Griffo Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 Did the De Ridder song get going at any point? I heard a few singing it at the back of block 39 and 40.
Sour Mash Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 Great win, finishing was clinical. Now... I watched the game on telly with the other 5k who stayed away, all you could hear was anti-pompey songs the whole game. I never realised how obsessed we are with them. Can we not sing about our own team anymore? You better get used to it - yesterday wasn't too muc different to any game we play, you're not going to change it and obviously a large number of those that sing are more than happy to let the world know what we think of the skates - particularly with the game being live on sky. What did p**s me off yesterday about our support, is when the final whistle was blown and the players turned around to applaud the support, there'd have seen the Saints sections half full, with people streaming out as quickly as possible, whereas the Leeds section pretty much packed full still showin their support to their side. Why not hang around to clap the lads off after a game like that?

Can we not sing about our own team anymore? Can we stop trotting this out all the time, as I've endlessly pointed out since I recorded the songs for use in FIFA11, we have around 80 different songs and only a fifth of them are about Skate Cheats FC. Go and rummage around in the Computer Games thread for proof, there's a full song listing.
channonball Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 The atmosphere was cracking yesterday apart from a ten minute spell at the end of the first half when the Leed fans were singing "we all love leeds". Everyone around me seemed to be loving the pompey bashing which was no different to any other game I've seen in the past. If you are at the game you can try and start the different chants yourself if you don't like it. If your not there and watching it on tv, tough luck. Don't try and put a dampener on a bloody good atmosphere and all round day out. Regarding the expat point - I totally agree your opinions regarding the football are valid if you are able to watch a good number of the games on tv/saintsplayer etc and see all the highlights and opinions. If your not in the stadium and able to feel the atmosphere its a bit rich whinging about what we are singing, how loud we are singing it etc.. Anyway who gives a s***, we won yesterday. Roll on Torquay.

We have around 80 different songs, mostly not Skate-bashers, yet all that could be heard on Sky yesterday was the same anti-Pompey song over and over and over again. Thats the problem. I don't have problem with anti-skate songs per se, have been singing them with everyone else since the late 60s, but we used to be so original with the songs that we came up with. But yesterday, unlike ever before that I can recall live or on the box, it was just this one cringeworthy song ad nauseum. I heard the occassional OWTSGMI, Father's Gun, Ricky Goal Machine etc. Come on guys, lets get back to the originality and humour that has always been Saints supporters. Anyway, made my point several times, will give it a rest now, still reflecting in a great win, and next time will watch with sound muted so I don't upset the little would-be hard nut darlings who think they are God's gift to football chanting. RedAndWhite91 Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 Of course, that nasty Mr Murdoch ordered the sound to be dubbed so the whole country thought the anti-Pompey songs were being sung all day. Stupid song, not stupid thread. I bet the fish-****ers would be laughing their faces off listening to a bunch of little hard boys singing "we're coming for you, you dirty skate bastards" over and over again. But then the irony is that skate bastards would not have been watching anyway, completely and utterly pointless chant. I can safely say, considering I was actually there, that we did not sing about P*mpey for 90 mins. Anyone that thinks we did, and furthermore says that it ruined their day, is a complete and utter tool. This is still a stupid thread, although it's good to see a few people speaking sense with regard to actually going to the game and having a valid opinion on the matter. Personally, I couldn't give a f(ck what we sing so long as the team are doing the business on the pitch and beating teams like Leeds 3-1.

Why not hang around to clap the lads off after a game like that? Was that not partly because people were trying to dive out to the north car park before the game finished and access was temporarily closed off? But yes, I completely agree - apart from anything else when you've paid that much money to see Saints play, why risk missing any of the action? The atmosphere was cracking yesterday apart from a ten minute spell at the end of the first half when the Leed fans were singing "we all love leeds". Everyone around me seemed to be loving the pompey bashing which was no different to any other game I've seen in the past. Don't try and put a dampener on a bloody good atmosphere and all round day out. Bloody hell, that "we all love Leeds" got boring quickly! Fair play to them for keeping it going though, our fans seemed pretty disinterested in trying to match it or drown them out which was a shame. However as you rightly say our support was fantastic other than that. My take on it is that we're finally back in the same league as Pompey, so of course there's going to be an initial excitement about it - the chants mentioned were contributed to particularly vociferously. I doubt the fact that the game was televised dampened that spirit. Personally I'd rather 90 minutes of raucous atmosphere exclusively consisting of anti-skate songs than a deathly silent St. Mary's. It really was only about a quarter of that amount of time anyway! Not to mention the fact that ours is a 'real' rivalry so isn't it OK to mention it? Most of the derby teams in this country sing about each other. To me it doesn't have the same tinpot feel as Bournemouth trying to get in on the act last season. saintjay77 Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 Watched on tv. We're coming for you did get sung a fair bit and seemed to stand out on tv. Thinking about it though I did here plenty of other songs. Can't say I remember hearing OWTS but would be surprised if it wasn't sung. Didn't we sing another version of we're coming for you aimed at the Leeds fans? Get out of our home or something? Watched the west ham game today and upton park sounded more like a car park and had hardly any atmosphere most of the match. Much preferred our support and singing. LostBoys Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 My favourite is 'Are you watching Pompey Scum' which I think started when we dicked Spurs in a televised cup game. I know it hit home because I was working in Pompey at the time

The Majestic Channon Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 Well I watched the game on TV, and the only chants that really came through were the anti-pompey ones. My Everton-supporting mate asked me why we have such an unhealthy obsession with them and I couldn't offer any kind of answer that didn't make me cringe. Oh ffs stop being such a big girl, its banter, all part of the game, drips like you would be happy with cringey love ins with our rivals.
dronskisaint Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 Anti Pompey is pro-Saints...it's only really us who sing them and they add to the atmosphere. Thought that the variety was fine yesterday...loved 'Are you watching Pompey Scum?', loved 'We are top of the league', loved all the player songs...what's not to like? And yes, I was there and yes, my throat hurts.
Thedelldays Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 Yes I have thanks. Look, I'm not deliberately trying to put a damper on an otherwise brilliant day - I'm just repeating what I witnessed and what happened. When fans of other clubs start questioning why our fans are more vocal in their dislike of our rivals than they are in support of our own team, you have to wonder why there is such an unhealthy obsession. Sorry if this offends anyone. thought you had enough of this fuking place..?
Dr Who? Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 Saints and Pomp*y hate each other, they as us sing anti songs, it is all part of the great rivaly that we have with each other. I think the main factors here are.... 1) It was our first game in the same league as them for 6 years. 2) It was on Sky 3) We were spanking Leeds all over the place and some of the nation were watching. 4) We are on a great run and have a great feel good factor. It will die down once we have beaten them again and normal service resumes. I love the rivaly and think it is a very important part of being a football fan!! hasper57saint Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 Listened to 606 on the way home and somewhere just North of Winchester on the A35 a Poopey called in and if he said 'They are a sleeping giant' once he said it ten times. He was almost incoherrant and we were a little non-plussed at his limited vocabulary. If he is an example of a Skate then perhaps we shouldn't go after them but just let them 'sleep' in silence
krissyboy31 Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 It was sang quite a bit during the game but definitely not the only song sang. That is an injustice to what was great atmosphere. Maybe half the time people thought they heard "we're coming for you" it was actually "he plays on the left?"

Macey_J2 Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 Tell me if i'm wrong, but the people moaning at the the amount of pompey chants are the types that (when they do come to a match) sit down and shut up the whole game, adding nothing to the atmosphere. I'd rather we had alot of noise than none. The withdean last season being the perfect example. It was embarrassingly quiet for long periods, even more so than our friendly matches last month. I think someone should rewatch the leeds match and do a tally of pro saints against anti pompey songs to give proof, rather than opinions as to the amount of songs. It was certainly a contributing factor to me joining in the muppetry of "Wash Your Mouth Out Son...", it's not as if none of them would be keeping an eye on us. I know I watched bits of a few of their early Championship games after relegation on the box because I wanted to see how cack they were.
Paul Chuckle Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 They are just as bad. At the Cricket yesterday they had a half time competition with 2 blokes on the pitch. The announcer introduced them and said they were from Southampton, then came the 'scummer scummer' chant from a few of their fans. The funny thing was they might have not even been Saints fans. Just occurred to me reading this from thornhill saints, I wonder where the microphones were mainly stationed? Maybe theyre at one end of the ground and thats why the fans at the game got a different perspective of the fans who saw it on telly. I was in kingsland corner, and yeh there were a fair few anti skate songs, (as is right and proper,) but there were plenty of player chants, and also plenty of "who the f*ck are leeds united", as well as "southerners" and loads of our other usual suspects, not to mention the Liebherr songs and the Cortese one. And to whoever suggested earlier that they hadnt heard OWTS, rest assured that it got sung regularly throughout the match.

svetigpung Posted 9 August, 2011 Share Posted 9 August, 2011 I was at the game today. I did think there was a lot of anti-Pompey chants. I don't mind them but would prefer we sang less about Pompey to be honest (especially when we're not playing them). Each to their own I suppose. Do the Skates sing about us as much as we do about them? At the dnd if the day though, I would rather than a sing/chanting crowd than a quiet one. Spot on Stoozer , exactly what i was about to say.
