And...(echos the big bid rumour)

@Fourth_official Leicester City are also concerned Southampton may rock the boat on a few of the deals they are lining up as they look to spend big #Saints

Coupled with FA46's tweet it does seem like we are trying to make a move for Maynard, since it would appear that he has been their top target this summer. Are Leicester rumoured to be in for any other big signings?

Shane Long, sven has been quoted as saying he's interested in him.

I wouldn't be happy if we signed Long at all - strikes me as incredibly overrated

He scored 28 goals last season. He's got a big future and all the attributes needed to be a success at a higher level and will undoubtedly play in the Premier League for many years, especially if you look at his performances last season.

You'd be the only one who wasn't happy if we did sign him.

TBF, all of those that are slating the Big Bald Si, have you seen him play ??

I am actually having a text convo now with my Reading STH mate who agrees with me that he is very over rated, has only really had one decent season and before last year was roundly slagged off by the majdeski faithful.

Still, if he keeps the weight off and the form up would be good.

Would much prefer Maynard.

This. I live in Reading, and go to the odd game here and there. Not once have I been particularly impressed by Long. Yes, he scored goals last season, but Reading don't have an awful lot up front and he's the best of a bad bunch. I expect a lot of posters on here haven't seen him play as much as I have, and have instead decided to look up how many goals he scored last season and from that very statistic, decide he's a good player.

It was much like David McGoldrick when he was here in the season we got relegated. I thought he was overrated too - ended up our top scorer that season, primarily due to our lack of decent strikers. He missed far, far more than he scored, seemed completely inept to pick out a simple pass when presented with the opportunity, and I was over the moon when someone actually paid £1 million for him (especially so given we were in administration).

You should check out the Reading forum - I imagine any comment on Long will be either divided, or negative. Most of my mates are Reading fans and would be over the moon with £7 million for him.

He has carried injuries but when playing is pretty consistant, Long however has only had one decent season. This year he has been a bit of an enigma, I promise you the talk of the Reading STH's is that they would love to cash in on this season but only if they can spend his fee on a more consistant striker.

The seasons before, I think we can all agree he has been pretty much under the radar, and seeing him at St Marys and the couple of games I have watched when seeing my mate in Reading he has not impressed me TBH.

That said, if he keeps the form of last year he will be good.

Just saying don't dismiss Si's opinion as it is one shared by many people that watch him play regularly.

In fact - another brilliant example was when Reading signed Rasiak. All my Reading supporting mates were winding me up as to how they'd snapped up our best striker. How I laughed when I told them they'd be mortified within a few games as to just what they had signed..... :p

Lol I remember.

My mate was waxing lyrical at the start, I told him how much of a lazy b*stard he was and was proved right after a matter of weeks lol.

Not seen much of Waghorn - he doesn't strike me as prolific though. Exciting times nonetheless, am just hoping there is no smoke without fire!

He was terrific when Leicester initially had him on loan. A real nippy striker who got almost 15 goals IIRC.

they spent 3m big ones on him, but he didn't really light up the league the next season (mainly due to Sven arriving and players like Yakubu pushing him out)

Fixed it for you.

I'd be interested to see why you'd say that. He is decent, but not amazing.

As a complete aside I bloody hate it when people put words in my mouth - if you have an opinion then voice it but don't be so arrogant to assume you know what other people are thinking. That's you SamKimish - it's patronising.

Secondly Shane Long may not be all that anyway. There have been plenty of flash in the pan strikers with one decent season behind them - remember Todorov or Aliadiare? Long may turn out to be great or not, same as Maynard and no one knows. FWIW from what I've seen I'd prefer Maynard but it's probably all rubbish anyway. My guess is that we'll sign Waghorn and he'll turn out to be this season's Shane Long.

No thanks to Waghorn - gives it his all and plays the high-intensity football favoured by NA - for a big lad, has decent pace even if he's not the quickest out of the blocks. But hasn't got the greatest footballing brain and is another player who likes to drop deep. We need someone who can genuinely lead the line...

Can't believe anyone rated McGoldrick. There seems to be a strange effect when a player is that awful. Either some fans feel sorry for the player, or just want to be different, so they find something to praise.

But he was one of the worst I've seen. It was like having Forecast playing every week. Besides the awful attitude, not playing where he was told to, lack of effort and complete inability to cleanly strike a football...he missed a huge number of chances. What was it, 15 or 16 goals, in about 50 games, whilst being the lone striker and penalty taker. It's still a stat that makes him seem far far far better than he was. But thats stats for you.

This is my point re: Long. To assess whether someone's a quality player or not, you need a lot more than just statistics. A couple of Forest fans I know seemed quite pleased with the McGoldrick signing, but having watched him for 30 odd games that season, my opinion differed markedly.

Shane Long is not worth anywhere near £7 million, imo.

Shane Long

Season - - - - Games - - - goals

06/07 - - - - 22 - - - - 2

07/08 - - - - 29 - - - - 3

08/09 - - - - 39 - - - - 9

09/10 - - - - 31 - - - - 6

10/11 - - - - 45 - - - - 23

Theres the MLG stats boys, without all his hype we would all be talking about a flash in the pan, but due to the media frenzy he is the next superstar. And all that from a team that created chances, flirted with playoffs and has never been blessed with strikers.

He could well become a very accomplished player, and may be worth a gamble but IMHO 7 mil is a gamble too much.
