Best song ever written?

Up there with Stairway to Heaven, Hallelujah and Fear of the Dark...

It's a subjective matter of opinion - there is no best or worst. IMO though, no, and very definitely not in the case of Hallelujah.

"Stairway to Heaven" is probably not LZ's best, IMO that accolade goes to "Kashmir" or "When the Levee Breaks", and FOTD is not the best of the Mighty Maiden, 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' or 'Montsegur' are 2 that I would personally rate higher.

And as for the premise of the OP, anybody's response will probably vary day to day, depending on their mood and recollection.

You called?

It's a good one, yes. I actually prefer the live version on the 'Pulse' album, although when you go back to the original, it has a certain crispness to it which I adore.

One of the only ones to recognise my King Crimson avatar too...lol

21st Century Schizoid Man contains one of the finest prog moments ever, the saxophone, drum and guitar bit is incredible.

No Bohemian Rhapsody is the best IMHO. My all time fave is Something in the Air Thunderclap Newman, Grooving by the Young Rascals, another beauty. Hard to choose the best Led Zep song, so many are good. Same for Pink Floyd

This!

Always preferred Echoes or Dogs to Shine on your crazy diamond.

Couldn't agree more with both those statements. In fact I was listening to the Pulse version when I posted this. Learning to Fly on Pulse is also better I think...

Also a big fan of 'Phantom of the Opera' by Maiden. Kashmir is quality by the way.

Kashmir is my fave LZ , Wish you were here and Diamond are sublime but I do rather love the live version of Comfortably Numb from the distant sound of thunder live album, the second guitar solo is immense.

Most of Live after Death is absolutely classic Maiden

Last month in Alushta (near Yalta) the wife and I were walking down to the beach, as we passed an open air cafe (with great views of the bay) we heard the opening cords of Shine on you Crazy Diamond coming from within. We looked at one another and both said, 'let's stop and have a beer'.

I'm not sure about the best song ever, but we had to stop and listen (and it was a good excuse for a beer, or two).

Maiden on at the O2 Friday night - I'll be there, just a pity it clashes with the Great British Beer Festival. But I get to go to that tonight and tomorrow to make up for it - plus Leeds on Saturday - what a great four days!!

I was there last night (BBF)!!!
