Liquidshokk Posted 31 July, 2011 Share Posted 31 July, 2011 Anyone know what's happened down at the Exford Avenue shops? Was down there earlier and the whole place was covered in rubbish, windows boarded up or covered in protective mesh and dumped furniture lying around. Looks to be in a state of complete abandonment. I used to live nearby 10 years ago and don't remember it being QUITE as bad. I did notice a poster saying improvements are on the way. Anyone know anything about this? That really is one big turd to try and polish..
Huntingdon Posted 31 July, 2011 Share Posted 31 July, 2011 Terrible area I used to be a Pharmacy rep, so I often visited the chemist there It was a constant battle for the pharmacist, people would be regularly breaking in looking for drugs I also used to visit the two chemists in St Mary's Road Being dressed in a suit, the moment I was getting ready to leave prostitutes would descend on me. I obviously looked prime business!
Smirking_Saint Posted 31 July, 2011 Share Posted 31 July, 2011 Used to walk to Northam Estate from St Denys, and the quickest way was Obv through the industrial estate there. As a 15/16 yr old that was a MASSIVE eye opener, during the summer you had the usual inustrial estate users, occasional blood spatters here and there and also broken needles etc. In the winter (as the nights drew in) I used to get swamped by Prossies, and never any decent looking ones (not that I ever would pay for sex, and have never understood anyone that would). That was 9/10 years ago, but then this year I had to do some work in Bevois Valley Sub to ensure the electric stayed on late one night, and can say that its not really improved at all. Anywho, I know all that boll*cks wasn't strictly on topic, and nor is this. Whats happened around Orange Rooms, Budha etc ?? Police tape everywhere. Huntingdon Posted 31 July, 2011 Share Posted 31 July, 2011 Are you talking about highfield?? I think he's generally talking about other terrible areas in Southampton. I assume the industrial estate Smirking talks about is Empress Road? I'm led to believe that's the main Red Light drag, so he was pretty brave walking down there after dark! littleoldladysaint Posted 31 July, 2011 Share Posted 31 July, 2011 I can remember Harefield,or the Harefield Estate as it was known then, when it was newly built (my ID is not little oldladysaint for nothing!) and it was a really nice area. My aunt and uncle with their 2 littl'uns lived in Exford Avenue and believe me all the tenants took great pride in their homes and gardens - the whole place was spotless. There were no 'undesirables' there of any kind. I am not doubting what posters are saying about it now but it is very hard to imagine it like that and very sad. Liquidshokk Posted 31 July, 2011 Author Share Posted 31 July, 2011 No....Basically. Alright. I thought for a minute you were saying you walked through harefield to get to northam estate from st denys. Then assumed you must mean highfield.
Turkish Posted 31 July, 2011 Share Posted 31 July, 2011 My old man lives of Somerset avenue, where he lives is alright. As council estates go it's one of the best ones. Thornhill, lordhill, millbrook and townhill are all a lot worse.

I know the majority of the shops has now closed down anyway.

Can't believe of all the estates you talk about Weston and Northam are not involved. I actually am banned from working alone in Northam estate. And Liquid, sorry mate, yes on about Empress road. Thornhill, lordhill, millbrook and townhill are all a lot worse. That's the thing, harefield as a whole isn't too bad (I lived by the harefield schools) But the area around the shops including the blocks of flats is just awful. Someone had gone on a rampage with the (most likely overflowing) rubbish bins and old dumped furniture. There were kids picking through it and broken windows everywhere. If I didn't know that generally it's a run down area around the shops I would have thought something serious had happened.
Dimond Geezer Posted 1 August, 2011 Share Posted 1 August, 2011 Townhill Park isn't quite as bad as people make out. The private area from Woodmill Lane up to about the bus turning area is relatively nice, there are some skanky flats from the bus turning up to Townhill Way, but it's not a violent area and I wouldn't have any qualms about walking through there at night. I would guess this is the same with all areas. My in-laws live in Lordshill & although it's gone downhill in the last 20 years, I wouldn't fear it. Unfortunately, and this can be said for all areas, it's the chavy/lazy minority few that let the area/estate down, and these people generally live in rented accomodation and have little regard for the community, other people or property. Easty Posted 1 August, 2011 Share Posted 1 August, 2011 I have to admit, when ever I go back to Harefield Estate and visit my sister I do cringe a bit. I was brought up on the Estate untill I left Moorhill in 76. Back in the good old days, it was still a $hit hole but it was home, there was never loads of rubbish laying anywhere, just seems now a days, people who live on these estates have no respect and throw their crap everywere. On the subject of the Exford and the shops area, about bloody time was always the worst part of the estate.

Saintbatchy Posted 2 August, 2011 Share Posted 2 August, 2011 That big block of flats in Harefield is being knocked down and rebuilt. Most of the residents moved out last year. The Exford arms is going to be a Tesco Express. Harefield isn't that bad as council estates go, but it has it's fair share of effing noisy teenagers! Is that both the big blocks of flats or just the one nearest the shops? Are the shops being flattened too? They are unbelievably dated. It's like going through a time warp going into esgros as I seem to remember it being called...

Dimond Geezer Posted 3 August, 2011 Share Posted 3 August, 2011 Poor people are a real pain... Nothing wrong with being poor. It's people who are too lazy to look after themselves & have no respect for others who are the pain. Wealth has no bearing on politeness, the ability to bin litter or keep your living accomodation clean.
Redondo Saint Posted 3 August, 2011 Share Posted 3 August, 2011 Used to sometimes drink in the Exford and Fox and Hounds. Harefield used to be alright as other posters have said. Shame what's happened.
