Giving Chamberlain the number 11 either implies he will be staying or if he's sold, that number would be left vacant for a potential new striker, maybe???

I reckon one of Adkins' main priorities is a CB looking at the squad numbers. Perhaps we've already got someone...

Wouldn't have thought Dickson is that upset, after all 5 is traditionally a CB's number. Hopefully this confirms that we are looking for a new Centre half, and 13 would be an extra attacking player to some extent, in all probability a striker.

No puncheon, was to be expected, he quite obviously has no part in moving forward on the Adkins bus

Wouldn't 13 normally be a keeper? Although I've a feeling a lot of squads keep that number vacant because of superstitious reasons.

Footballers are a suspicious lot, many avoid 13. Some sub keepers seem to like having a the traditional keeper number "1" in the number, hence Bialkowski with 21 and Forecast with 31.

Nige's preferred starting eleven seems apparent from this list!

Chaplow and Seaborne seem to have fallen rather in the pecking order and perhaps Hammond too as the captain may have expected a single digit number. Not sure what Dickson's number means in regard to his status.

Nice to see JWP as a part of the first team group. Also Ben Reeves who may feature a bit this season.

I would imagine Dickson chose 23, what with it being Beckham and Michael Jordan etc. Makes more sense than him having 5, and also it has a 3 at the end reflecting that he's a left back - like Seaborne now has 25 as he's a CB. I wonder if the same goes for Forte getting 17 as a kind of wide man back up number. I reckon Adkins is one of those for whom numbers actually matter, he likes a bit of structure and form...

The really weird bit for me is Bart and Lee Holmes swapping numbers. Bart seems to be on a tour of every number we have, I think he's now had 13, 21, 24 and 28 at the very least. Not sure he's ever had 1 though - unless he was maybe number 1 between Jones leaving and Kelvin signing, when Niemi was 14 ?

I hadn't even noticed Puncheon didn't have a number (or Mills) and was struggling to think what number Guly had last season for a couple of moments.

Who has changed numbers this season apart from Dickson and AOC?

Dickson 5 to 23

Cork new 8

Forte 8 to 17

Puncheon 10 to big fat 0

Guly 11 to 10

Martin 17 to 16

Mills 18 to nowhere

Seaborne 19 to 25

Forecast 23 to 31

Bart 24 to 21

Oxlade-Chamberlain 26 to 11

Chaplow 30 to 18

Ward-Prowse new 30

Reeves 38 to 28

much as the OS would like you not to believe it, pretty sure Jack Stephens was in last season's programme as 32 towards the end of the season.

Disappearing as they've left :

N'Guessan was 31

Dale Stephens was 33

Pulis was 34

There may be others at the high end, e.g Tafazolli had a number last season.

Chaplow was number 30 last season, how is being #18 "falling" ?

I can only reiterate what others have said:

very promising to see Chamberlain get the number 11 - a good indication that he is staying

vacant number 5 - hopefully a sign that we have a new CB coming in

obviously no numbers for Puncheon (good) and Fish (bit of a shame) mean they will be far from SMS come the season's start

Adam obviously wanted to retain his number 20, just as he chose to do last season

Nice to see a RB with number 2; a LB with number 3; CB with 6, 15 & 16; attacking players with 7, 11 & 10; midfielders with 4 & 8; and a striker with 9.

All sensible squad numbers for a change.

Happy with that!!!

Isn't 13v usually a goal keeper?

get rid of forte

Bit harsh isn't it? What's he done wrong exactly?

I think he's a good player to have around the squad, I doubt he'll start many games but having the option to use his pace from the bench against tiring defenders is priceless.

Would have been nice to see Lallana take the number 8 shirt, I assume it's his choice to keep 20 though. I'm sure Cork will do it justice.

Yep it's Lallana's choice. He likes to keep the same number so that the kids with his name on the back don't have to keep changing etc. More thoughtful than most footballers would be!

I've just never liked him as a player. I just feel that if we signed him he would be rubbish again.

We signed him in January. When you say he'd be rubbish again, when was he rubbish before? Never liked him as a player? He's been with us six months - did you not like him before that, or just since then?

Is a man not allowed an opinion nowadays without it being jumped upon at every hurdle?

Here's the post I responded to:

Here's my response:

You quote this post and ask:

Is a man not allowed an opinion nowadays without it being jumped upon at every hurdle?

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. If you choose to express that opinion in a public place, such as an internet forum, you have to live with the possibility that others may question it or disagree with it. I did the former on this occasion, as the initial post puzzled me. Here's why, though I've already done this once:

We signed Forte in January, so why make suppositions about "if we signed him" when we've already done so? How can he be "rubbish again" exactly? Has he shown himself to be rubbish already in the few minutes he's had on the pitch for us? And how can you say you've never liked a particular player when that player has had so little playing time?

Now I have no particular opinion on Forte; he may be brilliant, he may be woeful, he may be anything between those two. I just find it odd that someone can state such strong opinions about him when he's played so little. So I wondered if he'd like to clarify his statement.

Is a man not allowed to question another's statement nowadays without being jumped on?

It makes more sense now as the keepers are now 1, 21 and 31. Gotta have a system

I've just bought the new shirt with 'Forecast' printed on the back, now they've gone and changed his number FFS!

Being anal to the extreme I'd have given Chaplow #8 as he's more of an attacking midfielder. Interesting that 19 is left out. Perhaps we've signed someone, but we're waiting for the opportune moment to announce it (Friday for a bigger walk up on Saturday maybe).

Wonder who it could be...
