georgeweahscousin Posted 26 July, 2011 Posted 26 July, 2011 Got an e-mail form Tim Rohn, sports/football journalist from top German paper Bild, who was at the tournament on Saturday. He was genuinely impressed with our club. http://georgeweahscousin.com/2011/07/26/atletic-bilbao-take-first-markus-liebherr-memorial-cup/
JustMike Posted 26 July, 2011 Posted 26 July, 2011 nice words, good to see the club in a positive light

Interesting that he thought it was a decent size crowd.

You might want to respell At(h)letic in your blog title and also rethink your views on Mrs Thatcher though.
Golden Balls Posted 26 July, 2011 Posted 26 July, 2011 Realy good to hear. Hopefully he does come back over. If he thought that was a great atmosphere, imagine what he'd make of the derby games.
trousers Posted 26 July, 2011 Posted 26 July, 2011 also rethink your views on Mrs Thatcher though. Nowt wrong with being a Thatcherite... ;-)

I am the grandson of a Tory councillor, unlikely to happen

Minsk Posted 26 July, 2011 Posted 26 July, 2011 Nice that he wants to come back and watch Saints. Thanks for sharing.
VectisSaint Posted 26 July, 2011 Posted 26 July, 2011 Nowt wrong with being a Thatcherite... ;-) In the same way as nowt wrong with being a Skate ;-) Being a Thatcherite and IW Independence Activist is an interesting, completely incompatible, combination. One of the main reasons for the start of Vectis nationalism was the Tory party and its desire to amalgamate with Hampshire. Still, should not be discussing politics. Nice blog apart from that though.
Micky Posted 26 July, 2011 Posted 26 July, 2011 (edited) I am pretty sure Athletic is right! I am the grandson of a Tory councillor, unlikely to happen I think you'll find that FF is referring to this: quote So it meant that the final game between Saints and Atletico would be a “winner takes all” encounter. unquote Edit: Sorry, good piece btw, enjoyed reading it. Being as I work in Germany most months and see a fair bit of their football on the box - I can appreciate what Tim says. That said - there are some stunningly atmospheric games in the Bundesleague. Neither were meant to be taken particularly seriously! My need for the IW to be independent goes way beyond Mrs. T and the fact that it was illegally sold to the British crown in the first place.... Circa the 15th century....
wireframebox Posted 26 July, 2011 Posted 26 July, 2011 http://www.xn--timrhn-zxa.de/ Err... is that Carsten Jancker he's interviewing in the first photo?...
EBS1980 Posted 27 July, 2011 Posted 27 July, 2011 Nice feedback. Should forward onto the club, if not done so already
disintegration87 Posted 27 July, 2011 Posted 27 July, 2011 I work in Frankfurt, my colleagues were quite taken a back after I told them the score gegen Bremen.... one of my best mates here is a Bremen fan.... funny havent heard from him since Friday.
hughieslastminutegoal Posted 27 July, 2011 Posted 27 July, 2011 Nowt wrong with being a Thatcherite... ;-) Nowt wrong with your sentence........... if it finishes with ...'that a course of intensive psychoanalysis can't put right'
Seany S Posted 27 July, 2011 Posted 27 July, 2011 I see that Aaron Hunt was in the starting lineup for Bremen, have heard good things about him, how did he play? I believe he could have qualified for England much like Owen Crockgreaves, but decided to play for Germany.

However, Bild is like a Sun/Daily Star hybrid. It's the most sold daily, but it's certainly not a credible paper in Germany.

Thedelldays Posted 27 July, 2011 Posted 27 July, 2011 Surprised they never commented on our marketing to be honest.
Durleyfos Posted 27 July, 2011 Posted 27 July, 2011 Surprised they never commented on our marketing to be honest. Or the lack of replica socks.

Midfield_General Posted 27 July, 2011 Posted 27 July, 2011 A valid point, but some of the top English football hacks work for the tabloids here! And Bild has the sixth highest circulation of any newspaper in the world.
Eastcowzer Posted 27 July, 2011 Posted 27 July, 2011 I am pretty sure Athletic is right! I am the grandson of a Tory councillor, unlikely to happen Athletic is correct as the team was founded by 'ex-pat's at the start of the last century.
Deano6 Posted 27 July, 2011 Posted 27 July, 2011 He said title... That one is spelt wrong..... It's in the URL.
Verbal Posted 27 July, 2011 Posted 27 July, 2011 Athletic is correct as the team was founded by 'ex-pat's at the start of the last century. But we've already been told it's NOT 'Athletic' and it's not "Bilbao' either. In fact nothing that would describe a city or a football club at all. I'm not sure it's even permissible to pronounce the name in Klingon.
Sour Mash Posted 27 July, 2011 Posted 27 July, 2011 Good little write up here as well http://www.wsc.co.uk/content/view/7443/38/
The9 Posted 27 July, 2011 Posted 27 July, 2011 (edited) I see that Aaron Hunt was in the starting lineup for Bremen, have heard good things about him, how did he play? I believe he could have qualified for England much like Owen Crockgreaves, but decided to play for Germany. I was watching him pretty closely due to the weird way Werder have used him previously (in the Champions League against Spurs as a sub in the middle http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/09/15/werder-bremen-2-2-tottenham-tactics/, and here on the right http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/09/27/werder-bremen-3-2-hamburg-tactics/ but most of all in this match where he provided the entire argument that a wide midfielder can play in the hole http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/08/19/werder-bremen-3-1-sampdoria/ ) but he was pretty quiet - they did some vaguely interesting things with him pushing into the front line and the 2 central strikers going wide, but that was about all of note as Saints mostly had the ball at the other end. He played in both matches, didn't do much in the second one either... Edited 27 July, 2011 by The9

waggy Posted 27 July, 2011 Posted 27 July, 2011 good article, maybe he can spread the word and boost our euro support in Deutschland. Sudhampton, Sudhampton uber alles! VIVA maggie!!!!

Always kept an eye out for him for some strange reason, also his Wiki profile pic makes him look like Mark Lanegan.
jam Posted 28 July, 2011 Posted 28 July, 2011 Agree on that. The ridiculous policies and governing incompetence of Labour leaves you with none..... Minimum wage, investing in schools and hospitals. I don't know what they're thinking.
