Liquidshokk Posted 1 August, 2011 Share Posted 1 August, 2011 Anyone know any good ways of being able to watch UK TV channels online whilst abroad? Iplayer and Sky GO wont work as it detects youre not in the uk. Found a recommendation about this site http://www.ukivpn.com/ which for £50 a year provides a VPN so that you appear to be in the UK. Anyone tried it? Tried any others? dubai_phil Posted 1 August, 2011 Share Posted 1 August, 2011 (edited) You need to install one of those IP Address blockers, vidalia linked with Tor is one that I had for a while but used up too much bandwidth. A mate uses more up to date and they seem to be fine. When the first version was installed on my laptop it took ages and needed all sorts of stuff typed into weird places, so after the old laptop died I really could not be assed to try and do it myself. I DID get to watch the previous series of Torchwood on it but a mate is a torrent freak and bumbles round with a decent sized USB Flash drive these days to keep me updated & I can plug those into my cheapy DVD on my Home Theatre system far easier to watch than the 17" LCD in my office upstairs! (Wirelss not got enough bandwith downstairs unfortunately!) Another system used here is a slingbox. I understand the concept (stream the UK set top box into the internet to a fixed IP point). Some bars here have it for a back up & a couple of mates have them. It needed a mate with tekkie skills to set up So go google Edited 1 August, 2011 by dubai_phil

HK_Phoey Posted 1 August, 2011 Share Posted 1 August, 2011 I signed up for a VPN services costs about US$100/ year. The one I am using is http://www.scothosts.com. Two basic services, proxy or VPN, VPN is slightly better, webstites believe you are UK based
dubai_phil Posted 1 August, 2011 Share Posted 1 August, 2011 Vidalia / Tor create a UK IP address for you I ain't got a clue on the technicalities but it stops the IP Address showing as non UK (ie blocks it from the stream/feed/Iplayer) I am relaiably informed that Hotspot shield provides an extremely decent VPN service and it is free ( web site has a zillion pop ups allegedly) of course here it is legal to use VPN but illegal to download it here or promote it. Sorry not more tekkie mate who knows this stuff is on hols so cannot even ask

Valesaint Posted 1 August, 2011 Share Posted 1 August, 2011 I find Lamnia is very good quality and value. Good technical support. Google it. tvcatchup does not work outside UK and it even doesn't work with Lamnia. Sky and BBC do though.

Blue_Arsed_Fly Posted 16 August, 2011 Share Posted 16 August, 2011 Been looking for a decent streaming service to watch UK TV abroad for several months & all I found was software with largely non-English channel selections, most channels not working, poor quality or glitchy when they do & very slow buffer times. Finally found a site that was perfect in every way that I'm sure will interest all ex-pats. Free 15 minute preview from here so you can decide for yourselves: http://televisionbbcnewstv.com/liveabroad Will save you a great deal of messing about with proxys, VPN connections & the like. & that's if you're extremely lucky & happen to find a worthwhile streaming service, which are few & far between. Plays in near-perfect quality through my 42" plasma via HDMI also. Hope it's of benefit.

Do you need to start the 15 minute preview somehow?! Movies etc is working without signing up. EDIT: trial ended automatically but didnt get to watch sky sports 1 on any of the streams offered. Blue_Arsed_Fly Posted 16 August, 2011 Share Posted 16 August, 2011 All channels, except the VNC list work for the preview, I think. Should mention that it's the first & only service that offers iPad & iPhone streaming outside the UK also. You get it across all platforms for the tenner monthly fee also. "SOMEONE I KNOW" is hoping to let his dad use his sky player service from his parents home in another country This works well. http://strongvpn.com I watch iPlayer/4OD etc using this on my iPad. Cost is $55 year. It should also work for the Sky Player too if your "friend" gives your Dad the log in! I would also use it for Sky Player, but unfortunately you can only sign up to Sky with a British address and credit card.

Blue_Arsed_Fly Posted 18 August, 2011 Share Posted 18 August, 2011 Proxys only work with Internet Explorer for me, which is annoying as IE is awful. & there are huge security issues associated with proxys as if the individual running the proxy is untrustworthy you could be opening yourself up for identity theft, spyware & viruses. By using a proxy you are opening the contents of your communications to the owner of the proxy &, as proxys are in effect cheating your IP address to break laws, are you willing to take that risk? Much rather pay a tenner. I'll stick with these, thanks: http://televisionbbcnewstv.com/liveabroad
dubai_phil Posted 18 August, 2011 Share Posted 18 August, 2011 what what what?! Anyone used this? Is it simple and does it muck up proxy settings after use? Can I access iPlayer from 6000 miles away? Yes. Had it on my old laptop. The mix was Firefox, Tor and Vidalia. Worked well enough for me to watch the last (non Yankified) series of Torchwood amongst others. Downsides were 1) Had to be installed by a geek 2) Meant I needed two browsers IE for work & Firefox for TV 3) Had to be embedded into the Registry & Boot sequences, as a result EVERY time I rebooted or switched on it took forever to load (Was on XP tho) and when I wasn't on a wireless kept firing up error messages when I was trying to give Powerpoints etc. BUT it DOES work and if you have a dedicated home machine worth finding a geek The Geek has the latest version installed and watches UKTV all the time and makes the point of annoying me by calling while he watches cup footie on Beeb or ITV knowing I refuse to re-install! Another technology to check out is a Slingbox. Quite a few here have those. It fires a Sat Decoder signal down the internet so you can watch Sky directly. For that they mostly have a 2nd decoder at the UK point and pre-plan what they want to watch, I heard there are some systems you can change channel on through the web but that is WAY above me. My dodgy TV viewing these days is limited to buying 50 or 60 DVD's at a time while in Asia after a nasty infection experience from Bit Torrent

Thanks for the heads up on this RUt...looks easier than the other Proxy packages based on what DubaiPhil was saying. Norway...is your system still stable after instal/reinstall multiple times? ie - does it mess around with configuration settings that you must also manually reset? What is the streaming speed like through (iPlayer for example.) Getting quite excited about this...and will be be so much more convenient than box.biz torrent downloads! Blue_Arsed_Fly Posted 8 September, 2011 Share Posted 8 September, 2011 Expatshield is handy. Reckon they're trustworthy enough too as surely it'd be shut down & not be as well known as it is if they were engaging in stealing people's info, like a lot of VPN/proxys. BritTV's been down so been using Expatshield myself, but missing their huge channel selection. Got an email from admin earlier saying it should be back up some time tomorrow, though. Saint in Paradise Posted 9 September, 2011 Share Posted 9 September, 2011 (edited) Why after downloading expatshield do I get adverts on this forum and why does it go direct to a porn website sometimes? Rather a large concern. Just realised I downloaded something called iLivid or similar as I thought it was associated with the BBC iPlayer. Have now deleted it and don't get the porn site but still get adverts at top of page on here. doubleonothing Posted 23 August, 2012 Share Posted 23 August, 2012 I use Viewtvabroad.com when overseas. Never had a problem with it. It's about 4.99 a month and works on the iPad and the laptop. Iplayer and the like work fine with it.
toofarnorth Posted 23 August, 2012 Share Posted 23 August, 2012 You could just buy a friend a router with a built in vpn and then connect to that when you're away. Whenever i'm away I just connect to my work VPN and it works fine that way.
