EBS1980 Posted 20 July, 2011 Share Posted 20 July, 2011 After the release of the squad numbers I think it's clear the number 5 shirt has been left for a new centre back signing. The question is who..... Personally I haven't a clue. Think we need a powerhouse type rather than a playing centre back.
Badger Posted 20 July, 2011 Share Posted 20 July, 2011 Carlos Puyol or Alan Bennett. Bennett has signed for Cheltenham. Don't know what NC and NA are playing at letting him slip the net.

Lallana's Left Peg Posted 20 July, 2011 Share Posted 20 July, 2011 I agree that the perfect partner for Fonte would be a CB who attacked the ball in the air. Jaidi is good but old, and Martin has promise but there are no guarantees with his performances. I do not know if he is available but someone like Matthew Kilgallon at Sunderland would be good. Experienced in this league, aggressive, rated at this level, and attainable for a club like us if he was willing to spend time on loan at Doncaster last season. Has been made available for transfer by Steve Bruce. Was on about him being a realistic target at the end of last season, but he had a few months at Don caster last season and they hated him - and was dropped from their team in the end. Still think he'd be a good player with some proper games behind him though.

I don't think his time at Middlesbrough was good either judging from the number of appearances he made. When he was at Sheffield United he looked very good and strong. Anyway, someone with his attributes would be ideal as Fonte is a decent sweeper.

Window Cleaner Posted 21 July, 2011 Share Posted 21 July, 2011 No. Who do you think we are? Matthew Le God? ;-) it's a simple matter of perspicacity, you obviously don't study strange photos and reams of print out for a living, looking for patterns or something that wasn't there last time you looked. saintjay77 Posted 21 July, 2011 Share Posted 21 July, 2011 I reckon we have someone. Just a hunch but may be revealed sat. I was thinking about this, if any new signings were going to get some game time on sat they would have to have had some pre-season with someone and be fairly fit. But they would also have to be registered by this Arvo I think? So could a new signing or 2 be announced by Friday? NA seemed pretty confident there would be 1 or 2 more by sat. They won't be playing on sat if we wait to announce them then.

I think it's coincidence that they're alphabetical, as the left back's number ends in 3 and the CB's number ends in 5, plus Connolly's number is as it was last season. However, that would explain the bizarre number swap by Bart and Holmes, though Bart's (2)1 relates to his position too, that just leaves Holmes as an anomaly. Though "after 20" is a pretty unscientific starting point to begin with.

Saint Fan CaM Posted 21 July, 2011 Share Posted 21 July, 2011 Anton Ferdinand would be a good signing for us - can't think of too many other CB's that have his experience that we might realistically capture unless we're looking abroad.

I don't see it important at all but they've definitely been attributed in alphabetical order to players that might or might not be considered first choices.Apart from Lallana (swap 20 for 10) I'd say the "first team" now goes 1-11 and that we'll be getting a new CB very shortly. saintjay77 Posted 21 July, 2011 Share Posted 21 July, 2011 So it will be like Rudi Skacel signing on the pitch then. Yeah it could be of course. I was just thinking if the club want him to get some game time on Sat they will need to have registered him 24 hours before the match or something. How many pre-season games do we have left before the start of the season? After Saturday I mean. A lot can be said for getting your team together early and giving them a good pre-season to gel n all that. The later the signings come in the more team tinkering goes on in important matches. So could we get a surprise announcement before Sat or will it be a pitch signing?
