To be fair the J league is of a pretty high standard now-a-days as is the Japanese national team. This was proven in their performance both against England before the world cup and during the world cup. There is a culture in the UK that if he is not a big name or on the cover of a magazine, he is not a good player. Look how the English 'superstars' get on internationally to see how true this theory is...

20 goals in 30 games is good, promotion and continued a goal every two games this season.

This is quite a good article in WSC, 3% of World Cup players play in the J-League, comparable with Brazil and Turkey. However the comment below the article does say there is very little movement from the J-League to europe, but then the same could be said of our league.

I have to disagree. I regularly watch the A-League and seeing the J league teams playing in the Asian Champions league against the Australian teams I think their players in general are are some way off the standard required for us as we are looking to push, over the next couple of years, toward the EPL.

Remember being in the Milton End as a kid and hearing we were about to sign Lineker from Grampus 8 before the game only for the deal to have fallen through due to his dodgy toe by half time. Gutted, along with Gazza, Shearer and Le Tiss he was my favourite player as a kid!

It's a poor league. Probably similar standard to the SPL.

I think you are right, that in general they are some way off the standard required. However, the very best players are definitely good enough higher NPC lower Prem. This has been proven over the years with players such as Nakata and Nakamura. I would rate Park ji Sung (I know he is not Japanese) as one of Man Utd's better players and Ryo Miyaichi as one of Arsenal's best young prospects. I am not saying this guy would be a world beater (I don't know much about him) just that the standard is not pub team as many 'little Englanders' think (by no means a dig at you St Jim). A couple of the younger players at the right price are definitely worth a gamble or at least a trial.

Ahem... http://www.goal.com/en/news/462/netherlands/2011/12/21/2812586/official-vitesse-sign-japan-international-mike-havenaar

"Vitesse had been following the 24-year-old attacker for the last six months and beat the likes of Wolfsburg and Stuttgart to Havenaar's signature."

I feel your pain.

I started a thread several years ago about Rickie Lambert....

The person they usually contact to sort out medicals

As I have said before, a month ago, maybe two, I did see an asian man, suited and booted, being shown around on a match day before kick-off. He posed for a photograph with Nigel Adkins at the end of the tunnel too. He may well have been signed and put in the development side, who knows.

If you saw an "asian" man it certainly wasn't Havenaar who is dutch. Asian men are seldom 6'4'' and named Mike.

Ryoichi Maeda would be my guess.

Hmm, he's 30 according to my best Googling, this guy looked early 20s.

Without wishing to go through the whole 'ear lobes' debate which I sparked a few years back, this guy had spiky hair. From what I can see on Google, Mr. Maeda prefers the longer barnet.

We have been scouting in asia though, that is for certain. A few months ago I spoke to a kid playing in Hong Kong who was scouted by Saints, he said at the time he was waiting to talk to someone from the academy about a potential move when he's older. Chelsea had been sniffing around too.

Josh Kennedy has been top scorer in the J League for last couple of seasons I think and he is ****ing gash. Says a bit about the standard. Hope its an up and coming talent.

Ah Josh Kennedy. That name takes me back. FM2010 with Nagoya Grampus Eight. I used to sell him, always got about £2m plus. For some reason the Swiss clubs were lining up for him.

Do we maybe mean Arsenal youngster Ryo Miyaichi who impressed at Feyenoord last season? Just a guess though and it would have to be a loan...

Have to say, he has the same build and is the same height as I remember. Hair is spiky.

It's all hearsay though, could have been absolutely anyone, but I know what I saw! Apologies to wireframebox for hijacking the thread.
