saints-cris Posted 26 July, 2011 Share Posted 26 July, 2011 Would be exactly what we need IMO. Can't say I've seen him play much, but he was a starting CB in a team that got promoted, so must be fairly decent !
itchen_dan Posted 26 July, 2011 Share Posted 26 July, 2011 Might be something in this story... A little observation - Gorkss squad number at QPR is #13 and we have #13 available in our squad list.

Professor Posted 26 July, 2011 Share Posted 26 July, 2011 Shame that Dan Seaborne doesn't seem to have made the grade - definitely out of favour after the mistake at Peterborough, but clearly Adkins has made his assessment. If Jemal is likely to accept the SFC offer, he does look the better prospect, short-term as well as long term. Gorkss wasn't that well appreciated at Blackpool and although he did play regularly for QPR last year, the fact remains that they don't want to keep him. Better than what we have but probably not the best we could get. If QPR want Puncheon we should take their money without having a player foisted on us who we might not otherwise have been interested in.

Psycrow Posted 26 July, 2011 Share Posted 26 July, 2011 Gorkss is great in the air but a bit slow. Hes also a bleeder so get used to the headbands, he split his head open from eyebrow to hairline in a meaningless game and put bandage on and finished it. That's the way a centre back should be! We'll take some of that!

QPR had to up their bid a couple of times to sign him,and I seem to remember the Blackpool chairman publicly saying they want to keep him. As for QPR,they are now of course in the prem, and as such their priorities re squad has changed. As someone else stated they have signed Gabbidon, and with Taarabt (?) leaving Colin W^nker possibly sees Puncheon as a playmaker for them. Gorkss was highly rated when QPR signed him,and he was a frequent name on our HCDAJFU threads for a couple of years.

Saint Fan CaM Posted 26 July, 2011 Share Posted 26 July, 2011 He was sold to QPR for £250k not so long back. Why should we release Puncheon for that amount of money? A player that has NPC and Prem experience in a rich vein of form. Not doubting his ability, but reading between the lines it would appear that he's another player that's finding it difficult to settle at a club. ): No thanks. revolution saint Posted 26 July, 2011 Share Posted 26 July, 2011 Difficult to tell about Gorkss. He sounds like a solid, good champ central defender; good in the air, 100% commitment, not so great against pace and not so good at passing. That's Jaidhi, isn't it? You'd also have to wonder why QPR are keen to offload one of the mainstays of their promotion campaign. That said, I wouldn't be complaing but it doesn't look on the face of it as if he improves the first 11 much.

Not doubting his ability, but reading between the lines it would appear that he's another player that's finding it difficult to settle at a club. ): No thanks. all these "valuations " are only paper figures anyway. The proper price for any player is ...as much as you can get... alternatively ..as much as the buyer is willing to pay. we paid 250K for Punch, and now Cortese is asking 750K . We would make a profit of 500K. Gorkss was bought for 250K.. but is probably amuch improved player since then, so... how much do QPR value him at now ? In the end the only Q. is : would he benefit the side? ..the answer is probably YES. I wouldn't argue too much about it as money is not a problem if we have £3 miilion + available to spend on a striker... The only thing at stake is : somebody's pride. My version : get rid of Punch ASAP and bring in the Latvian for nothing or spend £1 million or so on the Tunisian ... Ewell Posted 26 July, 2011 Share Posted 26 July, 2011 If Adkins wants him then fair enough but if we have never had an interest then take a cash deal only and go and get a player that Adkins actually want's. Miltonaggro Posted 26 July, 2011 Share Posted 26 July, 2011 In his 'Championship Team of the Season So Far' (21 December 2010), Manish Bhashin of Football Focus/MOTD named Gorkss in the 11 and described him in the following terms: "Kaspars Gorkss (QPR): Certainly not a player you'd mess with, Gorkss plays like the proverbial brick wall at the back, but can also offer an option at the other end of the field at set-pieces. Nothing phazes him, he does everything you ask of a defender and is a great communicator on the pitch." At 29, could be just what we need alongside Fonte... No one is saying that though, are they? Some people think that accepting a makeweight that doesn't look like he would obviously improve the first 11 is grounds for debate. Doesn't mean they don't rate him at all, just that it seems strange that QPR would offer such a alledgedly good player plus cash for Puncheon. Not hard to follow that argument is it? Now get off your high horse.

S-Clarke Posted 26 July, 2011 Share Posted 26 July, 2011 I personally think we're foolish to let him go unless we have something better lined up and if he does join he should be one of your star players next year. LatvianTolix Posted 26 July, 2011 Share Posted 26 July, 2011 Gorkss is a player I was advising here for ages (more than 5 years to be precise since his Ventspils times). Excellent defender - tall, powerfull, great header, eye for goal on set-pieces, excellent positioning. Apart from that is well settled in Uk, speaks English very well and enjoying playing British football style. Not the best pace but fantastic tackle force and timing. Take his asap, NA!!!!!!! Would be an excellent business. PS - In addition to that, I would deeply advise to take Artjoms Rudnevs from Lech. Excellent striker, type of Lambert with faster pace and acceleration. whelk Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 The main question is do we want someone who is nearly 30 or someone who is 24 and can improve/stay longer Yeah that is all that matters age, no need to worry about who is the better player just get the youngest

Miltonaggro Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 Yeah that is all that matters age, no need to worry about who is the better player just get the youngest I think with Centre Backs experience really matters. Looking back at some of our best players in that position we signed John McGrath at 30, Chris Nicholl at 31, Dave Watson at 34 and Kenny Monkou at 29. Also, Claus played his best football for us in his late twenties early thirties. The real mystery is why Warnock wants to get rid, as this is a player who seems to have all the right attributes... I didn't expect anyone to take my post so literally as saying we would make a decision purely based on age. I'm suggesting that at the age of 24, Jemal still has a long career ahead of him, meaning he has potential to improve and become a better player. Gorkss on the other hand is 30 in November and most likely at his peak, with maybe a few years left in him. Maybe Gorkss is a better player now, I don't know enough about them to make that judgement, but Jemal may grow to be better than Gorkss is now. After all the club is looking to the future, putting a big emphasis on young players and ones who are willing to play in the Championship but good enough to make the transition to the Premiership. barney_b64 Posted 27 July, 2011 Share Posted 27 July, 2011 My mate who is a Q.P.R. fan really rates Gorkss and doesn't want to see him go, especially for Puncheon. Although that might be largely due to my berating of Puncheon consistently over the last 6 months. Although he is getting on a bit compared to Jemal who we have also been linked with. Personally I do like the looking for younger players system we have been operating, but don't know anything about Jemal. I fully trust Nigel to make the best decision though!
