Brighton's New Seats

I was there today for a coaching course, it is pretty impressive, was in the function room then spent 45minutes on the pitch, immaculate surface as expected.

It is a very impressive stadium, you've got to give them that. Different than the usual run of the mill and def. stands out as you're driving past!

That's true, but I'm not too impressed with the view from inside.

I've always thought it a big mistake to have grey walls towering up behind the seats (another example being the Ricoh Arena). Looks cold/empty, even when full. Compare it to the complete sea of crowd (when full of course!) you get at St Mary's and other similar stadiums..

It does have one big stand but the others are like this.

I live here and all you hear about from them is how modern and great their stadium is and how our ground has no character and is the same as all the others (eg derby, leicester etc). They will never get the atmosphere we do, not with that design.

Well their fans are saying the acoustics are fantastic and really amplifies the crowd noise. I believe they had only 5 or 6000 in for the first ever game last weekend but they were saying the noise sounded like many more. Whether it was just down to an echo-ie 3/4s empty stadium time will tell but most recent new stadiums have been designed with good acoustics a priority. Cov apparently spent a lot of time and money getting this issue in place for the Ricoh after previous new grounds (like SMS, Riverside, etc.) had missed a trick. St Mary's is great when it's rocking but the atmosphere doesn't carry that well around the stadium generally.

I reckon they'll be a very good atmosphere at Brighton due to the design and the high concrete walls at the back of 3 stands are, I believe, just in preparation for ease of expansion.

Somebody here from work went down there recently to check it out for Trade Shows/Conferences and he said it’s great, something again St Mary’s missed out on. A lot more thought (and money) have gone into Falmer than ever did at SMS.

To be fair, after Withdean any kind of acoustic effect is going to be novel to the 50% of them who haven't seen football anywhere else for 10 years.

I drove past it a fortnight ago, it's in a more industrial area than I was expecting, is really poorly signposted (considering it's right next to the A27 and there's a direct exit into their car park) and the whole thing looks like is on a huge slope where it's been built into the hillside!

I can see that place snarling up the A27 pretty badly around Falmer on match days, 20,000 people, a main road next to it and one car park? They'd better have some Withdean-esque alternative transport methods planned.

They will not get 20,000 even on a good day in the 3rd round of the cup playing Barcelona.

So how many would Saints get in an equivalent fixture?

League 2 77/78 BHA v Saints 33,097 Saints v BHA 24,306

League 1 79/80 BHA v Saints 26,918 Saints v BHA 21,856

80/81 BHA v Saints 23,715 Saints v BHA 22,225

81/82 BHA v Saints 20,977 Saints v BHA 22,305

82/83 BHA v Saints 21,794 Saints v BHA 18,253

This whole acoustics and atmosphere thing is a total farce if you ask me.

If you need to make your stadium sound louder, your fans are doing something wrong.

I went to Withdean a few times. No atmostphere and horrible. You need a roof at least.

A roof is practical for most buildings, I quite agree!

Their stadium looks impressive on the outside but inside? Looks like they've had problems with the contractors and they've walked out halfway through. You'd think with the length of time its taken for them to build the bloody place they'd have at least got it right.

The place has clearly been built with expansion in mind.

Once the corners are filled in with a second tier added to the east stand (giving a less lopsided appearance) - the interior should look pretty smart.

My last post was sarcasm, of course.

I think it's safe to say the reason for the huge amount of season tickets that have been sold is due to the excitement around the new stadium. Whether they'll maintain that level of support in subsequent years remains to be seen.

:scared: Blimey, I dread to think what the Ricoh would be like with poor aucoustics then. I've never been to a stadium with such a poor atmosphere before.

100%Blue&White more like!

That just means Saints are a bigger draw for Brighton fans than Brighton are for Saints fans.

Really? Looks quite rural from these shots. Too 'out-of-town' for my liking.

Probably more to do with fans in it rather than the stadium in this case.

It's something that Coventry absloutely have failed to do since the Ricoh was built. Unless the upwards momentum can be maintained at Falmer they will struggle to maintain the numbers.

Consider what it looks like driving off the right of the picture above on the A27. After passing that estate at the top left of the pic and turning the corner, all you can see is that load of buildings to the left in the picture, then the stadium, then the brown-field area to to the right of the stadium which looks like it's in the process of being developed into a car park or more buildings or something. Everything else around is just A27 and fields for miles.
