Jaidhi would have been skinned but Aaron kept with the Leeds player wiping out his options.

Nigel chose him in the first squad of the season so just trust his judgement, and stop all this loaning out and he needs more experience cobblers

I'll echo what most people have said. He looked pretty good, but with a few scary 'moments'. I think he has the potential to be better than Jaidi and Seaborne this season. He can iron out his faults with experience, but Jaidi will always be slow and Seaborne does not enspire me.

Did I imagine it or did he not nearly score with his head

Yep, headed it into the ground...and it bounced up over the bar. Great chance.

He did alright today, couple of dodgy moments on the deck but I honestly wasn't worried with him in the team. Think back to the likes Bennett and Makin as a CB partnership and then you realise how lucky we are now!

He's still young, still learning and it wasn't a ''massive'' test for him today, although I think he'll hold is own up against the big strikers of this league as he's terrific in the air.

It's a great story though, playing for a local team in Eastleigh and 18months or so later playing in front of sky cameras in the championship for Southampton. Shows all players in these little local teams that anything is possible.

We could all see Martin had a couple of nervous moments on the ball, for one moment the kids and I thought he'd lobbed Kelvin with one backpass. However anyone that says he didn't have a good game must have been watching a different one to me. Commanding in the air, made some good interceptions and tackles, one last ditch one in particular as mentioned by someone else, was superb. Great to see him giving orders a couple of times too.

I agree, let's not get carried away, but he deserves better than being farmed out to some league one outfit.

Looked reasonably assured today bar a couple of moments, one of which was caused by Harding. Very unlucky with pen which hit him on the chest, lino could not have seen it but still gave it. Did the right thing with his goal attempt header, always head down, but just got a bit too much over the ball. Clearly he is the main backup at the moment, will play reasonably often when Jaidi is injured (like today) or not able to play too frequently. Better than Seaborne. Clearly we need a new CB still though, but encouraging to have a decent young backup who will become good CB in the next year or so.

Decent defender. Dreadful footballer. Loan him out and get Gorkss in asap.

What a strange quote! You sound like the bloke stood next to me shouting for David Connelly to be sold because he's ****!!! The guy will get better with games... when's he had a decent run in the side?? NEVER! Give him a few games and watch him flourish! He wouldn't have been offered a contract extension if he wasn't good enough to play in this league! The guy used to play alongside Smalling of Man U..... That says a few things IMHO! He's better than a lot of people think!!! I seriously wonder about some of our fans sometimes! Get a grip!!

He can only get better. He did create a few nervous moments for me while watching but also made some good defensive clearances. Should maybe have scored the header from AL cross but was very unfortunate to have the penalty given for handball. I have to agree with St_Tel49 though, if we stick with him we will have a excellent centre back in our team..

To be honest he had a man of the match performance from my view, he looked miles better than Seaborn could ever do and defended where Jaidi would have been done for pace. He made the right decisions when called upon and communicated with the rest of the back line when needed too, a really mature performance from someone so young. Granted he made a few little mistakes and wasn't perfect but I could not have been more pleased with his performance for the start of the npc! It really cast doubt wether we actually need another CB, granted Leeds looked TERRIBLE going forward most of the time but when they did string it together Martin was there, which really made my day.

Hope he keeps starting and impressing more so like he impressed me last season in a similar position, but overlooked by Adkins on the training ground...

Wasn't worried at all when I saw him in the line up, for someone so young he has always looked very calm and composed. In the first half (as previously said) he did had a few nervy moments but he dramatically improved in the second half.

He saved us a goal with his last ditch block following up from Davis' save from Paynters one-on-one, and as someone else mentioned his pace on a few occasions shone through at times where it was obvious that Jaidi would have struggled.

Certainly a better prospect than Seaborne who's not a terrible player. Good to have options.

Oh, and he's great in the air. Will be a good player, don't send him out on loan, why would we do that? The best experience he can get is playing here with us.

Martin looked entirely the part at CB. If another is bought in, surely Martin still to be the main understudy because NA and AC have assessed their defenders and have him ahead of Dan Seaborne.

When the Lino gave the penalty I thought the Assistant must have seen Martin control the ball with his chest and arm but when you see it on TV you can see he chested it with his arms up out of the way as you naturally would. The Lino could not have seen a deliberate handball - which it has to be for a penalty - because there wasn't one. Obviously, officials make mistakes and are encouraged not to admit them, but he should be embarrassed this morning.

leeds are a decent team only missing becchio from there starting 11 there be around the playoffs still with that squad even tho gradel was a **** hes still a class player and even tho snograss didnt get a look in again hes quality as well, there one of very few midfielders in this league along with lallana chambo and cork who would walk in most teams in this leagues starting 11.

The idea of 'loaning out to get games' may not help him or other Saints players, we are building a particular squad ethos and we want people who are on the bus to stay on the bus and not be led a different direction somewhere else

I was less impressed. He did very well considering it was his debut but. Every opportunity he had he put the ball out of the play, whilst this is fine on some occasions... opposition managers for future games would identify this, put pressure on Martin and use set pieces against us.

Anyway, with timem like Seaborne could be a very competent CB

The nipper did very well put in a good shift one bad back pass all game really, great timing in the air and a crucial tackle to knock the ball away from Gradel and he nearly scored its now his place to lose, remeber Bridges debut away at Newcastle shocking ! stick by them and get behind them it breads confidence and he will be quality.
