Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 Well, it's getting to that time of year again when we all rush to certain websites/papers to see how they rate our chances for next season. Perhaps it is sensible to have a thread to contain them all. Here is the first: http://footballblog.co.uk/championship-201112-preview-west-ham-return-top-flight-attempt.html

CWD Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 That seems fair to me, although I think Leicester will win it. Out of interest, why have they used the full name for every team, then referred to the blue few by their nickname?

The9 Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 That seems fair to me, although I think Leicester will win it. Out of interest, why have they used the full name for every team, then referred to the blue few by their nickname? Because FourFourTwo are maddeningly inconsistent. Seems fairly feasible to me as well, Watford in particular had an appalling run from February and have lost Mackay to Cardiff. I think that's the table I'd have gone with about a month ago, and that we're higher now. Can't see Boro being that high though.

Huntingdon Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 Apart from Peterborough, the bottom 6 are all absolutely skint, so no surprises with those predictions However, Birmingham's situation changes that picture somewhat I also think we have stronger squads than Ipswich and Burnley, so perhaps a play-off place isn't beyond us
Doctoroncall Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 Boro had a good finish to the season, have they signed any decent players this pre-season? Also fifth place for Birmingham may change if they have to off load players due to finance problems.
Colinjb Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 Here's my own prediction. 1. West ham 2. Leicester ------------ 3. Cardiff 4. Middlesborough 5. Nottingham Forest 6. Leeds ------------ 7. Saints 8. Hull 9. Reading 10. Blackpool 11. Burnley 12. Millwall 13. Birmingham 14. Portsmouth 15. Barnsley 16. Ipswich 17. Derby 18. Doncaster 19. Brighton 20. Crystal Palace 21. Watford ---------------- 22. Bristol City 23. Coventry City 24. Peterborough Worked out using a predictive formula coupled with my own judgement on how strong each club is in four key areas, namely: First 11 strength Squad Depth Team Stability and Manager Ability
itchen_dan Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 I think we'll finish between 12th - 8th. Don't think Reading will be up there this year. Can see them doing the same as Swindon did last year. Cant see past Leicester & West Ham being in the top 2. My dark horse this year is Ipswich. Made some quality signings over the summer (Chopra, Stockdale, Emmanuel-Thomas, Inginmarsson). To go up:- !. West Ham (Winners) 2. Leicester (Runners Up) 3. Ipswich (Play Off Winners) To go down: 1. Peterborough 2. Coventry 3. Crystal Palace

Anywhere between 3rd and 10th IMO. Not sure Leeds will finish that high either, doesn't sound like a very happy place up there at the moment

S-Clarke Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 There was one key factor behind them being that low. Paul Jewell. Alot of Ipswich fans blame Keane for their season last year, and the squad he left behind. So it'll be interesting to see how Jewell does with his own squad and his own pre-season. SNSUN Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 Of the relegated sides, I can see only West Ham being close or at the top come the end of the season. Blackpool will re-establish themselves as average Championship fodder with a late play-off push perhaps, but Birmingham will crumble. (Though judging from Pompey's showing last season, may not go down.) Of the promoted sides, we will do the best, a play off push isn't beyond us, Brighton will start well but ultimately struggle, and Peterborough will wave goodbye to the Championship on their way to League One again. Suprise teams of the year to do well? Crystal Palace and Hull. Teams that will underachieve (Perhaps massively) Watford, Burnley and Derby. The auto spots will be fought by Middlesbrough, West Ham and Leicester, the relegation spots could be Portsmouth, Watford and Peterborough. There seems to be a big gulf in class in this league this season, and as long as we attach ourselves to the top teams, we'll do fine - it is my prediction that there will be a massive gap in points between two adjacent mid-table teams come May. Elmore Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 There was one key factor behind them being that low. Paul Jewell. I read on an Ipswich forum that their form since Jewell took over would of seen them third. Can't find the link now, but this article supports the point. Ipswich will be top 4 imo. They just needed a consistent goalscorer which they now have. http://www.greenun24.co.uk/ipswich-town/the_axe_was_wielded_too_late_at_town_1_854396

Well I said back in May that we would not be making lots of high profile signings only to be shouted down by the mob ! Who, incidentally assured me that it would happen at the end of June, then the 1st of July and then the middle of july and then the end of July etc. So, who, is looking silly now ! Saint Fan CaM Posted 28 July, 2011 Share Posted 28 July, 2011 Mmm, this season is going to be a very tough call. There will be some big surprises at both ends of the table I feel. We could have a good but not spectacular season and finish between 8th and 15th with the squad. Sign a top CB who really connects with Fonte and you can notch that up 4 places though. It is still early into the transfer window (in the times when high proportion of signings are done) and it looks like we have signed two excellent midfielders. Sure the team could always be improved but when you have the real possibility that these players won't make our first 11 we aren't too badly off! Not starting 11? Bart, Butterfield, Jaidi, Martin, Dickson, Ox-C, Chaplow, Schneiderlin, Holmes, Guly and Barnard! Edited 28 July, 2011 by NickG

My impression is that a 'lot did expect' and they have now changed their tune. One explanation, which is plausible, is they were the vocal minority. Junior Mullet Posted 29 July, 2011 Share Posted 29 July, 2011 The more I look at the teams this year the more I think we are going to finish mid-table. Leicester will be outstanding this year but West Ham may not do as well as people think. Birtmingham will be solid. There will be lots of teams better than ours scrapping it out for a play-off spot. A quality CB and forward really do look needed when you look at the other teams. Is anyone else looking forward to this season more than any other in recent years? I know I am - it's going to be a very good year for the Championship.

A quality CB and forward really do look needed when you look at the other teams. Is anyone else looking forward to this season more than any other in recent years? I know I am - it's going to be a very good year for the Championship. Personally I'm the opposite. The more I look at the teams the more I fancy our chances. Leicester are being incredibly over rated imo. Strikers will get you out of this league, having goal scorers will fly you to the top and looking at Leicester I really am not envious of there striker options. If players like Becchio can come into this league and be one of the better strikers then I fancy our ability to score goals. West Ham have everything except strikers right now. I'm sure they will put that right, as will Leicester by signing a striker soon but until they do that and depending on who they get, I don't think they are going to run away with anything. Forest for me will be a danger. Pretty quiet summer so far but McClaren will have them set up properly and I fancy them to surprise some people. Cardiff have Earnshaw and Miller, two very average strikers imo. Won't be enough goals in them to get them out of trouble. Ipswich and Chopra...better than Cardiff but he hasn't been good enough to fire a team out of this league so far and I see no reason for him to do it now. Bowyer will be a top signing though. As for us...I'm obviously slightly bias but I do look at our players and see goals from everywhere. Lambert, Connolly, Guly, Barnard, Lallana, Chambo (if he stays), De Ridder, Cork, Hammond will get an important couple as will Chaplow and Fonte. Who knows how we will do, but the more I look at teams the more I see us springing a few shocks against some big clubs (In League One we certainly upped our game in the bigger ties) and I certainly don't fear anyone at home. Hopkins Posted 29 July, 2011 Share Posted 29 July, 2011 Oh and I forgot Birmingham. Which pretty much sums them up. Boring squad, boring manager who succeeded with Newcastle because the squad was ridiculous and a boring club. Cameron Jerome ffs. They will struggle. And I thought that at the start of last season and way before any financial mess they have got themselves into this season.

The9 Posted 1 August, 2011 Share Posted 1 August, 2011 I'm assuming Leicester will need about 3-4 months to gel (like Saints do!), unless their 11 randomers turn out to be significantly ahead of everyone else in the league even playing a predictable 4-4-2. Look at us last season, best players, best squad, lost to Rochdale home and away, as much to do with the timing of the matches as anything.
