SaintBobby Posted 6 August, 2011 Share Posted 6 August, 2011 Really good performance. Very gritty and strong. If I had to find a negative, it would a be lack of pace and occasional lack of creativity. The second of these sounds mad though when you look at our three goals. All of which were exquisite. MOTM: Lallana with a very honourable mention to Hammond.

K,Billy's supersound Posted 6 August, 2011 Share Posted 6 August, 2011 Great result well done saints. good goals third was the best.good defending of all the leeds corners and midfeild wasn't bullied, we owned the middle of the park first half. for me we were far to sloppy at at times and i believe we played at about 70% what we can. imo apart from the goal in second half and chaplow's shot hitting the post for me our performance dropped below what we can and should be acheiveing. lambert and connolly didn't link up well together, guly didnt do much atall one run setting up lallana apart from that was crap imo he can play wide midfeild. hammond, lallana (great goals) cork and chaplow all played really well and worked hard they won us the game. martin was alittle shaky at times but remember its his first ever game at this level and not long as a pro for me did ok. frazer and harding coped well with the leeds wide men and were really beaten. fonte was a rock. davis is one of the best keepers in this league no doubt. hope we sign a cb and a pacy striker thats all. SaintBobby Posted 6 August, 2011 Share Posted 6 August, 2011 According to the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_div_1/14351913.stm we only had 49% possesion. Felt like a lot more than that to me. I wish they'd measure "territory" rather than possesion. A ball going out for a goal kick and a pause in play presumably gives nearly a minute of possession to the defensive team?

Leslie Charteris Posted 6 August, 2011 Share Posted 6 August, 2011 Great game, great goals - but, BBC, why do we have to wait until gone midnight to see them again? Cracking performance all round, with no serious weaknesses. I always thought we would win, but Leeds were worse than I expected. We will face better teams - I think the Ipswich game will be a better measure of where we are, but on that performance, there is no team in this league we need fear. Nexstar Posted 6 August, 2011 Share Posted 6 August, 2011 Cracking performance from the lads today and Leeds looked very average. We played some brilliant football, especially down the wings and yet, none of the goals came directly from crosses. Aaron Martin looked a bit shaky first half, but in the last 45 he was really good, making 3 crucial tackles within 10 minutes of coming back out. Harding seemed to play us needlessly into danger 2 or 3 times. I'm going to say it was a peno, due to the fact I won money from it! At the end of the day, his hand shouldn't have been up so high. Enjoying how much everybody is talking about us once again. Fantastic performance all round, roll on Barnsley!

St_Tel49 Posted 6 August, 2011 Share Posted 6 August, 2011 Great Great win as much as i like Martin i think he was the only weak link today, perhaps just need someone with abit more experience along side Fonte. I thought that Martin showed both his ability and his inexperience today. Give the lad a chance. I thought the team performance was impressive as much for the defensive display as for the goals. We defended right through the team and took the pressure off the back four. Perhaps those stats on the other thread do tell us something. That would have been a clean sheet had it not been for the dodgy penalty.
Roger Posted 6 August, 2011 Share Posted 6 August, 2011 Absolutely chuffed. Thought we were superb tbh. I was apprehensive going to the game as wanted morgan to play and jaidi. However, hammond was great. Morgan played 24 minutes anyway and adkins said after he will see lots of game time this season and he is class. Jaidi was injured. We need another centre back, martin tried hard and did well but we need better imo. Reckon the manager is class. What hes best at is tactics and getting the players properly prepared befor and after matches with his lastest recovery techniques. Look at connolly we thought he was finished hes hardly been injured since adkins came and jaidi was finished and then played nearly every game last season. Chuffed. Burnsie Posted 6 August, 2011 Share Posted 6 August, 2011 Smashing display. A Leeds mate has texted me to say we were well worth the win. Lallana was my man of the match, but Hammond very impressive too - he and Cork completely dominated the central area. Back four was comfortable, although in truth Leeds were very poor in the attacking third. Fonte a class act as usual, and I was impressed by Martin, and also by Frazer Richardson, who looked rock solid.
yorkie Posted 6 August, 2011 Share Posted 6 August, 2011 Didn't really know what to expect and went in with an open mind but that is why i love football & Saints. What a great game. I think Richardson did an excellent job which may go unnoticed but he dealt with their left winger (Gradel?) very well. Our midfield is the best i've seen for years, with players surrounding leeds in packs and hassling them, eventually winning the ball. We have fight, skill and when oxo gets back, pace..the one thing i thought we were missing today. Oh and the 5 on the bench thing is ****ing ********. What happens when Oxo and Barnard get back? It makes our squad look to big. Cant wait for the next game. WIFM Are you Mark Goddard ex-Bellemoor circa 1970's?
The Kraken Posted 6 August, 2011 Share Posted 6 August, 2011 OK, seems like no-one has done it yet. Here's some player ratings from my visit to St. Mary's: Davies: 6. One excellent one on one save that kept us in the lead, but his distribution (mostly in the first half) was really poor. Got better second half though. Richardson: 6. Solid enough, didn't offer too much going forwards but looked fairly solid at the back. I'm still not convinced about him as a player, but didn't do much wrong today. Harding: 7. Had one poor moment early on where, from a Leeds free kick, he was caught the wrong side of his man which led to a decent shot on goal. But linked well with Lallana and looked pretty comfortable otherwise. Fonte: 8. Pure quality, still a cut above even at this level, great player. Martin: 6. In the air, fantastically dominant, Leeds didn't get a look in and didn't look like wanting to either. On the ground, looks vulverable at times, and I'm not sure if he's the permanent answer for a partner for Fonte. I was in the Chapel, so a fair distance away, but it looked like a pen to me. Lallana: 9. Brilliant. Just brilliant. Can't wait to see how good he is going to be this year, he really is such a talent. Hammond: 8. Great goal, and a really dominant performance. I'm not his biggest fan but he showed today that he's more than capable of leading of good side at this level. Cork: 7. Did the simple things very, very well. Didn't really stand out in a huge way, but that was testimony to how he went about his job in such a very tidy and efficient way. Guly: 6. Flashes of what he can do, but I still very much believe right-wing is not his position. Won't see the best of him unless he's played in "the hole", which seems his natural position. Just a shame we won't do that very often. Lambert: 8. No goal scoring opportunities but his link up play was superb. Not only wins almost every header, but knows where his lay-offs are going too. A great option to have up front. Connolly: 7. I thought he was quiet all game, then started and finished the best goal of the game, and what a calm and composed finish. Worked well. Subs: Chaplow: 7.5. Bags of energy and did exactly the job that was required of him. De Ridder: 6. Flashes of what he can do but some things didn't quite come off. Schneiderlin: 6. Did what he needed to in the short time he was on the pitch.

CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 6 August, 2011 Share Posted 6 August, 2011 Good win which I feel is more the product of a splendid team effort rather than any particularly outstanding individual performance. I must say I thought Leeds looked unusually toothless for a club of their standing - as for the reason for that you can take your pick from us making them look below average, or them missing important players. Despite the very healthy scoreline I don't think creatively we really got out of second gear - there may well be more to come from this squad. It has to be said however that (At this stage of his career) Arron Martin just doesn't look like a Championship standard defender - a observation so obvious I'm sure everyone present at St Marys today should have seen it. PS - I've just checked the record books and this is the first time SFC have won the opening game of the season since the Black Prince's famous '3 pointer' at the Battle of Crecy in August 1346 - everything comes to those who wait they say ....... scotty Posted 6 August, 2011 Share Posted 6 August, 2011 Good match, great result, and the first game/sky hoodoo banished. Plus points- excellent containment when we were off the ball, and good use of it when we had it. Connolly was terrific when he actually received passes, De Ridder looked sharp and useful in the time he had on the pitch, looking forward to seeing him when he settles in a bit, and we looked generally capable and organised. Chappers good when he came on, added a bit more bite to the midfield. The usual suspects (rickie, AL, jose baby etc,) up to par. Was a bit concerned by that cruncher that laid Fonte out for a moment tho. Negatives- Guly looked a bit out of position to me. He seems to be more effective in a more central area. Martin seemed slightly out of his depth, but as has already been mentioned its his first game at this level. Thought he was unlucky for the pen, looked like a chest down to me. Connolly was definitely getting frustrated at the quality of supply he got, threw his hands up four or five times that I saw (from kingsland corner.) Overall, very good day at the office. CanadaSaint Posted 6 August, 2011 Share Posted 6 August, 2011 Hammond was a vital player today - not just for his goal and his all-round offensive and defensive play but (and perhaps most importantly) for the leadership he showed. That leadership area has been a bit of a void for us but I think we're finally seeing it - and the captain figure we thought we'd bought two years ago. His play allowed a lot of others to blossom. corsacar saint Posted 6 August, 2011 Share Posted 6 August, 2011 Going forward on this performance we will score plenty,we might need too,as defensively we can at times look shaky. 3 superb goals and desperately unlucky when Chaplow smashed a shot against the post late on with Lonergan well beaten. I thought the new leaner Rickie, was superb, and what does the guy have to do to win a free kick.[Having said that I thought the referee had an excellent game overall]. Great we have finally won a game at home,at the first time of asking. Well pleased well done Saints.
