Lee Barnard - 3 year deal

Your theory??

It's been said all along that we are only likely to bring in about 3 new players.

Sorry if I don't keep up with every thread and post on here who said we were bringing 3 players?. I haven't expected to see any new signings this summer I wouldn't be surprised if Cork was the only one myself. We seem far more intent on keeping what we've got (which is no bad thing as far as I'm concerened)

I am one of the few who think he is not good enough. I dearly hope to be proved wrong. he was hardly prolific in L1 how he'll cope due to his lack of space in the Championship will be interesting

Quite agree for me he's our weak link. I still hope the club will bring in a new striker as a first choice partner for Lambert. If they do we'll have too many forwards. I was rather hoping Barnard was going to be the one to make way.

Adkins stated at the end of last season that he would only be looking to bring in 2 or 3 new players, something he reiterated after we signed Jack Cork. We have alreadt signed one (Cork); we know there has been a bid made for at least one forward (Sharp) and speculation of another (Maynard); leaving the number 5 shirt unalocated is a very good indication that we will be bringing in a new CB = 3 players.

Adkins also stated that he only wants to bring in players who will improve the team, NOT the squad.

Personally I think this is the right thing to do. I think our squad is pretty good, but does need (a few) additions to it to be able to compete well in the Championship.

I am happy with our goalkeepers and full backs; slighlty concerned about CB, and feel we need a new one; happy with central midfield (now Cork has signed); happy with our wide players, but we would obviously have to find a replacement for AOX IF he leaves; happy that we have kept our best forwards, but feel we should one more - proven at this level - striker for extra options/competition for places.

Aaaah why is it always pace?!

Sorry but all I see now to explain the limitations of every player is damn pace. The obsession is making football decline, ironically rapidly.

Many many players do well without pace and many more will in the future.

AL does not have pace but his footwork and skill do help overcome that liability. LB does not have either and time and again last season the defences could push up and squeeze us as, as they knew he wouldnt out run them.

We are stepping up a level and the defenders are a tad quicker and more accomplished. IMO I see us lacking the goals to make real progress.

I think Barnard will do well in the Championship. If someone like Ormerod can cut it at Prem and Championship level then so can LB. Maybe not as quick as Brett O. but at least matches him in other parts of their games.

Certainly, comparing them both in the cup game last january there was only one winner.

Thing with Barnard is that just his work rate is worth a few goals in the season, he presses defenders into making mistakes, and also he pulls defenders out of position with his movement. I really like Barnard and its good to have someone that works so hard for the team. Especially after watching people like Fuller, John, Rasiak who just wander about disinterested.

well those stats look good, a goal every other appearance for us.

Nothing like massaging the figures to make the stats look good. You should be a politician but not a mathematician.

58 goals in 93 starts ..even allowing for shorter sub. apps. is good.

in fact... anything near 0.5 goals / game is VG.

Look at older stats. even the big scorers rarely do better than 0.33 per game.

yep, the stats do look good, time will tell whether he is up to the higher league. I truly hope he is but I have major doubts.

I have to admit that I have a small question mark on that issue, too.

Now we are talking about "serious" football. Coming up against clubs who have been in the Premiership for a few seasons.

Of course, players come and go but getting goals v. Barnsley or C. Palace... isn't the same as scoring at Birmingham or West Ham.

I know that Barnard looked good scoring last season, but (as for some other players) THIS season may be the turning point in their careers.. Are they potential Premiership class...or did they find their true level LAST SEASON?

I'm pleased for Barnards sake that he has got the security of a 3 year contract extension, but only time will tell if it is a good investment in club terms.

He may well press League 1 defenders into mistakes but whether he'll get the same result from far better players who earn 5 or 6 times as much supposedly because of their greater ability we shall have to wait and see. I think many fans are in for a rude shock about many of their "best players" when we come up against sides like Leeds,Leicester,West Ham etc.

On the other hand you look at people like Grant Holt, Becchio, Simeon Jackson and Beckford none of which looked that great in league one IMO and three of them will be playing in the PL next season.

I am pleased for LB that he has got a new contract and I'm sure that he will contribute for us again this year. My main concern about him, and the thing that I think will let him down more this season, is his first touch. Too often he lets the ball get away from him with a poor first touch and as a result we have to immediately start to chase the ball again. Compare this to most of the other attacking players in the team - RL, AL, AOC, GdP, who all have an excellent first touch and allow us to move the ball quickly and play a neat short passing game. I realise that there is a place for different sorts of players and LB definitely contributes with his goals, but I fear that he will get found out a bit in this league because of his first touch.

Beckford and Holt were great in league 1,

So were Barney and Lambert... that's kind of the point. Why will our strikers who were very good in League 1 not be good enough? when the players I mentioned above were no better than our strikers yet have performed well enough at champ level.
