2011-2012 Championship Final Table

Recommended Posts

....according to the latest composite odds from the bookies.

  1. West Ham
  2. Leicester
  3. Nottingham Forest
  4. Birmingham
  5. Middlesbrough
  6. Reading
  7. Southampton
  8. Blackpool
  9. Cardiff
  10. Leeds
  11. Brighton
  12. Ipswich
  13. Burnley
  14. Hull City
  15. Portsmouth
  16. Derby
  17. Bristol City
  18. Millwall
  19. Watford
  20. Crystal Palace
  21. Peterborough
  22. Coventry
  23. Barnsley
  24. Doncaster

So, after watching the pre-season performances, my wagers will be:

  • Saints to win the Championship at 16:1, (a la Norwich) - a dead Brazilian
  • Saints to get promoted at 5:1 - a monkey
  • Coterill (second favourite) to be the first manager to get the sack at 6:1 - a pony

I will thus be collecting £2800 at the end of the season, which will easily finance a suitable celebration, at a five star hotel in London, for the weekend....

Don't say you weren't told.

Bookies have birmingham as 4th when they know they are bankrupt and will have to sell key players?

Odds are based on the money the bookies have taken on them from punters since the market opened very early in the summer. Not necessarily the bookies view of the Championship as things stand right now. Sometimes it takes a while for odds to change after events like the news concerning Birmingham's money problems, especially if a lot of money has already been placed on them to win the league and the selling hasn't yet started.

That's why we should be piling into Saints, at the moment....

Personally I don't think Leicester will be top two. Clearly they're spending big and bringing in some top players but I don't know if they will have the consistancy to finish 2nd; they're putting more or less an entirely new team together. Can see them winning some games by massive scores then losing other perceived easier games. They'll be 4th or 5th IMO.

I can't us finnishing that high up. I hope i'm wrong but I can see the team we've got finishing around 15th.

Why do you think the Championship will be so much of a step up? 14 teams better than Saints? Norwich, Leeds and Millwall all finished in the top 8 in their first season after promotion. None of them have the budget Saints do. Saints have outspent the majority of Championship teams since the summer of 2009. Of course money is no guarantee of success, but it helps usually.

Almost, unless you think the bookies opened the market with everyone at 24/1 for promotion? The market is based on a predicted table, with fluctuations taken place determined, in some part, by wagers placed on the teams.

Leicester just signed Michael Johnson' date=' shrewd move![/quote']

Is it though, played 4 games in 2 n half years ? I know he was highly rated when Sven was at City, but he's hardly had much match time. Didn't he get crocked for a few seasons on and off as well?

Can anyone tell me where Leicester got all their money? Are they stable or at risk financially, last time I tuned into them they had Mandaric and he was getting ready for the courts, what have I missed?

Milan Mandaric sold Leicester City in August 2010 and he brought Sheffield Wednesday in December 2010.

Leicester City are now owned by Thai multi millionaire Vichai Raksriaksorn.

I think Ipswich will be a lot higher. They will be the surprise team this year given some of their signings. Leicester should be top given their investment. WHU and Birmingham will be the seasons disappointments - mid table for both haha.

Having said that, i think the Saints prediction is fair - but with a strong wind behind us we could just scrape the playoffs and who knows what would happen then!!

Agreed; Ipswich 12th? They've made some very shrewd signings, particularly Bowyer and Chopra. I'd expect to see them up there challenging.

Mr Guided Missile....methinks a more likely reason we should be piling into 16/1 odds on saints is so that you can lay them at a sufficiently tasty price to book that 5 star hotel and weekend promoted champions or not hehehe.....If youve spotted them £1000 at 16/1 then lay them at 10/1 for £1000 you've got more than enough to drink dom perignon out of your gucci loafers for a weekend...

Rather than back Saints at 5/1 to get promoted, I'd back them each-way at 16/1 for the title

These are 1/4 odds 1st, 2nd, 3rd, meaning we are 4/1 to finish in the top 3

If we finish 2nd you'd have made a bit of money, and have had a good run for your 16/1.

Missing out on 1 point for getting promoted won't seem such a big deal

If we finish 3rd and the bookies have paid you 4/1 for such an achievement, that 5/1 pre-season for promotion looks a terrible price, because that would make us 1/4 favourites to win the play-offs. Most favourites are 2/1 or 9/4

Ok, so we could finish 4th,5th,6th and win the play-offs, but you'd probably get 3/1 in such circumstances at the time anyway, so once again 5/1 looks a rubbish price

I think the point Sam was making is finishing 7th means you just miss out on the play offs which would be frustrating.

Of course, but I'd take the frustration of missing out on the play-offs to get to that position in the first place. Would be a nice 'problem' to have! Would also arguably be easier to consolidate from there than if we struggle to adapt to the Championship.

Based on that list, the value bet absolutely has to be Leeds.

Out of interest where did the bookies place us in the league this time last year ?

We were generally favourites at about 5/1 or 4/1 (i.e. a 20-25% of winning the league)

We were a standard 4/6 to be promoted by any means (i.e. a 60% chance to go up).

The bookies seem to have got it about right, but if anything slightly underestimated Saints.

HTH.

Did you actually do these bets? Who was the 1st Championship manager to get sacked? Coterill wasn't far off.

Apart from Forest then this table ain't too far off. The odds on Saints are looking great value. Fair play to all who backed 'em.

If Saints do go up then it'll be interesting to see where the bookies place us to finish in the Prem. The handicap bet could be very attractive.

I'm getting quite excited, TBF. £2625, if we stay where we are, should provide a weekend to remember for me and a cheap hooker....
