Sydenham and Davies just a class act

Indeed - I was fortunate enough to be at that match.

Sydenham spent his career in the shadow of Terry Paine to a great extent and Paine's talents endured to become a class midfielder as he slowed down whereas John Sydenham eventually got kicked in to retirement as I recall...superb crosser of the ball though and what can be said about Ron Davies that's not been said already. I have never in all my football watching career seen a better 'hanger' and header of the ball. Really nice guy too.....I had his autograph a couple of times and each time he was really friendly to a star-struck kid.

Sydenham was very good as you say very left footed very quick and a good crosser did not score that many goals.

Used to serve him petrol for his Austin A40 in the filling station on West End Road in Bitterne really nice chap too as you would expect from a fellow ex St Mary's College pupil

Yes, absolutely agree...I still feel privileged to have lived through that era/

Incredible era......how high could Davies jump...Ron Davies bloody fantastic......The rest of the team were pretty useful too .....Hughie Fisher - God I used to curse him though - might appreciate him more these days - not sure..lol

Difference between Sydenham and Paine was just consistency' date='[b'] Paine was week in week out[/b]

Can't recall if it was in Dell Diamond, but I recall reading that Paine was week in, if at home, but not week out, if playing away from The Dell. Something that drove team mates to despair at times.
