New Club Record

Right as the countdown has begun, I am hoping that we can at last blow away the club record of 6 straight wins. I believe we have done this twice in the 60's and the early 90s.

Beat Leeds and it will be 7 straight wins in the league.

I have been following this record since I had a mug in the late 80's that had the 60's record on it and it was out of date within weeks of me getting it. As we had a joint record, and then lost to Forest at home in 7th game (when Matty missed the pen)

Because of this mug I have had a close eye on the record and have often thought 7 straight wins should not be that hard, but it seems for Saints it is. We have now matched the record for the 3rd time when beating Walsall, but can we beat this record as well as beating the first day of the season stumbling block that we seem to have.

It is my prediction that we will start the season with a bang.

7 straight wins, winning live on Sky whilst frightening the living shyte out the rest of the Championship, and beating dirty Leeds to boot, would be a fantastic start.

Oxo to start badly though, he can find his form in September once the window has closed!

Back in (I think) March 1971, I was at Elland Road for the only time, and watched the humiliating 7 - 0 thumping Saints received that day, and believe me, it could have been more. I was staying the weekend in Nottingham with a pal who was a Leeds fan. (Many were in those days - think Man Utd nowadays). To make it worse, we arrived back at his parents home just in time to see Match of the Day! Ever since that day, I have had a dream of Saints reversing the scoreline, complete with the "Oles" from the crowd, and the retention of possession. Every time since, when we have played them, I have obviously been disappointed, even though there have been a few good wins along the way, but one day......

How sweet it would be to create a new record against the Mighty Leeds, and I don't give two hoots about it straddling two seasons!

I remember going to dirty Leeds when they were flying and winning 3-1 with 2 own goals and a penalty (tbf one of the og would have gone in anyway)...trouble is that used our luck up for the next 30+ years.

Looking forward to this season immensely though...we seem to have a good blend of continuity, cover and fresh quality in our squad and a sense of purpose coupled with a team spirit to go with it.

No rash predictions but if we can develop our playing style along the lines it has been going and steer clear of injuries to key player we could be knocking on the door of promotion. Beating Leeds will be a wonderful start whatever the record books say!

We also haven't won on the first day of the season for years :(

Time to change that then. I thought we would win our first game last season, but didn't know about the unrest in the camp or the pathetic attempt at a pre-season. This time around, we have a manager that is being backed and who is an ex-physio so knows better than anyone how to get his players into shape, we have just been promoted and are on a high, we have strenghthened an already good squad, and are at home and on Sky to boot. Oh, and Leeds have a striker shortage.

For me, and I'm probably wrong, all the signs seem to point to us winning.

We will get 5 points from the first five games, the Leeds game is a nailed on draw 0-0 or 1-1.

Was the mug the thick and thin red stripes by any chance?

No it was black and had the Saint stick figure on it. I had this mug for years until my wife broke it!! It sums up Saints that we can only win 6 on the spin and also we had to put it on a mug!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

What a great day, I have never remembered such a great start to the season since that 4-0 win over West Ham. I have celebrated and will have my tea made for me tomorrow by my ***** of a Leeds fan, and then we move on. What team will turn out against Barnsley? Could it be 8 in a row??
