10 years at St Marys

supersonic

According to the Echo, we've been at St Mary's for 10 years now, to me that's gone very, very quickly.

Just wanderig what everyone's favourite St Mary's moment was?

Mine was either the 3-0 v p*********

Or the 3-2 v Sheff Utd when we stayed up and the pitch invasion that followed

A few for me, all games i've been to.

Pahars v Charlton, November 2001. My first game at St Mary's and our first win, magic.

Crouch/Prutton v Liverpool. February 2005. We comprehensively destroyed the soon to be European champions. The game that sold Crouch to Benitez.

Camara v Norwich, April 2005. The noise of that celebration will stay with me forever.

Bale v Coventry, August 2006. Superb free kick and bragging rights over my neighbours, lovely.

Stern John v Sheffield United, May 2008. Wonderful game, an absolute rollercoaster.

Forte/Barnard v the Franchise. April 2011. The moment I knew automatic promotion back to the championship could happen.

All v Walsall. May 2011. What a wonderful party.

The 3-2 against Sheff Utd was probably the wildest swings in emotion I've had during a game there, thankfully it ended with jubilation, and me grabbing Stern John in a headlock.

Excellent question though - been some great games there. Think the best game I've seen at St Marys was probably the 3-3 with Newcastle when Alan Blayney made that incredible save,

Best performance was the 4-0 vs the North London Yobbos at the start of the 2003 cup run. Live on the beeb - people coming up to me at work the next day saying how well we'd played.

I'd agree with that, along with Marion's goal against the Skates.

- First win V Charlton - Simon Brown's shot hitting the inside of the post and rolling back across the line!

- Riise's bizarre own goal v Liverpool 2001/2. Is that the most odd goal scored at SMS thus far?

- 3-2 win over Arsenal, Delgado even scored!

- 4-2 comeback win over Fulham on the windiest ever day at SMS

- 4-0 FA Cup demolition of Spurs and it should be have been a few more as well. Best display by Saints since the 6-3 win over Man U

- 2-0 Wolves FA Cup Q-F

- 2-0 Carling Cup win over Skates, electric atmosphere

- 3-0 win over Skates, Marion's brilliant goal

- 4-3 Norwich, the deafening noise after Camara's goal

- 2-0 win over Coventry 2006/7, Bale's free kick

- 3-2 Sheff Utd

- Walsall home last season

Best goals against us would have to be Venus's blockbuster 30 yarder for Ipswich in 2001/2, Tugay's monster for Blackburn, Marcus Bent's control and volley (although it still makes me sick even now). For us, I was in Barbados for the Test match and had lent my Dad my ST when I was in a bar and Delap's overhead kick came on Fox Sports - wow! Oakley's MLT flick up and volley free kick V Hull never gets discussed on here for some reason and of course who could forget his stunner Vs the Skates which almost broke the net. Fernandes hit a scorching free kick V West Ham. More recently, Rickie and Harding scored two beauties V Tranmere last season and Connolly v Norwich. Best of the lot has to be Marion Vs the Skates though!

To be honest, apart from more comfortable surroundings and a generally cleaner and more salubrious atmosphere, the SMS experience as far as football is concerned has been somewhat negative and forgettable. It has been a decade of acrimony, politics and failure with few if any truly memorable moments For me the highlight was the fly-past towing the anti-Lowe banner and the unanimous standing of 22,000 fans to the chant "If you hate Lowe, Stand Up!"

There's another match that stands out in the memory, but for footballing reasons

Did anyone go to the Sheff Utd night match in late December 2006?

I've never been so cold at a football match, you could actually see the frost spreading across the pitch as the game went on

My St Mary's Memories so far :

Mark Venus' 3rd for Ipswich on Strachan's managerial debut - would we ever win at St Mary's?

Steve Brown of Charlton's shot hitting the post and trundling along the line when we were still desperate for that first home win.

Scott Parker's curler into the top corner with Niemi just watching

Telfer lobbing the keeper from 35 yards in the last game of 2001/2 (and El Kelloggs decapitating Dyer)

Pahars' goal v Skate Cheats FC

The megastore manager getting me a UEFA Cup XL sized shirt from player stock as we'd run out

Prutton shoving the ref whilst trying to get to the linesman

Crouch's 90th minute penalty winner v Skates

The last 10 minutes v Norwich in the Prem with the roof all but coming off

3-0 up against Leeds and cruising with 15 minutes to go

The sound of banging chairs at 3-0 down to Watford in the Championship

The first chorus of Swing Lowe

Stand Up if you want Lowe Out going all around the ground

Gareth Bale's first 5 free-kicks in his first full season

Viafara smashing his teeth out and then heading the ball clear from the next corner

"We are top of the League" when Jermaine Wright scored to put us 1-0 up against QPR, before Kelv went walkabout (mainly because I was still running to the ground at the time)

On the pitch after staying up against Sheff Utd

Saints Aid

Beating Yeovil at home for our first win of 2009/10 when 8 points adrift of League One - we had finally turned the corner.

Waving wads of Monopoly money at the Skates in 2010

Telling the wife I'd propose to her if we scored 10 against Walsall and Huddersfield in 2010 and the team going out and doing it (I was going to ask anyway)

Chaplow's goal v Man U, and knocking it around for 10 minutes whilst leading

Forte's equaliser v MK Dons in the League One promotion season.

Pahars' goal was the top one for me, I nearly passed out.

Not really a big fan of SMS, its too boring and doesn't have a unique feel due to it being similar to Leicester's, Derby's, Darlington's, Middlesbrough etc...

Some games that spring to mind in the last 10 years though:

Saints 1-0 Man Utd - From memory we dominated this game, usually when that happens vs Man Utd they get the lucky last minute winner, but not this time!

Saints 2-0 Pompey - Carling Cup, my first experience of a South Coast derby, loved it.

Saints 3-0 Pompey - Great scenes when Marian scored.

Saints 4-3 Norwich - What a game, shame it didn't mean anything in the end.

Saints 4-3 Birmingham - Yet another great game. We tore them a new one in the first half but took our foot off the gas. My heart skipped a beat when a Birmingham player headed over Davis with the last kick of the game, thankfully it landed on top of the net though.

Saints 3-2 Sheffield United - Great atmosphere and a good end to what was a very disappointing season.

Saints 1-2 Sheffield United - 13,000 crowd and we dominated the game - thought we had got something in the last minute only for SU to score again. The ground quickly emptied, seemed like the only way was down.

Saints 2-2 Burnley - Terrible day, beginning life in league one with minus 10 was confirmed and I felt like all hope on finding a new owner had gone.

Saints 5-0 Huddersfield - One of the best performances I can remember at St. Mary's in recent years, we were fantastic that night.

Saints 3-1 MK Dons - JPT, great atmosphere that night. 90% of the Northam Stand was packed with Saints fans, all standing and chanting.

Saints 1-2 Man Utd - Chaplow's goal and the confidence from the lads. We played great for the majority of that match but sadly the lads tired.

Saints 4-1 Huddersfield - Probably our best home performance of the season last season, after a 10 minute spell where it could have been 3-3 we contained them and tore them a new one.

Saints 3-2 MK Dons - Lost hope of promotion after they scored their 2nd, only for Forte to shut me up. Barnard's finish sent the crowd crazy and the last 5 minutes of MK Dons hitting the ball into our box was a nightmare.

Saints 3-1 Walsall - Fantastic atmosphere from both sets of fans and good scenes at the end.

Special mention for Saints 1-1 Newcastle, fair few years ago now (2003ish?). It was when we were at our peak with Strachan in charge - seeing two attractive attacking sides going at each other was a joy to watch, you could see the mutual respect between the players after the game and the fan acknowledgment that we had not seen some run-of-the-mill draw

Just getting back in time for the first ever Prem game at SMS v Chelsea.

My first view of the ground from outside made me think, Feck me we have arrived in the Big Time and then the view and atmosphere from Block 1 ? right next to The chelsea fans was simply fantastic.

No more little old Southampton surviving on 15232 capacity crowds - we are going places now - meh - little did I know then exactly where we were going :?

10 pretty eventful years, most of them sh*tty, but highlighted with special moments that only supporters of non big six clubs can understand.

The Roman Empire rose and then fell

I feel proud to have seen SFC Rise, Fall and then Rise Again.

As i enter into my 51 year of support, at 57, the passion for the club is still there,it never went away even during the Lowe,Wilde, Crouch era,

Got to be the 4v0 thrashing of spuds in the cup.

My last game before i went travelling to Oz.....I said in the aftermath that if we got to the final I'd come back (never thought this would happen) we did and i did f*****g expensive round trip that one but worth it to see the yellows at cardiff!

Was that the game Shearer stuck up for Beattie when he thought the Ref was being to harsh?

Well, if you're truly Supersonic, I suppose it would have gone very, very quickly indeed! (;

Highlight? Mmm, either the hate Lowe stand-up (shivers down neck time), or, Crouchy's pen against the Skates after the hand-ball. Insanely funny and celebratory at the same time! lol

As the question is asking for a "moment" I would discount the 4-0 demolition of the Spuds in the cup as that was 90 minutes of joy. For me it's between Camara's winner against Norwich (4-3) and the unfurling of the "Duck Off Rupert" banner in 2006. It was revealed slowly from right to left so you saw "off" then "k", "c", "u" .....

I was there...sure we lost 1-0....and saw a great hope in cranie get done for pace by shipperley...I knew then that cranie would never really make it

had to lie down on the SMS concrete that night to get my hernia to go back in !! Happy days. thanks for the great service , NHS/government !!

not my best day at the footy.

Best moment for me at SMS, probably the second goal in the wolves cup game.

Not just you Charlie, but this typifies some of the sad ****ers that call themselves Saint's fans. 10 years, 300ish games of football and your most memorable thing was a banner? FFS - get a life.

For me (a football fan) the best was :

- Camara's goal vs. Norwich or 4-1 against Spurs in the cup.

And the worse was :

- Leeds comeback from 3-0 to win 4-3.

(For the poster who said Blayney's save vs. Newcastle, wasn't it Paul Smith?)

The first home league win at -St Marys against Charlton was pretty special. We beat them 1-0 thanks to a superb Beattie cross and an equally superb Pahars header. We absolutely pulverised them the whole game, and they nearly mugged a point in the last couple of minutes, when a bobbling shot, and their only shot on target in the game came back of the inside of the post. Definately not the best game, but arguably the most important home win, especially as it took us till november to get it.

Any win against the cheats from down the road, but that first game against them in the League Cup, night game and Beattie grabbing a brace fantastic although followed pretty closely by Crouch's penalty winner & super-Marians goal as well.

Overall the best game has to be that cup game against Spurs, they were lucky to only go down 4-0 that night.

April 2003, 3-2 v Leeds - the game after we had beaten Watford in the FA Cup semi final. Cracking atmosphere. We completely outclassed them. Ormerod scored early on after being the hero the week before. The third goal (Anders Svensson) was probably the best team goal I've seen by Saints. It was completely summed by nearly losing it at the end (against 10 men), holding on after being 3-0 up - it was classic Saints and why I love watching them so much! And Strachan was humorous as usual in the post match press conference saying something like 'you'd have seen a grown man cry if we'd lost that at the end we were so dominant'.

beating arsenal 3-2 in 2002/3 - the best moment would have to be the triple save by niemi from viera in the 2nd half

ormerod vs scmeichel 2-0

beattie vs fulham 4-2

1-0 vs man u in 2003/4

4-3 vs norwich in 2004/5

3-2 vs blackburn 2004/5
