OldNick Posted 2 August, 2011 Share Posted 2 August, 2011 What a good way of getting tax in, and morally correct. It could be seen as a luxury tax as a takeaway is a luxury. The clear up that we all pay for when the litter is discarded is enormous. Just a few pence extra taqx on a big mac, a chinese takeaway container, Costa coffee cup would raise millions for the exchequer. I can't see any negative to the argument. Chewing gum should also have a high taxation banding
Weston Super Saint Posted 2 August, 2011 Share Posted 2 August, 2011 There's already a tax on takeaway packaging, it's called VAT! Instead of finding ways for the government to add more tax onto consumers, how about finding ways to make the government more efficient, get rid of all the red tape and 'non' jobs, and use the money saved to employ people that are actually needed in our society, such as street cleaners, bin emptiers etc! How often do you find a bin these days whilst walking the streets, they're certainly getting rarer, especially the council owned and run ones. So, no, not more tax, as this will just open the floodgates for more pointless taxes.

It is a way of raising revenue that perhaps could cut taxation elsewhere.
bridge too far Posted 2 August, 2011 Share Posted 2 August, 2011 I agree with you Nick (that's got to be a first!). You never know, it might help reduce obesity too and that'll save the NHS a fair bit. Did you see on BBC yesterday where they roped off an area of Hyde Park and didn't send litter pickers in for two days? You would have been gob-smacked at the amount of litter that accumulated! In just 48 hours!

Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 2 August, 2011 Share Posted 2 August, 2011 A brilliant idea. Would not only help the finances but also the environment and the state of many town/city centres.

Socialism is all about paying taxes, but making it fair for all,not allowing the super rich to get away with paying next to nothing.

hutch Posted 3 August, 2011 Share Posted 3 August, 2011 Over here in SA we have to pay for plastic bags at the supermarket. It was introduced for "environmental reasons" about 3 years ago. In all that time I haven't seen 1 person bring their old used bags to the shop. We still pay for them & stick them in the bin, like everybody else. Probably not a true tax, though, because I think the supermarket keeps the money. I think they're about 1p each. On a decent weekend shop, that's about 10p on £

On a decent weekend shop, that's about 10p on £150 We also have to pay for plastic bags here, and not just the carrier bags but the ones used for fruits, bread, meat, etc. Carrier bags are about 50p, the small plastic bags around 10p. Most people use their bags many times. Similarly you pay extra for the box if you get a take-away pizza, the bag if you have McDonalds to go, etc.

Another thing which they should do there which happens here, anyone 'signing on' should work for the local council for one or two days a week cleaning the streets, parks, etc. i.e. working for their benefit money.
