SuperSAINT Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 Not only that, he had a real end product too. He put some brilliant crosses into the box, one of them I don't know how we didn't score from it...! Loves to win the ball back too, will be a real fans favorite. That was going to be my next post. If he's got the ability to beat players AND get his head up and pick out a player, we could have a real gem on our hands. Wonder if he's the product of our euro scout (if that ever happened). S-Clarke Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 Steve De Ridder was absolutely top, top class. If he keeps up performances like that OxO could be losing his place (if he stays) - he was THAT good. I would say even better technique than Lallana on the wing, but not so sure about his scoring ability at the moment. Could be an all time Saints favourite though. Probably the best debut from a Saints player for MANY years. Probably the best first touch on a debut ever....! Great first touch, three step overs...then all of a sudden he flicks it down the line and bursts away, their defenders were still trying to unknot themselves

Great first touch, three step overs...then all of a sudden he flicks it down the line and bursts away, their defenders were still trying to unknot themselves Absolutely - and how he managed to get some of those balls in from the byline I'll never know - looked like lost causes, but he found the extra inch to squeeze the ball into the box AND at pace!!! I've not been this excited about a new Saints signing for a long time TBH - the price of the ST was worth it just to go back and watch this guy take apart defences in NPC. SaintNeil90 Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 I literally sat there the whole second half wanting our players to just give him the ball. Lets hope he is consistent. If teams have to put two defenders on him then it will open things up for the strikers and Lallana.

trousers Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 Just got back. The best debut performance I've seen in a long while. Mr Adkins now has a very nice selection problem, especially if Chamberlain stays. After watching tonight's game I've gone from being curious as to how our season will pan out to outright excited. I watched him carefully and I dont think he gave the ball away once. If there was no attacking option he played it back to the supporting full back. He looked the dogs wotsits to me, fantastic first appearence. Keep it up Steve.
Johnny Shearer Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 He was good but bear in mind it was a friendly and WBA weren't in full swing. He does have pace though and seems quite tricky. Will definitely give some defenders a torrid time in the championship. Sent from my HTC Desire S using Tapatalk

Saint Fan CaM Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 Did we play a "flat 4" across midfield all match or did we do a diamond or some other variation? Pretty much flat 4 for both halves, but it was the 2nd half that saw the team really come alive IMO. De Ridder and Butterfield looked like they had played together forever. And Chappers and Cork were fantastic also - easily our strongest CM pairing I would say. Hammond for me is fourth choice CM now - cannot see how he will be able to retain the Captains armband frankly - his ball retention and particularly his distribution is not bad, but not quite as good as Cork, Chappers or Morgan. ottery st mary Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 Spiderman will struggle to oust Hammond and Cork or even Chappers.... Morgan will have to buck up his ideas or is he still wanting away....Hope he stays and plays his way back into contention.. Hammond will be the Captain v Leeds... The9 Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 OS says he was class tonight. Was he? Probably the best debut I've ever seen from a Saints Player. Looked like the best player on the pitch by some distance and always a threat. Skilful, quick, beat players, attacked the goal... I still don't know if he can defend, but I no longer care. He was the best of our three wingers tonight.

I don't what we paid for him (£1m?), but on tonights showing he's got to worth £8m at least given his experience in years. Seriously right up there with Chamberlain I would suggest. I think Sneiderlein was our most talented midfielder last season when he wasnt injured. Against Walsall last game of the season he was immense, cutting out passes here, there and everywhere. I think it is Hammond that I would drop. He is too slow and immobile.

Shows a distinct lack of imagination if you ask me, Febreze was a LOT less direct, fewer tricks and not as quick. He's more like a really really amazingly good Neil McCann with some skill and strength.

Toomer Posted 28 July, 2011 Share Posted 28 July, 2011 (edited) Sounds good Toomer - how was the close control when running with the ball? Should have said, looks good on the ball defenders doubled up on him and he turned them inside out a couple of times and always made himself available and looking for the ball. He also seemed to play further upfield than Chamberlain does. Chamberlain prefers to run from deep, which can be quite predictable at times, whereas De Ridder starts deep, darts back, picks up the ball before spinning back and running deep again. Much more unpredictable for the defenders to track him I reckon. Impressed.

Saint Fan CaM Posted 28 July, 2011 Share Posted 28 July, 2011 Am I right in saying that Cork mentioned staying in the same hotel room with De Ridder in his interview ? No. He said he'd been his mate for the last couple of weeks, taking him from his hotel into town. The club will have wanted someone to buddy up with him to show him around etc. and make him feel at home and Cork got the duty. Would have thought this would be down to Hammond or Kelvin, but perhaps as they're family men? Or perhaps Cork is staying at the same hotel as him at the moment - that would make more sense? JackFrost Posted 28 July, 2011 Share Posted 28 July, 2011 I could score 13 goals in that league. Kenny Miller left in January and he still finished the leagues top scorer - says it all. I was thinking it was because they are both new players. They were together a lot being chumps during the warm up. I would have thought Cork is staying in a hotel for the moment.
