Chez Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 the game yesterday...we couldnt really keep hold of the ball as Leeds pressured us well. Rose tinted specs off an all. We won so doesnt really matter. I thought the same. Players like Harding gave the ball away more than usual as they simply were not given the time they got in league 1. Even Fonte was hurried on occasions. I guess it is to be expected and we will need to up our game a little if we want to get in the play offs. vince Posted 7 August, 2011 Share Posted 7 August, 2011 Not picking on you because a few people say this. OK, yesterday he kicked what i would say was too many long balls. But he MUST be doing this with the managers knowledge, approval and/or instructions. Nigel can see this too, so he must be telling kelvin before the game what to do with the ball. You can criticise hin if he throws it to the opposition, but for long hoof-balls then surely he is just obeying orders. Fair enough to kick long, but kick long within 10 feet of your target, surely that's not beyond expectation of a Championship keeper?? More than once, Ricky and Connolly "paired up" for the kick and it went no where near them and they both let him know.
Under Weststand Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 Couldn't watch the game live so I recorded it. I was more than happy with the result lovely to get off to such a positive start. I sat & watched the game today & thought that we controlled the game for the greater majority of it. apart from 2 clear chances Leeds had they were prety inafective against our defence who all played well, Martin made a couple of mistakes, but got away with them, overall I thought he looked comfortable & looks a great prospect. Midfield was strong & effective Cork & Hammond looked reallly solid & Lallana was his usual class act, Connolly is class just hope we can keep him fit he will be awesome at this level. Not to sure if we were that good or Leeds were that bad, but great start Very encouraging.

He certainly did a good sidestep before putting the long ball forward for our second. Personally I think his save from Paynter was all important. had that gone in i think we would have got edgy as the spectre of Leeds 3-4 seasons ago
The Kraken Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 They seemed quite happy when it led to Lallana's goal... I'm pretty sure Vince isn't saying it never worked when we went long. In fact, Ricky seems to be back to his first-season level of sharpness, whereby he's almost unplayable in the air for the defenders, so when Davis got his kicking right it was a very productive method of attack. But Vince is right; particularly in the first half Davis' kicking out was fantastically wayward, on a few occasions it was at least 15 or 20 yards away from where he was aiming. connolly in particular was quite animated in his reaction to the poor distribution. It did get better as the game went on though, but Kelvin's first half kicking was poor.

I'm pretty happy with both our keepers at this level tbh and I fully agree with the rest of your post. The Kraken is right, I'm not saying it never worked, just that a few times in the game it was wide of the mark I'd expect him to hit. That said, I'll be a happy man at the end of the season if that's the only criticism I can level at him!!

Chap in the Chapel Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 A really encouraging start to the season, although tougher tests probably await this month at Ipswich and Leicester. Cork man of the match for me - at no stage did he look in anything other than complete control. I saw MLT yesterday and asked his view. He said Lallana for man of the match and thought we'd finish between 5th and 8th.
saint1977 Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 Excellent performance, very good from the rest and outstanding from Lallana, Fonte, Connolly, Cork and Hammond. Michael Brown was left hacking at shadows and subbed before he was red carded, good tantrum when subbed too. Leeds fans seemed to think Snodgrass is Carrow Road bound and certainly he looked a lot less interested than Max Gradel who in spite of his temper tantrums was their best player along with Howson. Chamberlain would have been concerned watching that, if De Ridder adapts quickly to this league then I'm honestly not sure Chamberlain is going to get in the first XI unless Lallana and/or De Ridder are injured. Martin did very well but still urgent need for a CB. Good gate and a good atmosphere, loved some of the songs. Combined with Hants T20 success yesterday it was the ideal weekend of sport! Hope the rumours about Jay Rodriguez, very highly rated by the Burnley fans I know and would really put this team firmly in the play off picture, not sure about another left back though, Harding is good enough. Sad news about Billy Sharp, some of the challenges in the highlights of that game, including Doncaster's Naylor (living up to his name) as well as Brighton's Dunk, were disgraceful. Whitey Grandad Posted 8 August, 2011 Share Posted 8 August, 2011 You're wrong. Simple as that. Wrong in that his kicking was not wayward on Saturday, or that Saturday was an exception in a long and distinguished career of pinpoint kicks to all corners of the field of play? (I was wrong once but it won't happen again)
