Given all the indications that the club wants to fill the No.5 shirt with a new player, if a signing is made this weekend or early next week, is it too late now to bring him into the side against Leeds?

The Jemal saga hasn't gone on as long as the Cork saga but there are substantial differences and one can imagine Cortese turning away from Jemal if he feels there has been too much prevarication. The reported attempt to land us with a makeweight CB as part of a Puncheon deal didn't excite a lot of fans and perhaps NC felt the same. But the shirt is still unfilled so we have a fertile ground for speculation.

Could it be that Seaborne is currently the first choice alongside Fonte? If so, will he be encouraged by knowing the club want to replace him? Will it make him try harder against Leeds or leave him disillusioned. Despite some technical weaknesses, I've always seem him as a trier but does he have a future here? Jaidi, it seems they felt was worthy of another year but age does mean less reliability. As for Martin, another signing will keep him down the order, so you could ask if he is going to make the grade after 2 years as a Pro, although he is only 21 so time is on his side but also he might still need a bit longer before he could be a regular starter at Championship level.

So where do people think we are going with the left-sided CB slot?

From what I've seen of both Seaborne and Martin, both are competent enough to do a job in that position, and just because we're in a higher league doesn't mean Jaidi won't see his fair share of action.

If it were up to me, I'd keep what we have, see how they get on, and re-evaluate the spot in the January window. If there's a gap that needs plugging, that'd be the time to sort it.

That said I do think we'll see a first choice CB come in before the end of August, the No 5 spot has been left vacant for a reason. Don't forget though, that there's still over a month until the window shuts. It may also be that we're waiting to see if anyone matches Oxo's valuation, which will then leave us with a shed load more dosh to invest that we have now. (I still hope Oxo stays though...)

Could it be that the signing of Jemal is taking longer than that of Cork because there were no visa requirements for Cork? Just a thought.

As to the other defenders that we have at the club, they are professional footballers, some youngsters, some at the end of their careers. But they ought to understand that a club with ambitions will have cover for all positions and that if they are good enough, or because of injuries or suspensions, they will get a shot at playing at one stage or another. They have the incentive that if they perform well and the club realises its ambitions, they could be playing in the Premiership. If they don't make the grade, so what? Should we shed any tears over it?

I can't really see any serious offer coming in for him as long as he's crocked, so it depends whether he "recovers" before the end of August

Mark Chamberlain obviously hopes he will

I think that's likely the case RE: visas and complications.

It would clearly be beneficial to get somebody like Jemal in, but come on, it'd hardly be a total disaster if we start the season with what we already have. My biggest question mark is over who Adkins will have as his first choice to partner Fonte.

Adkins' recent comments on Solent have been clear: 1 more definitely coming in & hopeful of another. To be so certain that someone is definitely going to sign it must be that the deal is complete pending something bureaucratic, which does tend to suggest a deal for Jemal. Visa or paperwork to be completed by the Swiss FA maybe? The media were reporting we've been offered Gorkss for Puncheon and, as that's gone quiet, it doesn't look like we've snapped QPR's hands off there, which again suggests Jemal, if we're in the market for a CB.

Really...I didn't see many people saying they would be unhappy with Gorkss

Depends on who you talk to, Ron. Saints fans in the pub I was in included a couple of people who thought Gorkss was better than what we have but most felt the club should choose the best CB available and not limit their choice to a club that happened to want one of our players.

There's also the contention that we made an approach for Gorkks a couple of months ago but were rebuffed.

Whether he was offered to us or not is irrelevant; for this stadard he is a top player and we'd be crazy not to take him, unless we have someone even better lined up instead.

I think beggars cannot be choosers really...we are not the big fish in this league that some thought we were in League 1.

The only downside I have heard of about Gorkss is his pace but that is counter acted by the way we play anyway most weeks

as we defend deep with holding midfielders like Hammond, Cork and Morgan sat so deep.

Originally we were talking about covering CB by early June, then mid June, then end of June, then July 1st then mid july, then end of July, then early August then start of season, NOW end of August, or even January.....shouldn't this have been done earlier ?

This is a vital position and it remains to be seen how our defence holds up. Hope we are not too desperate in January.

I think you need some new material. You started off badly, this is just poor.

Nope,Jemal was not even in the squad versus Westerlo yesterday....and not in the official Young Boys squad 2011-2012 picture either.....and he has not played or been in squad in either of their first two league games either.....he is certainly leaving Young Boys...just hope hes coming to Saints.

Why is everyone so confident we're in for this Jemmal character?

and why are most people so confident that Jemmal is the answer to our problems ?*

My understanding is that he only played about 30 games in his one season for YB, and has a disciplinary record that Mark Dennis,Jim Steele and Brian O'Neil combined would be proud of.(Okay, answered my own question as to why we want him - back to the Alehouse days !).

* as opposed to Gorkks who is proven at Championship level

Excellent point well made. I've never heard of him, or have any idea how good he is. Gorks know's what the championship is about - on that basis, I'd bite QPR's hand off for that deal (especially if we're getting a reported £500k cash payment as well).

It's more about potential isn't it? There's no evidence to suggest that Jemal wouldn't be able to adapt to the English football or the Championship and if he does, there's a far longer career ahead of him than Gorkss has left. Anyway let's not get ahead of ourselves - I'd quite happily accept either into the squad!

I think what people are forgetting is that a lot of scouting and reseraching has been done in order to choose Jemmal. He has been linked with some big clubs and is obviously a good player. We are clearly after a left footed centre half to compliment Fonte and one which can play from the back is the requirement.

Does anyone know how long work permits take to come through?

The thing is we don't really know we've been offered Gorkss. More likely we asked for Gorkss in return for Puncheon and QPR said no way Jose.

It's been reported in the media from various sources, including national newspapers.

Suppose this begs the question should we believe everything we read? We know very little, at the end of the day.

There's no evidence to suggest that he would, either. Jemal would be a "punt", just like Steve De Ridder is, effectively.

how do you know they have chosen jemal? how do you know it is down to a work permit?

You lot have all speculated that he will sign and now you taking it as gospel!!

I'm willing to trust the club, signings so far this summer have been good, and Jemal as a Tunisia regular who has been linked with Stoke, Fulham and Zenit can't be too bad a player.

Jesus Christ... WHY is everyone talking as if we are going to 100% in for him. We have seen one dodgy foreign article and some messages on facebook from a page claiming to be him.

I don't think anybody's truly taking it as gospel. It's a thread of speculation, as many posts are on here (possibly containing a few too many definitive statements, but that generally appears unintentional).

Indeed, but if we're in for Jemal I'd imagine it's a calculated risk. You'd suspect this lad has been scouted to some degree rather than the club going in blind. By the same token the reward against risk could be favourable in the long-run.

But hey, it's all mindless speculation so there's little else worth adding.

I can't tell whether you're being serious, so I'll roll with the assumption that you are.

What are you saying though, that sheer numerosity of signings is the ultimate goal? That the potential quality of our signings will be inversely proportional to the number of days of pre-season left? It doesn't matter a jot when players come or how many they are; rather how they gel with the squad and what they bring to the overall package.

Didn't Adkins say that another signing is all but in the bag? He doesn't seem to speak in definitives without delivering - if I'm remembering his statement correctly then I believe it will happen. Not to mention the possible other he talked about in passing...

Maybe Jemal was on the original list and now Gorkks has been offered its too good to turn down. Any delay for a work permit may well apply to Gorkks as well. Football is a harsh business....moving Seaborne on to make way for both would be perfect!
