Dean Hammond

I'm glad he recovered from the poo poo's he had the other day.

tbh I found it staggering how so many people had dropped him from their choice of teams, not just from the 11...but from the subs.

He'll play most of the season for us, baring injury.

Always says he is a key part to our team and will play whenever possible. Was superb towards the end of last season, and carried on that form yesterday. Cracking goal as well. It's good that we have so many options depending on the opposition in the middle of the park. Will be hard to leave 1 of the 4 CM's out of the 16.

I suspect that Hammond isn't the first name on the team sheet, and not necessarily even the first pick midfielder, but Adkins obviously rates him, just as he rates Schneiderlin, Cork and Chaplow. Like last season Adkins will pick the midfield to suit the opposition and rotate it regularly to keep the players fit and fresh.

Fair enough.

Hands up he did very well yesterday, if he continues like yesterday I would now say we have a quartet of central midfielders which gives me great hope.

Hammond played well yesterday in a team that collectively were well on top of their game. Leadership is not about looking good in a good performance. What he was criticised for by the current Saints first teamer, was going missing in a tough away match when he wasn't playing well, at a time when other players were letting their heads drop. That is the time real leadership comes into play. Yesterday he played well and scored a good goal, now he has set the standard he has to maintain it. If he can play well and lead and lift the team when we are playing badly he can be called a real leader. My view is that he isn't and when the going gets tough he will go missing.

Hammond looked as if he has benefited from a good pre season. lots of energy and combined well with cork. i reckon it was a tough decision on who to play in centre midfield but i suspect Leeds dirty tactics was a big factor. Morgan may of reacted badly to some of the tackles yesterday. thought chaplow looked good when he came on.

I am quite happy to hold my hands up about Hammond and say I was wrong. Games seemed to have passed him by in the last 2 seasons, and I always felt Cork and Morgan should be our starters. But fair play to the lad, he's proved me and a lot of others wrong because he bossed that game yesterday. And he scored a cracking goal too!

Looked very fit and strong yesterday, in fact, wow, one pre-season with Adkins and he has done so well, playing a game like we played yesterday, hassling and chasing the ball down really does drain you as a player, but we did it so well and kept it up for the whole game, rarely did you see a player struggling.

Mentioned a few times how fit, strong and up for it we looked.

But back to Hammond, I got it wrong, he had a great game yesterday. What a Midfield we have.

Neither does judging him on one poor away game, as you seem to have done.

My judgement of him is based on watching two seasons performances. Going overboard about one good performance doesn't make him the answer.

he had a good game today dont think hes our best midfielder but was strong at times today cracking goal to boot!

I'd agree with this post. He had a good game and a great finish (as all 3 goals were in differing ways). Classy team performance. Hammond does need to get more goals as he seems capable of (Peterborough). I believe the commentator mentioned that's his first goal at St Mary's in 1.5years/15 months, something like that. Not taking anything away from him cos he played well but I was surprised when Pardew spoke of Dean being an attacking midfielder as he doesn't strike me as attacking, although evidently not defensive either. Good game, good performace. Pleased to see Dean with a great touch at times which I am hoping remains as his touch in the past has let him down. Well done Deano - keep it up. I would agree Morgan and Cork are classier, higher quality players but it's horses fopr courses. Cork looked very assured so I'm over the moon as the pre season and coaching and management of Adkins and team. FINALLY a good start. Long way to go mind.

Thought Hammond was excellent yesterday but was really impressed with Chappers when he came on on the right.

This. I thought chapps was terrific when he came on, gave us a real edge. Surprised he didnt get booked though, even at three nil up he was flying in like a terrier on a rat.

All our CM's played well yesterday, Deano's goal was superb, and it's great to see such variety and quality in the squad in that area.

Deano will have poor games, as will Cork, Chappers and Morgan... the important thing to remember is that when this happens, not to get on their backs but support them back because we know they are all very good and capable players.

We are lucky to have them all.

Like many supporters I am so pleased to know that we have four very good midfield players to select from..

Let us hope they all stay on top of their game and give the Manager selection headache every week.

To be fair derry.....our Manager tends to agree with most Saints supporters in that Hammond is an integral part of the side and respected by his team mates....He will be in the side more often than not...let us hope the other midfielders Morgan and Chappers push Cork and Hammond all the way...

I thought he got caught in possession a few times on Saturday. Great goal though, so you tend to forget about the things he may have done wrong. Can't say I was terribly impressed by him or Cork on the day, but perhaps I have got used to our central midfielders totally dominating games. I have to remember that we've stepped up a league so just competing is desirable. Leeds also had the extra man when Howson dropped in, so considering that fact, perhaps Cork and Hammond did a very decent job after all. Great competition for places in there right now. Morgan looked good when he came on and Chaplow is perfect to bring in to add that extra bit of energy.
