Huntingdon Posted 3 August, 2011 Share Posted 3 August, 2011 I've been invited through work to attend the 'Old Firm' match on September 18th at Ibrox. We'll be in the Rangers end (corporate main stand) Has anyone ever been to one? If so, any advice?
Colinjb Posted 3 August, 2011 Share Posted 3 August, 2011 Rename yourself "Seamus O'Malley" Wear a green suit. Be sure to have a Rod Stewart album prominently playing on your iPod/iPhone. Casually drop into conversation your new found membership of Sinn Fein. Bon chance!!!!
Glasgow_Saint Posted 3 August, 2011 Share Posted 3 August, 2011 Ive been - no more intense than Saints V Skates imo
This Charming Man Posted 3 August, 2011 Share Posted 3 August, 2011 I've been to one. Well worth doing and as for comparing it to our derby with the Skates, don't be daft. You must've sat there with ear-muffs and a blindfold on. It's in a totally different league and generally regarded by most people throughout the world as one of the best derbies going. Just make sure you don't sing GSTQ or Rule Brittania, you'll be branded a bigot and arrested for sectarian singing. IRA songs are deemed fine by the local plod though... HK_Phoey Posted 3 August, 2011 Share Posted 3 August, 2011 I have been to two or three. Agree it is one of the best derbies. Very intense. If you are in the Rangers end do not wear any green. Anywhere. I would also compare the intensity with a Saints v pompey (not the noise though) the only difference being they get to go through it 4+ times a year, every year and whoever does the best wins the league. We go through it on average maybe six or seven times in the last 20 years. Don't think my body could stand doing it four times a year.

Huntingdon Posted 18 September, 2011 Author Share Posted 18 September, 2011 Just got back - Amazing atmosphere, absolutely loved it It was all a bit tense outside, but was very heavily policed I know Rangers have got into trouble over recent seasons for sectarian chanting, but it was rife today You can't change mentalities overnight with fines it's built into their culture For anybody who's never been to an 'Old Firm' match, make sure you add it to your bucket lists
JRM Posted 20 September, 2011 Share Posted 20 September, 2011 (edited) Just got back - Amazing atmosphere, absolutely loved it It was all a bit tense outside, but was very heavily policed I know Rangers have got into trouble over recent seasons for sectarian chanting, but it was rife today You can't change mentalities overnight with fines it's built into their culture For anybody who's never been to an 'Old Firm' match, make sure you add it to your bucket lists people who go on about "sectarian singing" often don't think about the origins and identity drawn through the songs have a watch of this of Rangers in Valencia superb stuff, whatever your political or religious beliefs there is no doubt that vocally they are one of the best supported teams going. I would not call myself a Rangers "fan" but would back them over Celtic anyday and have been to Ibrox to see them play Hibs, Porto in the champs league 3-2 win, and was at the City of Manchester stadium for the Uefa cup final 2008, i'd like to see a different scottish side win the league though, Aberdeen, Hearts or Dundee United.
