supersonic Posted 4 August, 2011 Share Posted 4 August, 2011 I was having a discussion with an interbred skate at work and neither of us know the true reason why Saints and poopey have such a fierce rivalry. Does anyone know the real reason? I have ready several contradicting stories about water ways (which I don't understand) and a strike in portsmouth dockyard in which dockers were taken from Southampton to help out. Also, any links or information would be very useful as I start my final year of university in september and my FYP is based on football hooliganism and rivalries. Thanks in advance

pap Posted 4 August, 2011 Share Posted 4 August, 2011 I don't hate Pompey. I enjoy it when we beat them because they are our local rivals. Yes, some of their fans are nobs. So are some of ours. They laughed at us when we were in admin. We have an 827 page thread devoted to their ups and downs in the transfer market. Most people from Portsmouth I've actually met have been alright. Sure, they say some wicked things about our football team, and we say some nasty things about theirs. It's more a case of barb-wire banter than hatred for me. lumuah Posted 4 August, 2011 Share Posted 4 August, 2011 I never used to hate them... or Bournemouth for that matter - I always thought of myself as a south coast fan (but Saints were, and always will be 'my team') Now I can't stand Portsmouth for a few reasons - 1. Because they hate us. 2. TCWTB. 3. Robbin' cheating, charity stealing scum, 4. Because I work there (city, not the club!) As for Bournemouth, considering the amount of friendlies we played to help them out, and players loaned over the years, they conveniently forget all that and just want to be Pompey's little brother. Therefore, they now qualify for my distaste.
rallyboy Posted 4 August, 2011 Share Posted 4 August, 2011 there was no strike, an urban myth to be filed alongside the other 100 - Cortese is trying to sell the club, we don't own the ground, we are bankrupt, our owner was a tank driver, all that sort of rubbish that is paraded as fact in sh*tty Portsea pubs by cross-eyed, sister-fiddlers. Personally I was pretty indifferent until they came to our place and abused Ted Bates. That's when it changed for me. The acceptable face of rivalry was replaced by an underclass who couldn't even respect the dead. Their shallow apologies for that and everything since has just made it worse. Though it's different if you live in Soton and never see them, those of us who live on the front line have no choice but to dislike them. Two days until we have the chance to restore the natural order - for a generation or three. (normal generation, not a pompey 12 year one)

scotty Posted 4 August, 2011 Share Posted 4 August, 2011 I have to say that I do genuinely hate them. Not just the "football" club, but the place in general. Dockers in Portsmouth were told by the unions not to handle "Blackleg" work (work which was carried out by Southampton (and other areas) employees). So whatever they think in Skatesville, they are wrong.
70's Mike Posted 4 August, 2011 Share Posted 4 August, 2011 My old man and his brothers were of a generation where saints fans used to go to the Dell and Fratton Park. All this hatred is a relatively new phenomenon. basically agree, really it grew during the late 60's and early 70's and mirrored the rise of football hooliganism. what added the spice was the number of events where the two cities were in opposition, even in youth football, Wimpson vs Hillside(Paulsgrove). they used to come to the Fair on the Common, we used to go to Southsea and some of the grotty nightclubs opposite the pier in Southsea. The other major factor was the clubs have not been in the same division that often, so games were special ocassions
rpb Posted 4 August, 2011 Share Posted 4 August, 2011 My old man and his brothers were of a generation where saints fans used to go to the Dell and Fratton Park. All this hatred is a relatively new phenomenon. This is true - in the 50s we were were two divisions below them and they were seen as representing the South Coast in the top division, I believe that they even brought the FA Cup (or League Trophy) to the Dell to parade it during half time and were well received. I was at the game in 1960 when we finally overtook them (5 - 1 I think) and we were surprised as much as delighted. Supersonic - check out Mike Channon's book 'Man on the Run', there's a good chapter there about the rivalry and how the hatred was very one-sided when he played for them and how it was born out of how poorly they took the reversal of fortunes. Since then, however, the atmosphere has changed a bit...
Dellman Posted 4 August, 2011 Share Posted 4 August, 2011 It isn't new, tho' its got a lot more intense because of 'Arry and our relegation and their promotion and corruption and all that misery but I used to go by train to Fratton to see most Pompey home matches always to cheer the away side and I had to wait two years before anyone beat them (it was Wolves), I'm talking about the first years after the war when they won the first division title. It was horrible. But isn't the original rivalry all to do with who rules the waves? Pompey was the naval base (Nelson and Victory and all that) and then we came along with the Cunard liners, the Queens and Pompey no longer ruled the waves and we were called 'The Gateway to the Empire'. How's that for a theory?
dronskisaint Posted 4 August, 2011 Share Posted 4 August, 2011 I have a hatred for all things Pompey that's, in it's own way, as irrational as my love for Saints. I can't apply logic to love and hate...certainly the revilement that I and many others feel over the way that they have acted over the last few years have honed that feeling and possibly I've tried to rationalise feeling the way I do to justify it but really it's just a by product of my influences over the years...the people, places, teams that have been a part of my utterly irrational love for Saints have also contributed to my hate for the skates. It's the way it is...try the love/hate theory in your thesis...it won't take many words :-)

JackanorySFC Posted 4 August, 2011 Share Posted 4 August, 2011 I was always brought up to hate them. Whenever my school (Wildern) played a skate school loons that didn't even like football that were expelled/ suspended would come down and watch just to kick off - brilliant stuff! I'd expect the same for any cup game we played down there. Anyone that doesn't live here (like those above from Oxford and Cumbria) are more than welcome to say you don't gate them as it's a city thing (bar some exceptional "expats" with strong ties to the city), ffs my old man refused to give me £5 spending money for a school trip to HMS Victory as he "wouldn't support their economy", he took me up the dell that night for a rumbelows cup game again Sheffield weds that I think we won 2-0. Oh, and anyone that has been to their pit ever for a derby match and has come back saying "hates a strong word, their ok really" is not welcome again in December! Dalek2003 Posted 4 August, 2011 Share Posted 4 August, 2011 Well, they had a few years of glory inn the 1930's and 40's and they have dined out on this ever since. Despite the fact that they have been in the wilderness for years while we were in the top league they could not admit to be the second or third club on the south coast. Clash City Saint Posted 4 August, 2011 Share Posted 4 August, 2011 I was talking to an old school Chelski fan last night who recalled something that I had heard from mates who were there. Back in Germany during Euro '88 he said that all fans of all clubs got on with each other except us / 'them' and NUFC/AFCS. He said both wouldn't even stand near each other on the terraces which he was amazed at and I know from my mates quite a few 'scuffles' occurred. He also recalled meeting a 'great bunch of Saints lads' who had got 'Ugly Inside' and our crest tattooed on their ass cheeks whilst there and had mooned for a photo for him. Anyone know of these lads?
Golden Balls Posted 4 August, 2011 Share Posted 4 August, 2011 They never really registered on my radar until we played them in the league cup and they booed the Ted Bates minutes silence. I didn't like them before that, but that was because I wan't supposed to because I'm a Saints fan. I always viewed it as a small vlub we took the **** out of. Now I hate them. hasper57saint Posted 4 August, 2011 Share Posted 4 August, 2011 I wrote my Oxford Thesis (unpublished) on the 'Dockers Strike in Southampton in 1889' There was no 'rivalry' then as Southampton was 'Merchant Marine' and P..py 'Military'. In the '50's Blacklegs from P..py took on work the Southampton Dockers had 'Blacked'.The animosity started around that time and culminated in the abuse of Ted Bates at the Dell. I don't hate them. I just don't bother wasting any time on them the inbred ........ !!

yorkie Posted 4 August, 2011 Share Posted 4 August, 2011 I think the rivalry only really started for my generation (50 something) when we were relegated in 1974 and the first derby at The Dell which Sainrs won4-0. it came from a generation where your school, town, city was "harder" than theirs. Very tribal and very basic. I used to go to Pompey everyday and met a lot of nice people. Even football fans that one on one were perfectly normal. It's the whole culture of the 70's & 80's. They had some real head cases and a massive reputation (657) for being one of the all time nasty crews. Even I still get swept up in the emotion of it all. Of all the games I have ever been to this is the only one that has a serious edge.
