More Saints than home fans?

I know Dellhurst was one and the promotion trips to Orient were ? Has there been any other time when we have outnumbered the home fans or come close?

I am sure it never happened to us at the Dell?

In 1974 we played man u in a near end of season relegation battle (both of us went down that year) the game was not all ticket, man u fans must have come close to outnumbering us that day, it's the only time I can remembering that happening

Luton away in our last promotion from 2nd Tier to Top Tier near the end of the season seemed that way.

Mind you we passed loads of coaches heading out of Luton going to Wembley for The Non League version of The FA Cup Final. (FA Vase?) A local team from the Luton Area were playing in The Final.

Fulham away 1978, Friday night fixture towards the end of the season.

I remember that one - it was April and I was freezing, the wind was blowing in from the Thames and we drew 0-0. Nothing to cheer at all. Not been to Craven Cottage since!

The Rangers game was 2 legs in The pre-season Texaco Cup (previously known as Anglo-Scottish). Totally outnumbered at The Dell (large contingent of locally based Scottish dock workers) but we still won 2-0. We then won 3-1 at Ibrox - Channon, Osgood and O'Neil scored.

Think we outnumbered them 3 to 1 at Ibrox (that bit might be a lie)!!

Went to that game as well. Blue Star I think was the name of the team.

I was going to say Luton away in 1978 also, i was there. What about Orient 1966 and Orient in 1978? I wasn't at either but i know that there were bloody thousands of Saints fans at both. Both ended 1-1 and Saints clinched promotion on both occasions.

Barton Rovers rings a bell for the team at Wembley. I'd say we outnumbered Luton three or four to one that day

Bristol Rovers away in the FA Cup 3rd round (1978 or 1979) must have been close. We lost 2-0 and a pitch invasion at the end of the match.

Pitch invasion was before the match and was mainly them, not that Saints weren't trying to join them and the attendance was well over 26K and probably all ticket so unlikely our numbers got anywhere near theirs.

British Rail Football Specials....happy days!

Could it be the George Horsfall testimonial in '82? I may have been young but it seemed like a lot there?

That was it, I think they had 2,500 there out of a crowd of about 6-7000, , They seemed a good bunch of blokes to me, mind you being an unemployed teenager and getting free beer from a load of jocks ,what do you expect?

I'm pretty sure that we didn't have more at Orient than Orient did last season.

Yup, 7714 and we had 3209 of them, that's not even close to half. There may have been some Saints in the home end, but how are you going to prove how many, and nearly 800 of them ?

I did go with a Man U fan as I did with the same one two years later at Wembley for the Cup final.

Seeing him after the game I knew what sick as a Parrott meant

I couldn't go last season but the year before there were a stupid amount of Saints in the home stands. I recall us singing " We've got more fans than you" then when the attendance was read out and the Orient fans worked out that our allocation was not sufficient for us to outnumber them they sang it back to us, to which we replied "There's loads of u's sat with you, we've got more fans than you."

Cracking away day.

I was at the Man U game in 74. Nearly 31000. They took over the Milton and half the Archers. Not quite half the ground but there were loads of them. Gates shut just after 2pm. Also at Orient in 78. Definitely more than half the ground were Saints that day. Arrived late and a copper directed us to the main stand, as the Saints side of the ground was rammed.
