Quick anacdote before gushing my pleasure.

Watching the youtube clip on my big monitor, (actually a 50 inch plasma) at work and boss asks what I'm watching.

'Why Frank, i'm watching this feller we have just signed.' and points to the screen.

He sits down, watches for a few minutes and says, 'I don't know about him. Looks a bit pedestrian. You want to be looking to sign that number 11 with the short hair.'

'That is him Frank.' and the final word from my 55 year old Half English, Half Italian ex semi professional footy player of a Framework Manager.

'Sweet.'

I am very please with this signing and hope he comes up to our expectations. I can almost hear the conversation now:

NA ' I would like to replace Puncheon, Mr C.'

NC 'Who do you want?'

NA 'Well, Puncheon really, but without the mercenary attitude and big head'

NC 'Anyone in the Prem or Championship that fits that bill?'

NA 'Not really'

NC (reaching over to his phone) 'Right. I'll get the boys on it right away. Hello, it's the Big Corteze here. release the flying monkeys, send them all over europe with one mission - Find me a Jason Puncheon, or better, who likes buses. Start with doing that search thing on Football Manager 2011, and have a look on Youtube. But I want VALUE FOR MONEY.'

NA 'Thanks for that, boss.'

NC 'No problem. By the way, when you see that Chamberlain, tell him no pocket money this week and he's to go to bed early with no tea.'

This is the era of not signing people for the sake of it, not selling people because we have to, sending out a message to bigger clubs that they aint so big and we aint gonna be pushed around no more, not paying big bucks for moderate players, telling agents where to go, not being held to ranson, sending a message that 'No One is bigger than the club', creating and keeping together a team, and only improving it, not creating a new one. And all this done with a big friendly smile that hides an iron will.

Going by the clips, he looks very good indeed.

Interview with NA on SaintsPlayer and he puts this one down to the scouts which is good to hear. He also says;

"I said at the beginning of the season we would be looking to bring in 2 or 3 new players. Steve is the 2nd and i'm sure the 3rd will be announced VERY soon. As soon as pen is put to paper we will announce it."

No, that was Daniel De Ridder, who was class before his move to the UK.

I thought it was Daniel until I looked at this thread. Was disappointed to see it wasn't Daniel but I'm equally delighted it's Steven!

He is a natural winger, clearly, and he's got the posture of some sort of David Bentley/Arjen Robben/Adel Taraabt hybrid with the way he runs, dribbles and crosses. Would love to know what the fee was...

Now get Dan as well, please!...

Wasn't he at brum? Don't think he ever made his mark there, but he came with some decent European pedigree with him.

This isn't a replacement for Chambo, this is a replacement for N'Guessan who was a replacement for Puncheon etc

He has never played in England. I think you are confusing him with Daniel de Ridder. If Steve's quoted stats are correct he has a fantastic goalscoring record, whereas Danny was an overpaid poser.

The Dutch are saying more than a million euros. At that price he's not here to sit on the bench.

One of the European clubs interested was Utrecht. Enquired about him in June apparently.

"Utrecht are already planning how they will invest the money made from the sale of Strootman and Mertens, identifying four transfer targets on their official website.

The Eredivisie club have confirmed they have made enquiries over Heerenveen midfielder Geert Arend Roorda, ADO Den Haag duo Timothy Derijck and Jens Toornstra and De Graafschap forward Steve de Ridder.

Must have been a good deal too. On the 4th of this month De Graafschap said they wanted to keep him and expected him to stay

De Graafschap are hopeful of keeping Belgian forward Steve De Ridder at the club this summer, according to technical director Leen Looyen.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Dutch side, with Eredivisie rivals AZ Alkmaar and FC Utrecht thought to be chasing his signature.

However, Looyen claims there are no transfers in the offing for De Ridder, who has a year remaining on his current deal.

"I can just see him staying," Looyen told Omroep Gelderland.

Can see him being ahead of Alex in the selection order. If so, not only is that great for Saints as evidence of signing a quality player, but it might also be good for Alex, not just to bring him down to earth but also as an incentive for Alex to develop his ability.

Good signing, very hard worker and very quick but knows how to cross the ball and has a knack for finding the net. Several clubs just under the Dutch top-3 (FC Utrecht & AZ) were supposed to be interested in him so I would consider this quite a coup. Voetbal International in the Netherlands report the fee being just over €1 million. I just wonder if he was signed as a winger or an attacker since he played in a 4-3-3 system at de Graafschap.

He seems to be the sort of player we want, youngish, coming into his prime & with a bit to prove. This is definitely building in a quiet, discreet way for the Prem. Opposite of Leicester. Whether it all comes off remains to be seen, but totally respect the approach.

"Looks good on YouTube" I fear means very little as (like a cinema trailer promoting a film) you just get the best bits rather than the full picture. If you were to master the black arts of the film editors trade I dare say you could probably make any average player look sensational just by the careful selection what is shown.

Nevertheless, all seems well and I'm looking forward to seeing this lad play in the fullness of time. It's obvious we're building a fairly young squad in the main, with more than our fair share of players in (or approaching) the prime of their careers - most of whom are still hungry for success. Not a bad strategy.

I bet Kelvin and Jaidi are starting to feel like 'The Old Man of the Sea' in this company.

I think someone's having a laugh on wikipedia there. If he'd grabbed 58 goals from midfield in 3 seasons I very much doubt he'd be signing for us..

Was going to say! Would have been inconceivable for a player like that to slip under the radar! Nonetheless, I remain excited by this signing. A defender and a striker will now give us squad depth that at least 2/3rds of the league would envy.

Who saw that one coming?

"All credit to Nicola because he has worked really hard behind the scenes to get the deal completed."

Well said, NA, 58 goals in 93 appearances for De Graafschap ain't too dusty, either.

He's scored 12 goals not 58. I guess someone tried to be funny there...

On an other note, I wonder what he thinks about playing monkey on his shirt. :D

In fairness, you do have to have scored several belters before someone can cut them together into a montage. There were four very good long(ish) range finishes in the video, all of which looked measured rather than hit and hope. No amount of careful editing can turn a miss into a goal.

After the times we've had a glass half full approach backed up by some actual action is bloody refreshing. Get a grip Wayman!

Enjoy happy times when they come, analyse the bad when needed. It's not happened yet chap. ;)

Bit of a stretch to believe that just because an unknown Belgian turns up with a box of chocolates. Still if it keeps you hot!

At worst case we have some backup that interested clubs that compete in Europe. I'm happy.

What I like about him (from the youtube videos.....and I know you can't base everything on those!) is his tenacity...never giving up, seems to have a bit strength about him too which IMO will make it easier for him to slot into English football.

Looks like he's got a good touch, decent pace...and I like the fact that he can operate equally as well from either flank by the looks of it. Some of his footwork is quality too...the poor full backs this year. Lallana one side...this guy or Chambo on the other. Good luck!

Assuming we sign Jemal there won't be a striker to follow then?
