Lee Barnard - 3 year deal

For a second there on reading the post title I thought he'd been sent down for three years....................

I like Barney glad to see him staying longer, it does reinforce my theory that we're going to try and gain promotion with the current team rather than bringing in much in the way of new players.

Yep, he's out of contract at the end of the season. Same with Hammond. Pretty sure they'll be next on the list.

Morgan is an interesting one. He made positive comments at the end of last season about doing a Norwich this season and I thought a new deal might follow but there were also rumours about him wanting to return to France. We still seem to be linked with CMs despite signing Cork who I would see as an automatic first XI pick so we'd hear something on Morgan's future soon I would think.

Hammond I'd imagine would want to stay - not too far from Sussex, skipper, has won things in last 2 seasons.

We absolutely must get Morgan on a long term deal, should be top priority IMHO

the fact he hasn't signed one does not bode well at all. I am certain he will have been offered a deal last summer.

While I am pleased he has signed he doesn't look that happy about it in the photo does he?

That's cause Lee's proper 'ard, his giving his "I'm going to put three past you" look that he gives opposition defenders.......

well that or he's thinking "Hope I don't go down and **** this right up"

I am one of the few who think he is not good enough. I dearly hope to be proved wrong. he was hardly prolific in L1 how he'll cope due to his lack of space in the Championship will be interesting

Really?

He scored 24 League One goals in 2009/10.

He scored 14 League One goals in 2010/11, in a season hampered by a hernia operation, an ankle injury and a court case. He was also often subbed or came on as a sub reducing game time to score goals.

He was by far our best striker at the start of the season, I thought he was on course for 20+ goals easy. Then all the off field stuff happened, and he got an injury...kind of set him back.

He's a very clever player, not massively pacey (pace really isn't the be all and end all), but his movement is good and so is his touch.

Great news. I'd have him down as our best striker. It's just a shame all the hernia problems disrupted his season, then Guly kept him out the team for a while. We seemed to perform much better with him in the side. I think we only lost 2 games he started last season (Rochdale and Walsall away).

38 League One goals in two seasons is prolific though isn't it?

Especially when you factor in some of the injuries he had, reduced game time (being a sub/being subbed) and a court case hanging over him.

How many league games was that in? I dont get the LB love in, but that is football.

Southend United = League One 65 starts, 15 sub appearances, 35 goals

Southampton = League One 28 starts, 18 sub appearances, 23 goals

In total, 58 goals in 93 League One starts, for a player you said was "hardly prolific at League One level". I think that is a very good record tbh.

I think I'm watching a completely different player to others on here.

Effort is often confused with ability.

I agree. I don't think you are watching the same player either!

He is the blonde forward, had a bandage on his arm for a long time and wears number 9. ;) :p

well those stats look good, a goal every other appearance for us.

Nothing like massaging the figures to make the stats look good. You should be a politician but not a mathematician.

I didn't need to do any massaging Nick. You said he wasn't "prolific at League One level", I showed you he has a very good record.

It looks even better when you factor in that he played for a poor Southend United team, had a hernia operation, hand injury, ankle injury, court case and kept being subbed by Saints around 60/70 minutes in games or coming on for the last 20/30 minutes only. His goal per minutes on pitch ratio is impressive. He is much more than just a hard worker.

Has he recovered from injury yet? He seemed in a pretty bad state when he was stretchered off v Bristol.

He has been training with Saints since the start of July, went to Leicestershire and Switzerland with the team and played against St Gallen in a friendly on Saturday.

What is his goals per minute on the pitch ratio? I'll judge if it's impressive thankyou!

not so much massaging, more falsely reporting seeing as it actually 24 goals in 44 starts (71 games if you include sub appearances).

and 37 goals for Southend in 69 starts and 16 sub appearances.

The Championship is a step up. If we create chances he'll take them. He'll continue to work hard. The only doubt is that lack of pace you might need to really hurt defenders and ensure you take advantage of any mistakes defenders might make. Time will tell, but there is certainly a nagging feeling for me that he just isn't quite dangerous enough (on the field).

Your theory??

It's been said all along that we are only likely to bring in about 3 new players.

Is there a clause in it about not paying his wages if he goes down, I wonder ?

Typical Alps, always looking to find the positive in any situation. ;)

But, what are your thoughts on Barney being a saint for another 3 years.

Personally, I am happy to hear this news.

Unfortunate turn of phrase.....
