1976_Child Posted 20 July, 2011 Posted 20 July, 2011 Are there any openly gay professional footballers playing in England at the moment? There was that welsh rugby player who came out the other day, just wondered if any footballers had plucked up the courage. Statistically there must be a few across all divisions.
Smirking_Saint Posted 20 July, 2011 Posted 20 July, 2011 Locked Purely because the mods get a bit twitchy due to anything that could remotely be offensive to anyone, anywhere, ever
1976_Child Posted 20 July, 2011 Author Posted 20 July, 2011 Locked Purely because the mods get a bit twitchy due to anything that could remotely be offensive to anyone, anywhere, ever I am being quite serious. I want to know. Not asking for speculation or heresay, just are there any genuinely openly gay players? If a welsh rugby player can come out why not a footballer?
Micky Posted 20 July, 2011 Posted 20 July, 2011 (edited) Not really aware of any in England, but it was pretty widespread news when Anton Hysen recently announced that he was: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/timfranks/2011/03/a_mans_game.html http://www.thelocal.se/32512/20110310/ Given that was a continental player, any English player coming out would probably be well publicised. LGTL Posted 20 July, 2011 Posted 20 July, 2011 Who do we send the link to? You'd have young Matt executed no doubt?
mack rill Posted 20 July, 2011 Posted 20 July, 2011 All of the pompey squad Dyslexic son? Pompey players are all Strays, not ghays
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 20 July, 2011 Posted 20 July, 2011 As far as I'm aware the only player to ever officially 'come out' was Justin Fashanu. Incidently, according to Wiki, he made 9 appearances for us on loan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Fashanu
Hatch Posted 20 July, 2011 Posted 20 July, 2011 oh and of course, Le Saux reads the Guardian, so by association, he must be gay. If you disregard his wife and other attempts to cover it up.
Huffton Posted 20 July, 2011 Posted 20 July, 2011 You'd have young Matt executed no doubt? I would. Nothing to do with his sexuality, but because he's a dirty ex-skate bastard who blatantly handballed the ball in our area and tried to say he didn't. Bastard.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 21 July, 2011 Posted 21 July, 2011 Sol Campbell? Defo (alledegdly), my mate works in the media, story was going to come out around the time of his "half time walkout" at Arsenal. Story got pulled at the last min on advice of lawyers, at least that's what my mate told me.Dont suppose it'll ever come out in the present climate. I know he's married, but so was Elton John...........
Hatch Posted 21 July, 2011 Posted 21 July, 2011 I saw Sol Campbell the other day, he was driving a Vauxhall Cavalier. Odd.
Crab Lungs Posted 21 July, 2011 Posted 21 July, 2011 The only top-level professional sportsman I can think of in recent times to have come out is Steven Davies, Surrey and England wicketkeeper. Thankfully, cricket isn't a hotbed of knuckle-dragging homophobia so apart from a few sledges and wisecracks, I doubt he'll get much stick, so to speak. I'll always remember this slightly cringeworthy Ian Bell interview though; http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/9409211.stm
Dimond Geezer Posted 21 July, 2011 Posted 21 July, 2011 Two rugby players spring to mind, the first is Ian Roberts, an Aussie League player & the others is Gareth Thomas ex welsh Union Captain.
saint francis Posted 21 July, 2011 Posted 21 July, 2011 Homosexuals have been, for many years, denied football league access, for fear of unfair advantage as it is well known that openly gay players are given more space on the pitch during free kicks, as the behaviour of opposing players standing too close might be considered 'flirty' by their team mates.
saint francis Posted 21 July, 2011 Posted 21 July, 2011 During corners, the gay striker will have the freedom to roam around the box unimpeded as defenders would prefer not to put their arms around their shoulders, for fear that photos taken might be misconstrued and sold to the press. Perhaps Viz could devote a corner to it?
