great game everyone bar guly in 1st half were awesome davis only had one maybe 2 decent save/s to make all leeds tryed to do was hack us down like they did in the 60s/70s scare teams with there aggression.

I don't agree that Guly was less good at all. he gave a clever dink to the left that wrong-footed Leeds and led directly to Hammond's goal at a crucial early moment in the game.

Brilliant game and result. Fonte, Cork, Hammond, Lallana and Connolly were all excellent today. Thought De Ridder did an OK job up top, but will be better at RW.

Davis - usual game...great stops but distribution at times shocking. Martin did look weak unfortunately and I was surprised he was picked to start. He'll learn from that I would hope, but we need a more dominating presence next to Fonte. Gorrks would do that.

Word of caution - first game of the season - lets not get too carried away. Plymouth beat us last season and ended up relegated. There's a very long way to go yet. However, a very encouraging performance and it feels great to be on the up again.

Wonderful start to the season.

Thought Leeds were dirty (esp Brown who should have been booked way earlier than he was) and despite quite a lot of possession never looked threatening.

Saints look organised and confident, Lallana was a joy to watch.

Once De Ridder has settled in & Oxo is fit we will have two wingers with awesome pace.

Martin is still very young, but if we don't sign a new CB then lets hope he learns fast.

Went to the game with a mate who was pretty wasted... both went into the toilets ...he went into cubicle...I came out and waited for a bit and he didnt come out so went upto to the stand ...he never came up and wasnt picking up his phone.

never saw him again and he woken up today cant remember what happened and has lost his season ticket (or had taken off him).

No but I saw someone fitting that description getting ganged from 3 well hung blokes in the toilets at about the time you mention

Good performance by the whole team. Particularly impressed by the structure and composure of the team when faced with some dubious behaviour by Leeds. We looked organised and in control. Everyone is talking about the fitter, leaner Lambert(who undoubtedly is) but I thought Hammond was too and both he and Cork were excellent in the middle. Schneiderlin oozed class when he came on and it is a lovely predicament for Adkins having to choose 2 from those 3.

Right-wing is not Guly's best position but he worked hard.

I think we still need a quality striker and cb to challenge for a top spot but it would be incredibly harsh to leave anyone out of the team after that performance. Would Shane Long really be happy to be playing 2nd fiddle to both Connolly and Lambert? LOL.

In fact he might have trouble getting on the bench!

5 subs is ridiculous in this day and age, opportunities for youngsters at many clubs will simply disappear. A very short-sighted decision by the football league.

We have talked about strengthening yet this very competent starting line up containing only one new face, Jack Cork. In my opinion he did have added value.

The side looked together and ready for the start of the season. Great testament to Adkins and the coaching staff.

As others have said, Leeds played dirty early on and the referee was a bit soft on them but otherwise had a good game. It was the linesman who flagged for the penalty and I was convinced it was until I saw the incident on BBC later. Very dubious.

Davis did all required of him. Richardson was strong at the back but his distribution let him down again. Harding had an ok game. Martin is a bit green and no doubt in my mind he was told to do the simple things like clearing the line and not relying on playing pretty. He will gain from this experience but that position could be our weak link. Fonte had a great game.

Guly was out of position and drifted in too much reducing the outlet opportunities but had a decent game. Jack Cork had a great game and looked a good addition to the midfield. Lallana started quiet and then exploded into the game. Hammond had one of his most influential games for Saints.

Lambert had a decent game. Connolly is real class and just wins my man of the match.

Chaplow, when he came on was his usual busy, aggressive, mistackling self and will be ideal for waking up midfield when they need it. Not a starter though, for me.

De Ridder showed the skills he has and when he gets used to Championship Football in England he will be a real threat. I an now no longer concerned if Chamberlain goes although I would prefer he stays as it gives us more options. I would start De Ridder on the right as soon as he has bedded in

Schneiderlin looked his usual comfortable self on the ball.

Great classy win.

Great win, although Leeds were shocking. Their defence was all over the place, their tackling was a horrorshow, and they just lumped it up the pitch instead of using the 2 very good wingers that they had on!

Very happy with the result though, and it shows good promise. I thought Martin was very good, although I think he needs to play at RCB rather than LCB, he didn't look comfortable having to use his left foot.

My MOTM - Frazer Richardson. He put in some thumping tackles and kept Gradel quiet for long periods. His best game in a Saints shirt by far, even if nobody realises it!

Kisnorbo has anger issues and is probably one of the worst defenders in the league.

strange as I thought he had a decent game for them. He's much smaller than I thought, but he won a lot in the air.

I agree with that. Gradel looked very good, but Richardson didn't let him get away once. That extra pace and height makes him first choice ahead of Butterfield for me.

Excellent performance and a great way to start the season. Only points would be, not a huge fan of Guly in general and particularly not out wide right. Also, that is clearly a Leeds side going through some problems at the moment, could tell by the reactions of players and fans. We'll have much tougher tests over the season.

I watched the game at 2am after getting in from work. I was really impressed with how we played, particularly our organisation when Leeds had the ball and we pressed them very well. Cork was superb and was my MoM, with special mentions to Lallana, Hammond and Richardson. I thought Martin did OK, he clearly has the ability but I felt as though he needed to back himself more. He was slightly nervous which was understandable I guess, but it will be interesting to see how he develops over the season.

Only a couple of negatives: Kelvin made a cracking save from Paynter, but his distribution was appalling yesterday. The worst I've seen it for a long time. I'm sure he'll sort it out though. I was slightly disappointed on occassion with how easily gave the ball away as we tried to pass our way out of tricky situations, and I think NA highlighted this in his post-match.

Overall a great win and a great start to the season. The momentum is still with us!

I agree with that - Ricky and Connolly were going mental at him a couple of times when they lined up together (Rickie to win the first ball, Connolly to pick up the scraps) and Kelvin just couldn't pick them out.

Great start, happy to see Connolly start and get a goal, having gone E/W at 175/1 on him being top scorer! :^)

The front cover had a picture of Cortese on it. It is available in advance online so the usual weirdos got all excited about it on here a couple of days ago.

Crab was taking the mickey out of those weirdos.

Is there a buy one get two free offer at Anger Management School? he should take Gradel and Brown along too. Muppets all three of them.

Well done Saints, great to beat a dirty side with good football.

WTF was up with Lonergan too? Ran over like

a d.ck and got himself booked when Fonte landed awkwardly on his neck/head.

Well Leeds weren't any better than when we played them in L1. I think they realised they were up against better players and resorted to the only tactic they know, kick lumps out of them. Thankfully it never really worked.

Good all-round performance. Couldn't find many faults, but we will need to improve against far better teams than Leeds, so Davies must improve his distribution, the midfield must be careful where they give the ball away, and Martin needs to be a bit more decisive.

Other than the above, pretty damn good and great to nail any opening day / Sky jinxes...

it's a toss up do you want a better defender (Richardson) or someone who can actually pass a ball to a team mate (Butterfield)

Good win - poor performance I felt though when trying to play football. Couldnt keep hold of the ball for more than 5 passes. Great goals and shows how great we are going forward. Defended well and Martin was very unlucky with the Penalty.

New left back is needed for sure.

I know we expect it by now but have to say that Fonte was superb again. Can hardly recall him ever having a bad game for us.

Harding as well put in another very consistent performance, Snodgrass was anonymous and part of that was Harding's work.

Apparently we need a new left back though.

Just watched the highlights.

1st and third goals were even better than I thought. Connolly and Lallana are top, top, players at this level. Also, for those who say Guly can't play wing, watch the highlights again - he might not be a spectacular winger in the sense of skinning players but he does create openings.

Only one legitimate penalty shout in the match and that was ours, when Chaplow got taken out having just hit the post.

Sums it up for me Ron. I thought Leeds tried to bully us but surprisingly had forgotten that league one was a lot more physical, I'm not sure we even noticed it, as it was the physical battle that we had to win in the first hour in every game last season.

You not confident he will do well then? Bit pessimistic of you.

And fingers crossed plenty of opportunities to congratulate him and the squad.

Did you read my post on this thread.

Thought not.

Should be more votes for Connolly, his hold up play was fantastic, he reads the game so well. He is Premier League class.

It was a tough call with only one vote allowed. I reckon if we could vote multiples we would get a better indication of our MOM

A bit of an unanimous opinion it seems, Dave. As a team performance I was impressed. Martin had premier (not league) nerves, he seemed more sure of himself in the glimpses in L1. It's a sign that NA started him rather than Seaborn, unless he is injured as well. At this time we probably need to find out whether he is one for the future or not.

LM is not Guly's position, although he did OK. He needs to be much more involved in the middle of the park, but for as long as we are pursuing the 4-4-2 it's a bit of a difficulty for NA, especially with Connolly's current form.

I was longing for Lambert to score, it would have gotten him off on the right foot.

Nevertheless, it was great to go home with a win against Leeds. More to come

Could not agree more. Lallana gets headlines for the goal but tbh it was one of his quieter performances. By contrast Richardson was up and down more than a whore's drawers and played an exceptional game at right back.

Not picking on you because a few people say this. OK, yesterday he kicked what i would say was too many long balls. But he MUST be doing this with the managers knowledge, approval and/or instructions. Nigel can see this too, so he must be telling kelvin before the game what to do with the ball. You can criticise hin if he throws it to the opposition, but for long hoof-balls then surely he is just obeying orders.
