The Majestic Channon Posted 31 July, 2011 Share Posted 31 July, 2011 Will be having a long weekend in london on the pop with mates in october, anyone familier with camden town? How touristy is it ? want to avoid the tourist trap if possible. Done soho , covent garden etc numerous times and am bored with it. Hoping to visit the dublin castle pub in camden being an old nutty boy
Thedelldays Posted 31 July, 2011 Share Posted 31 July, 2011 (edited) yes...used to live there..... camdem market is ok, up by the lock...basically turn right out of the station (you will know what I mean)...that is camden high street.. it is little touristy and will get plenty of trendy types round there...if you are lucky, you may meet an N-dub or amy winehouse fans lol Edited 31 July, 2011 by Thedelldays
ozzmeister Posted 31 July, 2011 Share Posted 31 July, 2011 Was there this weekend not touristy, very indie rock scene. For novelty value go to hawley arms, also some good clubs if dancing is your thing! If your there for weekend also go to hoxton square near old street and also electric showroom or cargo later on. The Majestic Channon Posted 31 July, 2011 Author Share Posted 31 July, 2011 Cheers both. Ozz-Hawley arms sounds good but as for the clubs depends what the music is like? I'm probably a bit older than you and still can't see past 70's punk and ska I usually drink myself silly on real ale and moan about the music being played a late pub with bearable music will do us. ericb Posted 31 July, 2011 Share Posted 31 July, 2011 Camden is a complete tourist trap and has been for years, the music scene moved to Shoreditch/old street/hoxton probably about a decade ago and has now moved up towards Hackney more with the arty stuff being spread between hackney and camberwell. For good nights out Brixton is still quality and actually for something a bit more refined around Ladbrook Groove is pretty nice these days too. scotty Posted 31 July, 2011 Share Posted 31 July, 2011 The sunday market at camden lock is good, and theres a brilliant s/hand bookshop alongside it. Couldnt get over the number of tattoo parlours on the high st, we saw the blockheads a couple of years back at the electric ballroom, thats a decent venue too. Saint-scooby Posted 1 August, 2011 Share Posted 1 August, 2011 The Stables market is quite good, try and get free food samples on the stalls..
labibs Posted 1 August, 2011 Share Posted 1 August, 2011 Live in Camden, the market attracts the crowds and will get very busy, but is definitely worth checking out. Loads of pubs in the area, most of which are okay and not really tourist focused. If the weather is nice, the Edinburgh castle just off Parkway has a very decent beer garden. Probably worth sticking your head in the Hawley Arms, but always found it a bit prentetious myself. There will be a lot of pubs in the area playing live music, but its often hit and miss as to what kind of stuff they are playing and whether they are any good or not. If you're on a little session, maybe ask the daytime bar staff what the evening bands would be like. A bit further up Haverstock Hill, the Sir Richard Steele is decent for a few beers. Deano6 Posted 1 August, 2011 Share Posted 1 August, 2011 I lived there a few years ago. Hasn't Stables Market been torn down now for flats? Was just starting to happen when I left.

tpbury Posted 1 August, 2011 Share Posted 1 August, 2011 I always enjoyed the Elephant and the Oxford (Arms?), also that tiddy place on the road island. Even the Wetherspoons is goodish. Then to buy some herbal tea. How many times did I end up smoking rosehip frickin tea!?!?

Oh, I think I got the wrong end of the stick when they said it was taken over by a Property Consortium. Here was the campaign to "save" it... http://savecamdenstables.co.uk/article.htm

The Elephant's Head has a skinhead night on Sunday last time I was there, was a good laugh.

Not really - fairly different "scene" in Hoxton/Shoreditch to Camden. Re. Camden - lots of good pubs for an evening on the beer, Oxford Arms and Elephant's Head my personal favourites. Don't rate Camden Market at all, sells rubbish tat and over-priced fast food under the guise of it being either "ethnic" or "alternative".
