Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 5 August, 2011 Share Posted 5 August, 2011 Is still available on a free transfer. FFS!
Big_Bald_Si Posted 5 August, 2011 Share Posted 5 August, 2011 Is still available on a free transfer. FFS! Along with a whole host of decent players. Upson, Hitzlespurger, JLloyd Samuel but to name a few. Huge wages demands and the "25 man squad" rule have stopped many players getting a club. Super_Uwe Posted 5 August, 2011 Share Posted 5 August, 2011 I think the only reason there might be some reluctance to take him on is his recent injury record. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/b/birmingham_city/9010764.stm You have to wonder exactly how well his knee has healed; modern footballers are of course more likely to recover from serious knee injuries than they would have done 30/40 years ago, but you never know. Seems a shame from Birmingham's perspective that they couldn't agree on a deal to keep him. Would love to see him join us if we could settle on a decent deal. This Charming Man Posted 5 August, 2011 Share Posted 5 August, 2011 There will be some bargains to be had once those players realise clubs aren't going to pay their daft wage demands and lower their demands.
FalkirkSaint Posted 5 August, 2011 Share Posted 5 August, 2011 James McFadden would be a fantastic signing! Always terrific for Scotland
DaveyR Posted 5 August, 2011 Share Posted 5 August, 2011 Worth a punt if he'd drop to the Championship and lower his wage demands
Big_Bald_Si Posted 5 August, 2011 Share Posted 5 August, 2011 That BBC article states that fewer than 25% of players whose contract expired in the summer have found themselves a new club - quite a strartling statistic really. Could this be the start of a revolution in player wages?
saint lard Posted 5 August, 2011 Share Posted 5 August, 2011 (edited) As the closure of the transfer window draws nearer we will bid oncemore for Maynard. The club will accept the offer and Maynard will agree terms. This is not beyond the realms of possibility, imo. Edited 5 August, 2011 by saint lard
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 5 August, 2011 Share Posted 5 August, 2011 That BBC article states that fewer than 25% of players whose contract expired in the summer have found themselves a new club - quite a strartling statistic really. Could this be the start of a revolution in player wages? Or even players behaviour. Maybe a contract will start to mean more to them - as it did, say, 20-30 years ago - as the luxury of allowing your contract to run down safe in the knowledge there will be a bunfight amongst clubs, offering ridiculous signing on fees and salaries, starts to become less attractive when they see more and more (supposedly) decent players not finding new clubs or having to take large wage cuts as the situation hasn't panned out as expected. Good, if it does, quite frankly.

jjsaint Posted 5 August, 2011 Share Posted 5 August, 2011 My opinion (please forgive if it's stating the bleeding obvious): There is a lot of talent out there. Clubs are looking globally, the talent pool is widening, players whose level may once have guaranteed a Premiership club with silly wages are now looking more like Championship level with (usually) sensible wages. Plus I think boardrooms are finally realising that an excessive wage bill can threaten to destroy a club, especially in the 'current economic climate'. Dellman Posted 5 August, 2011 Share Posted 5 August, 2011 Yes, all sounds sensible and hopeful until foreign launderers invade the Championship too, led by the Thai magnate, Erikson and Leicester

This Charming Man Posted 5 August, 2011 Share Posted 5 August, 2011 The one that would really be a state of ambition IMO would be Matthew Upson Imagine no-one will touch him unless they get him on a pay as you play deal. Surprised QPR aren't snapping all those players up. Seeing as they're determined to tackle the Premiership with a £1m budget.

Big_Bald_Si Posted 5 August, 2011 Share Posted 5 August, 2011 They'll probably go up to cover void periods. The clubs hold the cards - there's now limited demand for players due to the capping of squads, thus players will have to make themselves more attractive to prospective employers. I'd be taking a wage cut if there were limited jobs in my profession......
