georgeweahscousin Posted 26 July, 2011 Share Posted 26 July, 2011 Got an e-mail form Tim Rohn, sports/football journalist from top German paper Bild, who was at the tournament on Saturday. One of the main reasons for the start of Vectis nationalism was the Tory party and its desire to amalgamate with Hampshire. Still, should not be discussing politics. Nice blog apart from that though. Being as I work in Germany most months and see a fair bit of their football on the box - I can appreciate what Tim says. That said - there are some stunningly atmospheric games in the Bundesleague. Neither were meant to be taken particularly seriously! My need for the IW to be independent goes way beyond Mrs. T and the fact that it was illegally sold to the British crown in the first place.... However, Bild is like a Sun/Daily Star hybrid. It's the most sold daily, but it's certainly not a credible paper in Germany.

Verbal Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 Athletic is correct as the team was founded by 'ex-pat's at the start of the last century. But we've already been told it's NOT 'Athletic' and it's not "Bilbao' either. In fact nothing that would describe a city or a football club at all. I'm not sure it's even permissible to pronounce the name in Klingon.

The9 Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 (edited) I see that Aaron Hunt was in the starting lineup for Bremen, have heard good things about him, how did he play? I believe he could have qualified for England much like Owen Crockgreaves, but decided to play for Germany. I was watching him pretty closely due to the weird way Werder have used him previously (in the Champions League against Spurs as a sub in the middle http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/09/15/werder-bremen-2-2-tottenham-tactics/, and here on the right http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/09/27/werder-bremen-3-2-hamburg-tactics/ but most of all in this match where he provided the entire argument that a wide midfielder can play in the hole http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/08/19/werder-bremen-3-1-sampdoria/ ) but he was pretty quiet - they did some vaguely interesting things with him pushing into the front line and the 2 central strikers going wide, but that was about all of note as Saints mostly had the ball at the other end. He played in both matches, didn't do much in the second one either... Edited 27 July, 2011 by The9
