What we learned today is .......

Cork is not fit enough yet

Chamberlain even when he can't really be arsed is better than everyone else bar Lallana

Jaidi is a liability against better standard of opposition

Holmes isn't an answer for right midfield

Doble is still a long way off

Jonno quick isn't a winger (he can't cross)

And most importantly..... Adam Lallana is the most important player in our team, and without him we look distinctly average.

Saints second eleven where as bad as the first eleven were good, poor distribution, pace and control being the difference. Richardson had a mare and Holmes made his normal contribution to the game 'nowt'

Where is Lambert?

Pretty unfair, it is hard to look good when you dont have the ball. Bilbao were twice the team Bremen were. Would have been interesting seeing the first half team play Bilbao.

Good day, enjoyed the format, we did indeed play some good football in the first game.

Who was the big sub in the second match? Looked like a centre half.

I don't think Richardson had a mare at all, actually along with Martin I thought he was one of our best players.

It was Davis, Schneiderlin and Jaidi that you could say had mares, although the performance was understandable as these players have never played a competitive game together before.

Well from what I saw...

  • Cork looked assured enough, distributed well and linked up nicely with Connolly for the first goal.
  • Oxlade-Chamberlain... The only way you could possibly tell how much he was arsed today came across in his performance - and he gave as much as any of his teammates.
  • I'll give you that point on Jaidi, but he won't be playing week-in, week-out. Plus a 'better standard' than League One is a pretty wide term as most leagues are.
  • The Holmes experiment didn't work today, but did against Biel. Hardly conclusive.
  • Doble didn't really see much of the ball. The delivery wasn't there for him so he had to come deep.
  • Jury's out on Jonno. Still doesn't deserve all of the stick he gets mind.

Amazed at the explicitness of the quoted conclusions from watching our players for a mere 45 minutes against vastly different opposition to that of the Championship.

Agree that Bart looked assured, but he wasn't really tested. Would have been very interesting to see him between the sticks for the second game.

Richardson looked excellent, sharpest I've seen him as a Saints player and very energetic, got forward well and was much more lively and significantly less sluggish than he looked all last season - he also used the ball well, going for return passes instead of just chipping it up to get rid, as he did last season.

He was my Saints man of the tournament actually, for his improvement. Butterfield has plenty to worry about now.

Match report on werder site said werder looked very tired, and never in the game

I saw no lack of energy on their part. I think that it took them 15 minutes to realise that we actually had some players who were every bit as good as theirs. Lallana, AOC and DoPrado were cutting through their defence at will. 3-0 flattered them a bit. I would not be surprised if we got a bid for Lallana from Bremen.

Chamberlain even when he can't really be arsed is better than everyone else bar Lallana Absolutely but disagree about can't be arsed

Jaidi is a liability against better standard of oppositionAgree

Holmes isn't an answer for right midfieldFar too early to make this judgement. It is his first game back against this level of opposition

Doble is still a long way off He's not quite ready yet but the potential is clearly there. A three month loan to a League one or two club could be of huge benefit.

Jonno quick isn't a winger (he can't cross)I thought that he had a decent game

And most importantly..... Adam Lallana is the most important player in our team, and without him we look distinctly average.Abso-bloody-lutely

As above :)

Davis????? He kept the score down.

I was much, much more confident with Bialkowski in goal than Davis.

Why? Bart had a better defence in front of him while Davis actually kept the score down. You can never be certain about these things but Davis made one or two stops that I am not certain that Bart would have made.

What a thoroughly good day. Connolly Oxy and Lallanna looked sharp. Athletico looked like a bunch of schoolboys but they showed how effecient football should be played, minimum effort maximum output. Well played all.

But the Saints Ale is an embarrassment - rebranded Worthington ****e - hang your head in shame SFC, we don't liked to be mugged off!!!

Bialkowski made a couple of good saves as well, whilst also having perfect distribution and claiming almost every ball that was crossed into the box.

Davis fumbled on at least two occasions, only claimed one cross and his kicking was atrocious. I have been a massive Davis fan but for me Bart was by far the superior keeper based on yesterdays performance. That's all i'm saying.

Totally agree, I though Bart looked far better, more commanding, kicking was good and 2 decent saves.

I thought Harding was poor first game but Jaidi(who I loved last season) was shown up a bit today and think it may be one season too far. Schneiderling and Dickson didn't have a good match either.

I thought Richardson looked good, Doble promising but the second side never really got going.

Lallana really was the star, Oxo made 2 of the goals and he looked very good again.

Like the new second kit.

The 'Saints' ale is better than the rubbish we have had before but £3.50 and £6 for pint and a pie is taking the mick a bit.

Perhaps, but on the plus side it tastes a lot better than the other watery sh*te they sell at the ground and it's a full pint...

To be fair any 'ale' that has to be chilled and comes out of a tap rather than a pump is going to suck, but can you really see them installing all of that and luggling kegs between the bars when it runs out? Doesn't really fit with the conveyor belt nature of service so the queues would be even bigger.

Its all a matter opinion I suppose - I actually rate both keepers - but to be fair to Davis the "fumbled" balls would have been hard to hold given the speed at which he had to react and velocity of the ball. He was continuously put under pressure by the errors of the players in front of him while Bart had a relatively easy ride.

Thought Martin had a good game and Chaplow played well in an otherwise poor midfield in the second match. Forte was terrible, but not sure why he was on the left while Holmes was on the right, as they both played badly, I guess it was a failed experiment and they will each play on their prefered wings in future so that they might actually be able to deliver a cross.

And Bart did look excellent - better than Davis on that showing. Good shot stopping and distribution. Jaidi looked just as bad at the start of last season, but managed to become more mobile as the season wore on, not sure he will manage it this year.

Squad numbers don't mean anything. Bilbao played 1-11 both games, irrespective of who was on the pitch and their actual squad numbers. Arguably a weaker team played against us. No Llorente or Ander Herrera for instance.
